I was wondering if any of you have run the 30 Cal .308 178 gr A-MAX pills (.495 BC) down your barrel and if so, how did they perform compared to the 168 gr SMK HPBT bullets? I'm shooting a 20" 1:10 barrel on a JP LRP-07.

I've got the opportunity to get a case of ammo loaded with these bullets though have not tested any in my gun yet.

Thanks in advance.

From what I have seen and read, 1:10 twist barrels seem to like the heavier bullets best on the LRP-07. But I can tell you that it also likes the FGMM 168gr. sierra match.

Correct me if im wrong but you can only single feed 178 amax pills in an ar10 due to mag length issues.

I run them in my mws with pmags all the time.
Don't shoot as well as the 168 Amax in that application though.

I shot 600 of them through my M700, and got great accuracy with them on top of RE17. I shot them at 1k twice, and they did ok. No problems with staying supersonic or anything like that. i shot therm back to back with the Berger 185 OTM tactical, and the Hornadys def blew in the wind a bit more. I'm not great LR shooter, so I can't say how good an LR bullet they are.

The beauty of the 168's is how easy it is to make them shoot. It's harder to make them shoot poorly, than it is to make them shoot well.

They work great in gas guns when mag fed, use the same data you would for a 175smk but maybe try different overall lengths. For me I found seating them a little deeper really tightened up my groups.

I shoot 178 Amax bullets all the time with my .308 AR based Semi Auto. When I ordered my barrel from Kreiger; I origionally asked for a 1:10 twist barrel at 22' long. I mentioned to them that I would shoot 175 SMK and 178 AMAX bullets. They told me to stick with 1:11 twist for that weight bullet. 1:10 twist would be better suited for heavier rounds like 190 SMK. Anyways, my 178 AMAX bullets overall length is set at 2.800 due to magazine limitations. The DPMS steel mags will allow more overall length than the plastic PMAGs. I cant honestly say Ive compared the 178 AMAX to a smaller 168 SMK however. But I will say the AMAX shoots 3/4" groups and better. Ive shot several 5 round groups at less than 1/2" on a good day for me. Ive also shot 1" groups on a bad day. I like 178 AMAXs

Been shooting the Southwest Ammunition 178 Amax load without any problems in my Sig 716P,CMMG 18 inch ,and my Armalite AR10 . They all eat it like candy . Very accurate up close and at 300 yards . Looks like Southwest has the load worked out pretty good . The wait time was longer then I hoped ,but this is life under Obama.
