Kicking Ass Somewhere
I see a lot of data on amax 123's and other 120's and 123's but very little on the 123 SMK's, I picked up a box of 500 123 smk's and am looking for a good load to get me in the zip code of a starting load. I have Varget, H4350, IMR 4350, and 4064 to choose from on powders, I also have Lapua, SSA and Rem brass. It seems the 140's like to sit off the lands between 10 and 25 thou, is this also the case for the 123's?

I usually start as close to the lands as possible and still feed reliably from the magazine with SMK's. I'll second the load areas boilerup posted, you'll find something useable right in there somewhere. I tried SMK 123's in my 260, but it seems to prefer Amax's. If speed is a concern, just under 45gr of H4350 gets me just under 2900fps from a 20" 1/8 tube and will turn in sub-MOA 10 shot groups on command @100.

I use 40 1/2gr of IMR4064 with 123 SMK. Loaded at 2.800" which is .012" off the lands in my rifle. Lapua brass. 2980fps with chrono. Sub 1/2moa. I never could get the H4350 to give me suitable velocitys.

44.2 gr h-4350 @ 3150 fps 26" tube
Right now .010 off. Will be doing a seating depth test soon to see if I can tighten it up. Around 1/2 moa right now.

I am loading 39.8 gr of varget in winchester brass, this load has been .5 or better on a good day

39.3gr +/- Varget (Newberry sez this is OCW)
Ha. That's funny, I just tried Varget in my .260 gas gun for the first time and it bugholed at 39.3gr with consistent POI from 39.0-39.9gr. What's the saying... even a blind hog finds an acorn now and then.

Yeah, that was my thought too; I've been running 120/123s over 39.3gr Varget in my 260s for a few years now and when I heard Newberry called that weight OCW I couldn't help but laugh.

It ain't the fastest, but it does shoot...

I use 44.6grs of H4350 with Rem brass and 123gr Scenars out of a 26" barrel for ~ 2990fps.

24" DPMS LR260
43gr of H414
123 smk
2800 FPS
