New GAP Extreme Hunter in 6.5 SAUM

To date I have tried these bullets:

1) 140gr Berger Hybrid - Pointed
2) 130gr Berger VLD - Pointed
3) 140gr Hornady AMAX

I saw no reason to divert from those three. I am waiting on some 140gr JLK's but there is a wait time involved with his stuff. But reports are that his stuff is incredible in the 6.5 cal range.
.5-1 mil flatter at 1k then a 140gr Berger Hybrid is the report when they are both pointed!

Will report back when I get more bullets lined up for trial runs. :D

What is the OAL for the 140 AMAX? I just seat some Hornady 140 HPBT and they are 2.826, seems short but thats .010 off the lands. Gonna go out and try tomorrow and see how it goes.

Isn't the new reamer a "no turn neck" style versus the original was "turn neck"?

It's like .298 vs .296

No the new one had a slightly shorter freebore but had the "turn" neck size since if headstamped brass is made in the future it will have the "turn" size neck.

That's close , new reamer is .032 shorter FB. Old was .120 new is .088

So if we loaded based on the original reamer, we need to stick with the original reamer (when it's new barrel time) to be good to go?
How much would this affect the OAL on the 140gr Berger Hybrids?

:D

New Reamer.
It's perfect for the Berger Hybrids now. , 2.920 to touch.

130 Berger VLD's will touch at 2.880

Are those 140 JLK bullets same? I would hate to have one reamed and all my loaded ammo not fit! But then we get to cuss Josh out for not knowing what to do. Win.

Lots of guys seem to get hung up on the Reamer it's not Magic. The body and neck size give you the alignment. The throat angle for the most is always 1 deg . The FB has to be set so that it functions with the bullets intended for the cartridge. In this case we want to shoot 140 hybrids, JLK's, 130 VLDs. Max Mag length is 2.950. The FB was initially set for the 130 and 140 Berger VLD at 2.900 but it was just a tad short IMO for the 140 hybrid. So when I made the change to .081 it allows for both to work well. I just got back from the Surefire PRS match and got the Win with the new chamber. Already proved the older version was a winner so nobody needs to stress on this. :)

So you are on the 3rd version of this reamer? You say the original had .120" and then .081" and now .088"? The dimensions Kiff had been shipping for the new reamer was .081" FB with a 1°-30 throat (I have one and prints for it marked 6.5 GAP 4s).

Not that it would make much difference between the .081" or .088" but differing numbers seem to get tossed around a bit and it leads to confusion.

FWIW my reamer with .081" FB and a 1°-30 throat with Berger 130 VLD's is 2.875" OAL touching to slightly into lands (leaves a small rectangular mark on bullet).

.081 is correct, I'm on the road in Montana. I had .088 in my head thanks for the correction.

I think the big concern isn't the reamer but the fact that some people have a lot of ammo made up for the longer FB so when having a new barrel spun up they would have to keep with the same reamer or push the bullets in another .032"

As far as my concern earlier about OAL I think I'm good considering how much longer the 130VLD is than the 140BTHP. I took it out yesterday just to test out brass prep and loads, only put 25 rds down range and it went well. Only tested out 3 loads and 1 bullet but its already putting them under 1/2" @ 100yds, going to take the once fired brass and try it again and see if the fire formed brass shoots better.

I have both reamers, Guys can spec which one they want come re barrel time.

If only I had the patience to wait 4 months or longer, I would. However, I have unsuccessfully been trying to scavenge a 6.5 SAUM off others. Bunch of Kool-Aid drinking son of a bitches. :D

As much time as you've been putting into scavenging one from one of us, you'd be halfway into your wait at GAP now! grin

just ordered my today B888chs, Drank the kool-aid!!!

Very true. But in this case I get more satisfaction by being a scavenger than by waiting for my Kool-Aid to be served 6 months later. Someone will eventually want to sell theirs before Christmas. :D

Read a lot of these threads but have a couple of questions. What does a die set cost and lead time? Also, I'm thinking of re-barreling my lightweight sheep rifle to the 6.5SAUM and setting up a switch barrel rig. What action wrench should I be looking at that doesn't require removing the scope? Stiller Predator action.

Just placed my order for an Xtreme Hunter. Thanks for this great thread guys.

Another Montana Muley bites the dust to a single 130 VLD from the 6.5 4S. 510 yards dropped in his tracks. Great Shot Josh!!

1k 130gr Bergers, check. 1k 140gr Bergers, check. 400pcs of formed 6.5 brass, check. 6.5 dies, check. I put in an order w/ Ken for 6.5 a couple months ago and I know I still have a while to wait, but dang I want to get my hands on this thing!

It will be interesting to hear and see how the brass availability issue plays out on this caliber meaning to go with a turn or no turn reamer before finding out brass availability for my build so I am in pause mode until the dust settles.

I believe George stated that if he can get commercial brass it will be for the turned neck version. So see you can go ahead and order one. Look how helpful I am in spending your money! :)

Trust me I'm not concerned about the cost of a reamer, and as I remember George stated the brass would be for the no turn .298 neck, but that's still unknown till next year at best I would say. I like the Kool-Aid just want to be sure I can get refills. I have other builds going now anyway so I still cling to...good things come to those who wait!!!

6.5 GAP 4S Mule Deer hunt 2013 is in the books. 8 shots fired. 8 Mule Deer Down! From 80 yards to 510 yards, 7 DRT , one made it 15-20 yards and collapsed. If anyone has any dought about this caliber on big mule deer and elk they are confused! Lol

Here is mine from today.

Anyone using the new Bushy LRH? Does the XRS compare for better or worse in low light?

Just to help clarify, George provided info on the reamer in post #306 of this thread:

http://www.snipershide.com/shooting...ap-extreme-hunter-6-5-saum-7.html#post2563006

The .296" neck is what GAP is currently chambering their Extreme Hunter in. It would not make much sense for GAP to change the commercially produced brass spec to .298". GAP did change the freebore spec on the reamer in early August per post #46 of the Care and Feeding thread:

http://www.snipershide.com/shooting...61-care-feeding-gap-6-5-saum.html#post2634229

It is VERY easy to get confused with all the info floating around this thread. I just ordered my reamer last week so I recently tracked ALL the pertinent info down and compiled a MS Word doc. No worries. :)

Nice mulies BTW guys, have fun!!

Pard I'm not confussed, I have read the whole thread as well and have the same info. The reason GAP is chambering with the .296" neck (PT&G print# 50645) is because you neck down 7/300 SAUM brass and you turn the necks to clean them up. I understand the FB issue as I did the same to my 260 reamer 4 yrs ago to run the 140JLK from my mag and had great sucess. My issue remains the same... Brass availability and what the neck thickness will be to decide which reamer to go with. When this is made public then I will move forward and as George has stated that will not happen until after SHOT. Like I stated from what I've read and discussed with George and Pat "I like the Kool-Aid" just want to be sure I can get refills!

George

Do you happen to have a link?

I'm in the middle of a 6.5 SAUM project for my Surgeon XL which is set up currently as a 30-375R, with altered mags that feed the -375R case perfectly. It might be more beneficial for me to change gears now. I was comparing the two cases yesterday, 300SAUM and 30-375R, the size difference is huge, over bore is a understatement. A light load would send 140's at 3250 fps easily! I'm getting 2925 fps as is with the 30-375 and 230's right now.
