Pardon the ignorance. I'm sure there's a simple answer.

I'm finding that the distances marked on the side focus / parallax adjustment of my S&B 5-25 aren't matching up with observation in the real world.

For example, if the target is at 100, in order for the target to be crisp and clear the side focus needs to be almost 200.

If the target is at 500, the side focus needs to be past 800.

My eyeball is about perfect, close to 20/20 courtesy of some LASIK a while back.

I did RTFM and I think I adjusted the eyepiece right. At least, the reticle is sharp with it set to 25x and looking at a white background.

Is there something else I should be looking at?

Those numbers are just a reference. It could be an ocular issue. To really know if your parallax is properly adjusted you need to worry less about "focus" and more about ensuring you've dialed out all parallax.

My S&B 5-25 is not perfect either. It is off by about 25-50 meters, depending on the range. The longer the range, the larger the difference. But really, I would never use it for ranging purposes. I only use the marks just to get me close, or dial it half the range and use the scope to read mirage.

Maybe Jerry with S&B can comment?

I have never owned a scope where the markings on the parallax knob match the distance the scope focusses at (for me).
This includes a handful of Bushnell Elite Tacticals, an S&B 5-25, a March 3-24, a Steiner 5-25, etc.
