I recently put together a 300 win mag out of my parts locker. All but the barrel is stuff I had. What came together is this. 700 Remington action that I had sent to IT&D in Ohio to have a Douglas target barrel installed. Lapped the lugs faced the barrel etc. I put it on a Choate (by John Plaster)free floated stock. Two aluminum bedding blocks. Put a Millet 4x16 Target scope and went to the range. First outing I found out the screws weren't tight and accuracy was a disaster. So I loaded up some more and tightened everything down and let em fly. Best group was around an inch @ 100yds Lots of two and three bullet groups that touched but not consistent. I'm experimenting by loading a group of 208 Horandy HPBT with 64 grains of 4350, Winchester large rifle magnum primers. I also have loaded and some 168 grain Serria BTHP Match with 71 grains of 4350. Some 208's with with 74 grains of H1000 then another group with 76 g. of H1000.
So my question is.......anyone have a cartridge load to recommend? Anyone have advice on the set up.(I'm kind of questioning the stock myself) I'm used to shooting half inch to 3/4inch groups @200yds with my stable of .308's (Remington 700 long range tactical/target, Springfield M1A and DPMS .308 LR).

Comments, criticism's, and wisdom are all welcome.

I'd double check the free float, make sure the barrel isn't touching. Then loosen the action screws, cut 4 pieces of paper and put them on each side of the action screws in between the blocks. Torque screws back down, I like to go half the torque first then full torque. See if you can pull the pieces of paper out from under the action. TM

check your seating depth, mine likes the 208 bthp about .030 off with 74gr of h1000 fed 215m primers running about 2850fps. when I first started loading I went off book dimensions, how ever the throat is rather deep in my girl.

300 wm is an awesome cartridge. However, it is quite a recoiler. You definitely must have a solid platform under the action for it to work right. I don't know what kind of support that stock is giving you with just aluminum blocks, as I have never used a stock with bed blocks. However, I have shot a stock r700 300 wm in a McM a4 stock that wasn't bedded (in Long Island, the fuckheads don't know what bedding is and tell you that it is not necessary). It shot 4" groups at 200 yds. I bedded it, and the groups tightened up to about 2" at 200. Ultimately, it was a very bad barrel that was the culprit. I redid the entire rifle with mark Gordon, and now it is my favorite rifle, having shot about a 4 inch group at 1000 yds.

My question to you is, how far are you planning to shoot this thing? In my opinion, bullets under 190 gr are a waste of time with the 300. I feel that the point of having a magnum, using all that powder is to drive heavy bullets at speeds to rival the 308 with lighter bullets. My personal favorite is the 210 SMK. I have tried about 100 of the 208 Amax, but wasn't all that impressed with them. 76 gr of H1000 is what works for me. The 210 smks aren't very cheap, but worth it if they work in your gun. Try some 190 smks or some 200 smks. If your barrel is good, you should definitely be tighter than 1 moa.

Give h4831 a try, I load the 208 a max in norma brass, federal gmm mag primer, 72.5 gr of h 4831 with a col of 3.60 It is .020 off the lands and shoots like a house on fire. It is also very consistent, single digit velocity spread. I am betting you will find luck with the h1000 though.
Best of luck
M.J.

Send me a PM with the following:

Barrel length, +/-16th inch, from the bolt face to the crown
Overflow water capacity from your fired brass
OAL you would like to work with
OAL where the bullets touch the lands

I will send you some starting data, it will get you VERY close right off the bat.
