I recently put together a 300 win mag out of my parts locker. All but the barrel is stuff I had. What came together is this. 700 Remington action that I had sent to IT&D in Ohio to have a Douglas target barrel installed. Lapped the lugs faced the barrel etc. I put it on a Choate (by John Plaster)free floated stock. Two aluminum bedding blocks. Put a Millet 4x16 Target scope and went to the range. First outing I found out the screws weren't tight and accuracy was a disaster. So I loaded up some more and tightened everything down and let em fly. Best group was around an inch @ 100yds Lots of two and three bullet groups that touched but not consistent. I'm experimenting by loading a group of 208 Horandy HPBT with 64 grains of 4350, Winchester large rifle magnum primers. I also have loaded and some 168 grain Serria BTHP Match with 71 grains of 4350. Some 208's with with 74 grains of H1000 then another group with 76 g. of H1000.
So my question is.......anyone have a cartridge load to recommend? Anyone have advice on the set up.(I'm kind of questioning the stock myself) I'm used to shooting half inch to 3/4inch groups @200yds with my stable of .308's (Remington 700 long range tactical/target, Springfield M1A and DPMS .308 LR).
Comments, criticism's, and wisdom are all welcome.
