Should I trade my Savage in on a Remington for the action?

I have a Savage 16 Stainless in 308 as my hunting gun. I am thinking about going to a hybrid hunting/tactical gun with a shorter (18-20") and heavier barrel and a different stock. However, I can't afford the custom work that would go into that right now. On the other hand I could probably trade that gun and some other stuff in on a lefty Rem. 700P LTR. There is nothing wrong with the Savage but I am tempted because:

1. The Remington form factor is closer to what I ultimately want.

2. The 700 platform has better aftermarket support (though my left handedness hampers things even with 700s)

3. I think there is better available gunsmithing support for the Remington near where I live.

4. The Remington seems to be a better action to build a custom gun on later.

On the other hand there are some good arguments against it:

1. The Savage has shown itself to be pretty accurate.

2. It is stainless steel, and while I don't do a ton of hard weather hunting it never hurts.

3. I would lose some money in the deal.

4. Remington seems to have an iffy QC rep nowadays.

So what do people think? I'm not trying to start a Ford v. Chevy fight, and if my assumptions above are incorrect I would hate to live in ignorance.

Thanks, and happy holidays!

Not sure there is much of a market for the stock accustock and barrel. Is there?

Not too much but a quick look on ebay completed listings shows accustocks ending over $100 with the bottom metal. Used barrel market is a crap shoot but you should be able to get a couple bucks. In the end if you really want the 700p then thats what you should do, otherwise you will just be throwing good money after bad.

New barrel and stock for the savage is more likely to get you further than a 700p. The barrel is the secret to the rig side of precision shooting, practice is the secret to the mental side.

Keep the savage as your hunting gun and save some scratch for a custom tactical rig. I made a mistake a couple of years ago and had a custom hybrid hunting/bench gun built. It's a tack driver but it's a heavy bitch, no fun to tote in the mountains. I am now spending another $4k building a light weight hunting rig from the same smith. Try explaining that to the wife!

I would go with the barrel and stock for the Savage. I have several LH Savages and they all shoot well. I have picked up a few new take off heavy barrels with no or less than 100 rounds through them and they work fine. With a wrench and a go gauge and you can change the barrel yourself. Remington's are pretty but are not always more accurate out of the box.

I had a Savage 10fp, mainly because it was easy to get. I always wanted a 700 though. No matter what I did too the Savage, I still wanted the 700. The Savage shot well, I still wanted the 700.

Sold the Savage, and got my 700 5R Milspec in .308. Shot it for the first time this past weekend. I couldn't be happier. If you want the 700, I say go for it.

I agree if you want the 700 get it. If you keep the savage no matter how good it shoots it will always be in your mind the 700 might be better for you. You have to believe in what ya shoot.

I have a bone stock savage 10, buds gun special with 24" fluted and threaded 5r. It shoots 155@2925 into little holes religiously the only thing i've done is add scope and skim bed. I always liked remmy's, so i bought a new 5r. It shot 1.25.1.5 moa. Tried bedding, an aics, and finally had it trued and rebarreled. Now it finally can shoot. Fell in love with an aac-sd, immediately dropped it into an aics, after a bunch of load work it shot 1 moa. Meanwhile the savage continued to shoot groups in the .4s. I got the point the aac-sd in the aics never left the safe as it was slower fps and less accurate. I ended up getting the action trued and doing a remage on it. It finally shoots better then my savage and since it's a remage it doesn't bother me to shoot it a bunch(243 1-8). Probably my favorite rifle next to a 10 tac in 6 br fast twist
