Wow... that's a difficult choice. :p

But what a fun problem to have.

Yeah - back in the day My best friend had a Mustang and I drove a Trans Am. I'm thinking it's one of those comparisons again. :)

You mention "rough service work" in your list of requirements. The Steiner is relatively new on the scene so I'm not sure that the evidence is yet there to make the call on Steiner's durability (or maybe it is, I don't have all the facts, just listing my opinion).

I will tell you that I got to shot with two USMC Scout Sniper Instructors at the Fall Alleganny Sniper Challenge and one of them was rocking the Premier 3-15x Tactical on his rig. Given that Marines are using the 3-15x Tactical as their Day Scope, I asked them how the Premiers were doing for them. They had very high praise and these guys each have multiple combat tours with the optic. They said "right there with the [Schmidt and] Bender" and "Love the reticle and glass" and "never had mechancial problem." That is pretty convincing evidence that the Preimer qualifies nicely on your "rough service work" requirement.

My vote goes Premier, but for those distances I wouldn't rule out a SB 3 -12 with a p4f recticle, shorter and lighter.

I love Premier, but when I had my 3-15 on my 20" medium weight barrel 260AR, I felt it really upset the weight/balance factor of the rifle. It went from a fairly handy (though not light) AR into a "heavy gun" kinda thing.

Switching to a NF 3-15 helped a lot.

If you're dead set on either a Premier or Steiner - I can't *not* recommend the Steiner, but I definitely *can* highly recommend the quality of the Premier.

If you're still open to other options though, I'd consider a smaller/lighter scope - maybe even one with a smaller objective, like the March 3-24x42.

Just some thoughts.

I don't think the Premier light tactical has the elevation adjustments for the .308 to make it to 800 plus it is hard to find now.

To me for gasser guns, it is either the Leupold 3-18x44 Mark 6 or March 3-24x44 as the only two choices in FFP. Everything else is way too long, heavy, and clunky.

I've looked through both and own the March and they are the way to go. Both are great scopes but if you are looking for illumination, then that leaves you with the March as the only logical choice. The illumination for the Leupold adds a crazy amount in cost.

There are also a few SB 3-20's on here close to that price range.

Id keep an eye out on eurooptics.com in there demo and used section and on the sample list for a used Schmidt in either 3-12 or 4-16, the 4-16 will weigh more though. If 800 is going to be your max there is no reason why a 12x will not work.

As far as the Leupold goes, I don't care much for the TMR recticle, If had to buy another premier I would also look for a used Tactical instead of the light.

Id start looking at the Kahles 3 -12 and 4-16 as well.

Sounds like you need to go to Shot to fondle all the high end glass and make your choice there. Good excuse to go right!?

I don't think the Premier light tactical has the elevation adjustments for the .308 to make it to 800 plus it is hard to find now.

The Premier LT has 12 Mils in two turns (6 Mils per turn). A 175gr SMK at 2600fps MV, in 1000 ft D.A., needs approximate 11.4mils to get to 1000. To get to 800 w/ the 175gr SMK with 12 mils, you would need to be down in the insanely slow 2100fps range.

So the LT's 12 mils will get a 308 comfortably out to 1000.

LT is a great piece of kit. I love mine. Not as bullet proof as the bigger Tactical, but very tough nonetheless and covered by lifetime warranty.

Thanks for all the great replies . So I had a chance to handle and shoot the big Premier PH on a similar rifle to mine and its bad ass. Everything feels just right --- but not for MY .308 build. Too heavy for my 10lb rig. Not heavy in terms for weight - but how it throws the balance point off, and the top heavy feeling is pretty noticable as well. If this were a bolt gun I'd be giving it the thumbs up, but my rig is built to move and shoot like a DMR setup. Then I mounted the Leupold Mk6 -- holy crap. Its so compact that most weight is aft of the magwell. I don't even notice it compared to the Premier. The deciding factor is the price - the Mk6 is A LOT less money -- like under 2K. But the glass is better than any NF I've ever seen. And although the build isn't as "tank like" compared to the Premier, you get great glass, and performance without the weight penalty. Gonna wait to see what SHOT brings but the Leupy is now on the short list.

edit for spelling.

I will say this - for a SPR style rig in 5.56 I can't think of a better choice than the Mk6. I put it on my Noveske 3 Gun stick and it was so at home I might buy two.

Big thanks to my Bro Steve who made this happen. Not many guys would strip the glass from a well zero'ed weapon on a rainy day .
