Cincinnati, Oh
So I took my 700 hunting a few weeks ago when it was raining. Once I got home I stripped the gun down completely and dried every inch of the gun I could. Well it seems that I missed some and the bolt was rusted shut. After countless hours of scrubbing with 000 steel wool and gun oil I think I have removed all the rust I can. However after a day I looked over the gun and noticed slight discoloration (redish hue) on the bolt body. It almost appears to be stained. Should I be worried? Or should I just go ahead and strip the parkerized finish and duracoat? Any and all advice is welcome I've never seen this with any of my firearms.

use grease instead of oil and just shoot it

something in stainless for hunting is much less PITA

Seems you didn't get all the moisture out, or you have a damp area in your home. It is not a bad idea to pray water soaked firearms with a little WD40 before you clean them, just make sure you then clean the WD40 off and then lube with proper lube. I use Lubriplate 130A and CLP since I have a lot of the stuff.

I agree on the wd-40 its great for displacing water,,,i use a grease in a syringe called shooters choice I think... its red and seems to work better than just oil fwiw

Is this a common problem with Remington 700s?

I'm considering a AAC-SD and dont want to always have to worry about rust after it rains.

ANY firearm with steel will rust is not cared for.

Good lube coating to start will prevent water in direct contact with the metal.

Then dry well after rain exposure. Use something that displaces water (like WD-40), then relube.

I understand the prevention aspect with the wd40. But I still haven't seen an answer about the discoloration on the bolt body. Should I duracoat or just contain to keep it well lubed?

Musky is right. The flitz is good stuff. Sounds like a surface stain. Take it down to the good metal and she'll probly be pretty again and stay that way. I would dura coat if I were you. It's an easy enough job. And you will feel better about the situation after you're done.

Try Frog Lube as a protection grease; best to heat the metal first with a hair-dryer and then rub it with your fingers. If the color is ok, you can simply cold-blue it in a few minutes as an easy fix.
