When it happens we usually get a request from our resident favorite ICE agent looking for the buyer and seller's IP address.
Sucks to buy it only to have it "recovered" at a loss to you.

I have assisted Army CID with the recovery of stolen ACOG's from a duche that got a BCD.

When I was in the Military it was not called stealing, it was called appropriating. There was not a single soul that did not have something they appropriated. And that included the IG AND CID.
I went into a bank in Germany once to exchange some money and on the counter there was a black pen attached to a bead chain that said "Property of US Government".
Must have been part of a foreign assistance program....

Love this. Besides its not stealing if we pay for it at the beginning of every year. Medicaid and other gov programs that rhyme with smell fair is stealing....
Would this mean that anything marked property of US ( Army,Navy, etc) cannot be sold to the public even if it is long out of use?

When I hired out with the Anchorage Police Dept. I had to take a polygraph. One of the questions was, "Have you ever stole from an employer" I answered yes. When I got out of the Army at Ft Devens Ma, I had a '61 Chev with a busted gas gage so I took a 5 gal gas can off a Jeep. He asked if I took anything else, "yup, it was full of gas".
We all have done it, that don't make it right. Somehow I think its worse when you sell it. But that's just my opinion, stealing for my own use is stealing just the same.

Equipment is sold to civilians all the time. DRMO. Can't count the stuff that is not fixed that goes to DRMO and is then off to a public auction. I have actually seen a Detroit diesel that needed overhaul and it was going to run to much. Went to DRMO and Saw it for sale on ebay about 6 months later. Cost on the motor was $110,854 and it was being sold for $15,000. I know it was the same motor because I called and asked the serial number (we keep all the records) and it was. So basically you never can tell even if it is a reputable place or some place shady.

That I don't know, we just had a safety briefing on it. It was a contractor that "took one for repair" if you know what I mean.
Speaking of this...With all the stolen night vision and lasers for sale out there, I wonder why you almost never see PVS-10's?
There is only one listed on ebay, and with it's paint job (looks about like mine did...crappy) I would bet some dough it's hot.
