I'm converting my Savage 300WSM to 6.5x47 and I need to change the firing pin and bolt cap. I have the part numbers but when I go to order them on the Savage website it says that the parts are restriced to gunsmiths. Is there any way around this? I don't want to go to a smith and ask him to order parts for me because I'm a DIY guy.

Check Numrich...they generally have a metric @#$%-ton of Savage parts of all varieties, including firing pin assemblies, etc. and other "restricted" items you cannot get direct from Savage.

Interesting. I'm doing a 6.5 SAUM build on a Savage 110 SA small shank receiver with a standard .308Win bolt head. I was told by one person that I would need to replace the firing pin assembly and baffle in conjunction with going to the WSM bolt head, as those parts were different in the WSM models bolt. Looking for clarification/confirmation I later called PTG and spoke with Dave Kiff about this, as I'm using their magnum bolt face when the next batch ships. Dave wasn't aware of any different baffle sizes and only the different SA and LA firing pins. I haven't 100% resolved this quandary as I don't have the WSM bolt head in had to compare to the .308Win bolt head. Helidriver if you'd be gracious enough to snap a pic and do a quick thickness measurement of the bolt head I'd appreciate it. :) I should probably give SSS a call in the near future as well.

308 is the shorter one.

Very interesting.....thanks again for the detailed info! Good luck on your build. I think you will be VERY please with the 6.5x47 caliber. Whose barrel are you going with out of curiosity? I have a 6.5 Creedmoor and .260 Rem which feels almost like "cheating" after shooting .308Win for a few years. With the 6.5 SAUM it will definitely be "cheating" on most targets within 1k. :)

Going to use a Shilen. I don't know much about custom barrels but I hear they are good.

My .260Rem barrel is a 28" prefit Shilen Select Match. It's an absolute hammer and bug holer! I did zero break in and have only lightly cleaned it once in almost 500 rounds. It just flat out shoots. Hope your barrel is as good!

Just to update this thread. I received the SA Magnum bolt head from PTG today. It is the same lug thickness as a .308 bolt head (0.440"). So for anybody else building a 6.5SAUM on a normal (non-WSM) SA Savage action with the PTG bolt head you will NOT need to change the firing pin assembly to the WSM version.
