Gunsmithing 300wm or 300wsm

Win Mag holds more powder, therefore it performs better with heavy pills. On the other hand, WSM brass is readily available.

Wsm theoretically burns powder more efficiently with more powder close to the primer cause of the short stubby case therefore is potentially more accurate. The difference in velocity is moot. One can add an extra inch on the barrel and velocity is somewhat mitigated. Wsm is easier on brass when reloading cause of the belt the win mag has. Short action is lighter than long action. Less $ per bang handloading. Some feel the wsm is a gimmicky cartridge.

Win mag can shoot the heavier pills better as was mentioned cause of more powder. Tried and true long history behind it compared to wsm. Win mag factory ammo maybe easier to find. Army potentially switching over to win mag from their .308 long actions.

Either way they are roughly the same with a slight nod ballistically to the win mag.

Really comes down to what you want to do with it. If your elk hunting and want to shoot a 200+g bullet you pretty much have to go win mag depending on powder type because if your loading a long pill you will be crunching powder in a WSM. If your precision shooting then I would go with the WSM for the reason as JBNj stated above, stick with 168g pills the WSM loves them.

SA vs LA. Is what it comes down to. A 175 lrx will handle elk easily. You dont need 200 gr bullets. Wsm seems to shoot 180 gr bullets best. Win mag stuff seems more plentiful to find but ballistic wise there's not enough to sweat it.

My wsm hammers with 210vlds over RL22. I like that the wsm uses less powder. I had a wsm action to start with though so that made my decision easier.

my 300wsm with h4350 and 208 a-max is 27.2 minutes at 1k. Using those numbers puts the muzzle velocity at about 2780 I believe (26" barrel da @1800 last time I was out before the ice age started!

I had a wsm action on hand so that made the decision easier for me. I'm happy with it. Barrel life might be better (same dia hole, less powder - but who knows who to believe). I like that the bolt throw is the same as my 308. A win mag is way easier to get brass and factory ammo for though.

The only advantage is that of the shorter powder column will lower the spread of your shot-shot velocity. This is the same concept as the 30-06 vs 308. All factors being equal the 30-06 will have a spread of 50-70 fps where the shorter 308 will spread 30-50 fps.

That's with a full benchrest prep routine of sorting, neckturning and culling. Powder charges held to .1 grain difference.

The velocity of the round isn't as important as the spread, particularily past 600.

There's also the advantage of new powders like rl-33, vv570, and Norma 217 offer serious speed boosts for the heavier pills in a 300 winnie
