Hey guys been shooting my 338 lapua for a couple seasons now. Im getting ready to upgrade optics on it. I had a viper pst 6-24 ffp on it. While I love the scope im wanting some better glass for it.

Ive shot it out to 1200yds so far but we just found a spot to shoot 1 mile plus. Im wondering what peoples thoughts are on glass for this.

Would you rather have better glass and lower magnification or higher mag and sacrifice on glass quality slightly?

Any opinions would be great. Also what is your ideal scope for this type of shooting? My budget unfortunately is around $1500ish.

At really long distances you need clean glass, it gets more important the further out. The EBRs on the PST is a nice reticle but the glass is not there, not even close.

For me, in this order. Especially if your gonna take the 338 way out there. 1 and 2 are somewhat interchangeable. Sell a kidney as they are worth it.

1. Premier 25x GEN2 XR

2. SnB 5-25 P4F

3. Steiner 25x MSR

OK, getting real tho your budget is not great. So I would go for a SWFA SS HD 20x or a used Vortex Razor HD. Both have great glass, track really well, and have a lot of adjustment range in the turret. I hear that the Mark 6 has great glass and there are a few on this site in that price range. However I hear not everyone likes their turrets.

Sako man. Thanks for the reply. I would love to be up in the $2500 price range. Maybe I should just keep saving. The razor and swfa are on my short list along with the mark 6. Ideally I would like to be in that 25x range but money is my limitation. As far as magnification goes do you think 18x-20x would be sufficient. Our new range is over a mile, we havent ranged it out and set up completely yet but we are pretty sure we will be able to get 2000yds out of it if not more depending on where we set up. I dont want to spend a ton then decide I want more.

I did read about a guy shooting 3000yds with a razor 5-20 on a 375 cheytac. That makes me think I would be fine with a max of 20x but cant shake the feeling that I would want more.

Again thanks for your reply. Oh and I agree 100% with what you said about the pst. Great scopes but they do have their limitations.

Im really looking for an ffp. We set out targets of known size at unknown distances and range with our reticles then shoot and obviously try for first round hits. I love ffp for this.

I really wish nf made a ffp 5.5-22 or something other than the 3-15 and the beast which do they even make those? Lol. Maybe an in between option?

I owned a mark 4 a couple years ago. Bought it brand new for $1300. I was not impressed the least bit with it. The image wasnt fully in focus with the parralax dialed out and to me the glass was worse than my pst. Maybe the glass is better in the ert or maybe I got a bad one but I was disappointed that's for sure.

Can somebody clear this up for me? Does leupold actually use the multicoat 4 lens coatings on their mark 4 line. The same coating the vx2 gets and the xtended twilight or whatever its called coating on the vx3 line? If so why would this be?

Just to get glass on par with the rest of the low to mid $1000 range you have to step up to the mark 6. Doesnt make sense to me. Not trying to bash leupold and could very well be wrong about the coatings but ive read this numerous places.

Vortex Razor HD has great glass and EBR-2B reticle with mil/mil reticle and turrets is the " cats meow".

Never had a chance to see an swfa in person. Wish they had some different reticles

Some time ago Leupold was having issues with their quality but for the past few years I have been really happy with their quality. The Mark 4 M5 have worked great for me. I do not feel their glass blows Vortex PST's way but I do feel it is better.
