Hi,

I have a 26" heavy contour krieger 6.5 barrel that I would like cut to 22" and turned down to a Sendero profile with flutes. I've gone on GAP and Kriegers websites and do not see this as a service. Does anyone out there know who can do this?

Thanks

Yes, GAP wont do it for you but you can contact kreiger if that's whose bbl it is, they have more of the proper tooling/setup for that job. GAP can cut it down for you though. Some people are weary of recountouring/fluting a bbl after its all been done. Find out and let us know. LOL

Good luck

I wrote Shilen about me doing it with one of their barrels I have, from #7 taper down to #3 taper.
They said go ahead if nothing else has been done to the barrel yet. They said to do it between centers.

Kreiger will do this as a service as I have had several done. But, only as long as the barrel is a blank and you don't go down more than 3 contours. Usually takes about 3 weeks.

Kampfeld is moving soon so I don't know how much work he's taking on until after the move. I think he's moving to Idaho. Randy Gregory at accuracy unlimited recontoured a barrel for me a couple of years ago. There are quite a few gunsmiths that can recontour one actually, you just have to ask around. Krieger won't recontour it if it's threaded and chambered like someone mentioned above.

FWIW, my Bartlein was fluted by Kampfeld after it had been chambered and threaded. After fluting it was off to melonite. Its the fastest most accurate barrel I've had to date.

I just had work done by Karl at Kampfeld and he's hoping to be moved by the summer time out to Idaho. I'm local, so I actually went in person to drop my stuff off to him.

On a side note, excellent guy to do business with. Called me a couple days after I had picked up my stuff to make sure I was still happy with his work. He really cares about his customers.

For those who do this, is it better to take a number of light cuts to minimize the tool pressure, or to take a couple heavier cuts to minimize the number of cuts? Which would cause the least distortion?

You can't take very big cuts, the rigidity isn't there and the barrel will chatter like mad. It will take some futzing to get the feeds and speeds to work and you can't get greedy. You can set up a rest to help.....but without a high speed outfit. ....it's slow. Finishing with paper is messy and abrasive.....keep it off the ways.

Good luck but I think this is one where it's best left as is or to be replaced rather than recontoured

I went thru this not long ago. I have an MTU contour Brux on a rifle and the best answer I was given was directly from Brux is they would turn it down and guarantee it as it was their barrel. Besides that, if I had anyone else do it they wouldn't guarantee it. The other option which is just as good as getting it turned down (for me) was as mentioned above, send it to Ken Kampfeld, cut it down to 22", and spiral flute it chewing off a fair amount of weight. Fluting is quite reasonable price wise. So far though my barrel is still on the rifle and not fluted but if I have some time it'll get done.

Long story short, the manufacturer of the barrel typically will turn it down. But in the end it is still a gamble as some barrels go out shooting well but come back and not shoot worth a damn. What's it worth to you?

Thanks. I d assumed a follower rest would be needed if taking a heavy cut.
