I've run out of Retumbo and have the following powders ... R22, r25, IMR 7828 ssc and reg. h1000, h4350, h4831ssc, us869, mag pro , ramshot magnum. What would you fellows recommend on the 230 and also the 215 Berger

I cannot say to what powder would be a good choice,but Bryan Litz has a great read on the bullet ( 230 hybrid ) A good friend of mine just got through reading it and was telling me about it.Bryan had the 230gn bullet out doing a 338 Lapua with a 250gn bullet.The specs he talked about would make one think,why do I even own a 338 now.I cannot come up with numbers,but will say its something my friend is wanting to try himself,just need to pick Bryans brain for the powder of choice.I want to say the fps for the bullet was around 2800-3000.I ran some numbers myself on QL and R22 7828 H1000 even Ratumbo would give out 2800fps,but getting 3000 was going to be a cloase call.the bullet would need to be in the lands at 3.700 or longer.( with a full case of either of the powders I posted.So I think who ever wants to run this bullet in a 300wm will soon find out its a great combo,thats if they can match the numbers Brayn came up with.

I throated this rifle for the 230's specifically. 3.719" coal with 74.5 Retumbo I'm getting just over 3000 fps out of a 30" broughton 5c
thats good,Because now that you said something about your barrel length,Bryan was useing a 26" barrel.This is why it was hard for my friend to work up a load on QL with his barrel,thats 26" all so.You should be OK for you are getting 3000fps from your barrel.If I had the book I would say more but cannot,but I will say this,Bryan had the 230gn hybrid out doing a 338 lapua in may ways.The fps was greater and the drops for that 230gn bullet was less with a alot of energy to boot.He alone might have found a reason to not own a 338 of any choice,if one will use his bullet.

I just picked up 400 of the berger tac hybrid 230 grain.. I was wondering the same thing. I am waiting on my rifle to come back from the gunsmith.. The only powder I could find was h1000. So I am going to have to make it work untill store shelves get restocked (if that ever happens) -
H1000 and H4831SC are both good temperature stable choices for the 230's in 300 WM.
You'll get about +100 fps with MAGPRO, but that's a double base and hence more temperature dependent powder.
With MAGPRO you can push the 230's 2800 fps+ out of a 24" barrel. That's loaded to 3.600" COAL, which is max mag length for the XM2010 magazine.
The COAL is a very important variable when loading this bullet in 300 WM; you want to load them as long as your throat and mag will allow to get the long bullet out of the case as much as possible.
Another tip; use standard large rifle primers for this, not magnum primers. I've consistently seen larger groups and higher MV SD's with mag primers.
The 230 Tac Hybrid is the one with the shorter nose and lower BC, intended to be more accommodating for mag feeding. We've seen equal precision from the full-blown Target Hybrid (un-constrained nose length, higher BC) at 3.600" COAL. So many people, including myself, are questioning the fate of the 230 Tac Hybrid if the higher BC 230 is just as good in the length constrained application.

Be careful about the conclusions of the 300 WM/338 LM comparison. It shows that the 300 WM with the modern, optimized 230 grain bullet can outperform .338 with 250 and 300 grain legacy bullets. However, if you look at the 338 LM also with modern, optimized 250 and 300 grain Hybrid bullets, then the 338 is still on top.
It is an eye opener though, comparing the 300 WM with it's legacy bullets vs the new 230's. Lots of performance there.

Thank you Brian. I throated this rifle specifically for your 230's. I have shot both the otm and the target hybrid and found the otm much more forgiving than the target hybrid. But I want the extra bc. I was running Retumbo and it shot great but as stated I'm out. I have tons of h4831sc so I will give it a try. H1000 is on the table too but none of my .300's have ever liked it compared to r22 or retumbo for the heavys but r22 is too temp sensitive. Speed really doesn't matter that much as I seriously doubt i will shoot it any farther than 1700 yards. But thank you for your suggestions and i will most certainly give the br2 or the fgm210m a try.
I've only used CCI BR2 vs. Fed 215M, but I suspect any standard large rifle primer would work better than any mag primer.
