Stoked about a new project, so thought it might be nice to share here...

A year or so ago I sold my Surgeons and went looking for something else. You know how that goes. I still had my KMW Sentinel and a 6.5mm barrel on the shelf after selling the action. Time to put those to good use again.

Just a few months back I stumbled upon a rarity in the form of a BAT 3-Lug repeater action in 1.47" octagon and integrated picatinny. I first thought I misread and it just had an ejector, but it turned out it was an actual repeater. Daryle Thom told me they made a dozen or so a while back and it's a little different from the normal 3-Lugs as the lugs are rotated 60° and flat instead of conical, so as to be able to pull rounds from the magazine. The 3LL is a "long action" but has the pillar spacing of a short action, so it will fit the well known bottom metals, cq AICS mags. For the rest there is a narrow port on the left so you can see if there is a round going into the action (and not do the feely thing I see LowLight doing all the time ;) ). The original bolt is a 308 face, but BAT will be making a matching WSM bolt for me. More choices later on.

The action will be headed my way shortly, very anxious to get hold of it. I think it belonged to a Hide member before the previous owner bought it, so it's a hand-me-down, pretty much like all the other bits going into this rifle.

Build sheet so far:
- BAT 3LL 1.47" Octagon repeater
- CG Xtreme #22 trigger
- Bartlein 6.5x47 24" 1:8.5
- KMW Sentinel stock
- AseUtra S7 can
- Harris/Spuhr/Premier

I'll share more when the build progresses.

Stock update: I mailed with Kyle from XLR industries yesterday if it would be at all possible to make a carbon HD for this action and to my surprise the answer was "yes". So the 3LL is headed over yonder to measure up. Thanks a million Kyle!!!

Perhaps just leave the KMW unmangled for a future short-action project.

Dual purpose:

95% of the time the rifle will be used for 100-500y shooting, hence my choice for the 6.5x47 (which I have already shot on two other rifles and am tooled up for). A couple of times each year I go to shoot ELR (1500-2400y) with my 375 SnipeTac and would like a companion rifle for some intermediate range plinking. Instead of building a third rifle, I am opting for a switch barrel in 7mm SAUM/WSM. As mentioned, BAT will be making a spare bolt for this repeater with a WSM face and I have the barrels/bullets laying around already.

Setup 100-600y:
- 6.5x47
- 24" 1:8.5 Krieger
- 139gr Scenars
- Alpha type 2 mags

Setup 600-1200y:
- 7mm SAUM
- 28" 1:9 Bartlein
- 175XLD and 180 VLD left-overs (have almost 2K, so they'll outlast this barrel)
- Alpha type 4 mags (10rd WSM)

Still decinding wether to go with all-black or some sort of FDE scheme with the carbon forend staying as it is.

That sounds like one bad.a project that if only a broke dick getting out of the navy headed back to college life could afford!

Can't wait to see how this turns out! Personally I would prefer to see it in the KMW. Love those things (although Kyles XLR is pretty sick too).

Why the XLR over the KMW?

@J: Everything's for sale at the right price ;)
nightforce: Ofcourse it will be a folder.

Why not the KMW... The sentinel is inlet for the round Surgeon 591 and the action I am using is octagonal action with a long-action length body, but short action mag system. The entire stock will have to be milled out extensivly I think. I would rather save it for perhaps a future project or just sell it as-is later on. I just really like Kyle's carbon version with the milled out chassis and carbon tubes. I like both really much, but only need one rifle :) Descisions, descisions.

Update:
The 6.5x47 will be replaced by a 6x47. Sold all my 6.5mm gear (bullets, dies etc) lately and decided to go with the 6x47. I've been testing it on my short-range F-Class rifle and am really enjoying this cartridge; very good accuracy, great ballistics and almost no recoil. I'm shooting the 115DTAC (3125fps) and 105 Hybrids (3200fps) with good results (under 0.3moa consistently). I get about 2" less drift at 600y compared the the 6.5x47AI, which is pretty much a complete ring/point. As I already have the dies etc it poses no extra investment besides the barrel itself. So there are now two Bartlein 7.5 twists ready just waiting to be chambered :)

Still deciding if I won't just stick my Leupy 16x Mk4 on here for a while. Very sleek and light. Time will tell.

Action: check
Trigger: check
Barrels: check
Rings: check
Scope: still deciding
Stock: almost done

Smithing: to do
Ionbond: to do

The XLR route is out; too busy for custom work at the moment. Now looking to see if the new AICS AX can be milled to take the extended octagon action. If so then that will be the route I take, otherwise I will most likely opt for a different action.

As with many things... plans change...

I fell in love with the new 2014 model AICS AX. From the topics I found on the existing AICS AX I found some pics with the Stiller Spectre action on it and was hooked. The BAT would require extensive milling in any of the modular chassis, yet the Spectre is a drop in fit on the AICS chassis. So after some sleepless nights I decided to go for it and sell the KMW and BAT 3LL.

Basically I should have never sold my Surgeon/AX, whahaha... hind sight is always 20/20.

Trent is the lucky new owner of the KMW, although it did not arrive untouched by customs. I hope he will make an awesome rifle on that stock, still some regrets in selling it, but something's gotta finance the new rifle ;)

I should now have a Stiller Spectre on order through my favorite gun smith, Dave Bruno in PA. The AICS will arrive here from the UK along with some accessories. Both will take a few months though, so patience is a virtue (which I don't have, but have to live with anyway).

Stiller delivered the Spectre action last month and I just got word the new 2014 AICS AX stock is on it's way to me. Barrels were already at my smith's, so we're good to go. Time to get accessorized and start getting ammo components.

Yeah, action and stock took some time. Luckily we have more shooting irons, but getting anxious to get this rifle finished.

Where did you order your 2014 AICS AX Chassis from?
