Just picked up a Remington 700 5R with the 20" bbl. That alone pretty much broke the bank. In any of your opinions, would a Nikon Monarch 3 6-24x50 be good for about 800-1000? I've heard people say bad things about Nikons, but I've never had any problems. I'm TRYING to keep the price around $500 until I can get some money built up. I really want to shoot as soon as possible. This will only be a paper puncher currently so it will only be off a bench or bag.

Check out the SWFA Super Sniper. Fixed power and at I think $299. it is a whole lot of scope. Get the Mil reticle and have some fun.

I second that.
A scope capable of 1000 yard shots is hard to come by under $700.

The SWFA SS line also offers some varable power scopes if you could flex a little on your budget.

I had two of the SS 16x42s for several years on a couple of the prone rifles I shot in NRA LR HP matches. Shot several cleans with them at 600, including a couple of 200-14x scores, and never had a problem with either of them at 1000yds, either. One had pretty stiff knobs, while the other was just about right; tracking seemed good also. Not bad glass, either.

I've got a Monarch 6-24x50 on a pretty little M700 CDL that I built as a 20 VarTarg, and it's OK, but does get a little dark when it's set on 24x. I think you'd be better off going with a 16x SS now, and saving up for a higher grade variable later. I'd bet you'll like the SS 16x42 enough to keep it around for your next build.

I wouldn't advise that Monarch for what you are wanting to do. It is a 1" tube and fairly limited in adjustment range (around 30moa). High magnification scopes under $700ish are generally not all that helpful, as resolution is what is needed, not just brute magnification.

In your price range, about the only 'higher' mag scope to suggest would be the Vortex Viper PA 6.5-20x50. It has surprisingly good glass and resolution in its price point, and is 30mm tube with decent amount of travel. Turrets are nice and have rotation count marks. Mil-dot, plex, bdc, and target reticles available. It is a great paper punching scope and has the best warranty in the business. You'll read very few complaints about that model.

For a 'tactical' scope as opposed to a target scope, as others have mentioned, SWFA 12x would be my choice under $500. Nice rifle, btw.

+1 on the SWFA super sniper. Had one on my Creedmoor took it out to 850 regularly. Tracks very well and a nice mil reticle for holdovers. You won't find a better scope for less than double the price.

+1 on the SWFA super sniper. The 16x42 is an excellent piece of glass to shoot the grand. The 10x is an awesome all around scope and they are well worth the $299 paid for them. As mentioned above, get the Mil reticle and have at it.
