Rifle Scopes Review of Desert Tech's AMR reticle in Kahles K624i

Hey guys, I have been fortunate enough to pick up some support from Desert Tech (formerly Desert Tactical Arms) in my competitive shooting. Along with a new A1 rifle chassis came a Kahles K624i optic with Desert Tech's own patented reticle known as the Advanced Milling Reticle or AMR. From the time of its release, lots of reviews and information has come out on the excellent Kahles K624i rifle scope. Having said that, I am going to touch very little on the scope itself and focus on the reticle that DT has developed for the K624i.

The AMR reticle was developed by Nick Young and Russ Wallis of Desert Tech. It's main quality for me is that it has .2 mil sub tensions on both the horizontal and vertical cross hairs instead of .5 mil like most other milliradian based reticles. The center of the cross hair is a modified floating center dot. Instead of a true floating dot, it has 4 hashes that measure .06 mil across. Below the horizontal, the reticle begins to expand by 1 mil both horizontally and vertically and continues all the way to the bottom, which at 6 times magnification is just over 33 milliradians.

This is a schematic of the very center of the reticle.

This picture shows the entire reticle as seen at 24 times magnification. Notice that I am holding over 6 mils (should be 5.7, but I bumped the scope) on a 12" circle at 845 yards.

This picture is the top view if I had dialed in the hold over.

When I shoot comps, if at all possible, I prefer to dial in the elevation and then hold off for the windage. Before I had this scope, I always felt like I was guessing with .5 mil sub tensions. With this reticle having .2, I feel like I am able to hold the same wind much more precisely on every shot. The .2 mil horizontal is my favorite thing about this reticle, and in my opinion, reason enough to make this purchase.

Like I said, if I have the opportunity I will always dial elevation. However, the .2 vertical is very useful to me in competition when you have targets at multiple distances and not a lot of time. I know some people will hold elevation for every shot, this is certainly not for me. I did want to try that out with this reticle for training purposes and just to say that I did it. So, this past weekend, I did just that at our local monthly shoot. I never moved the turret off 0 and shot the entire comp that way. It did work very well, but probably cost me a little placing wise.

I have shown this reticle to lots of tactical comp shooters, and most are pretty impressed by it. I do hear some guys comment on the "Christmas Tree" below and how they are afraid it will hinder their ability to spot misses. The Christmas Tree doesn't start up until one mil below the horizontal. I know that I for one have missed plenty of shots, but usually by less than half a mil and rarely by an entire mil. On that note, I have taken to using the Christmas tree to measure my misses. The dot grid works very well to quickly and accurately measure my miss to the center of the intended target. I will simply spot my miss and then move the reticle to the Christmas tree for a quick and accurate measurement.

Of course, the main reason for this Christmas tree is for extreme long range shooting. My Kahles will adjust 21.2 mils from it's 100 yard zero while sitting in a 30 MOA mount. This will get my 338 Lapua Magnum to about 2100 yards. Anything further that that, you just use the reticle to holdover both wind and elevation.

When ever I read an article, I am always interested in the point of view of the author because I know this will translate directly to my interest in the product. After all, I know my shooting has very little in common with bench rest shooting and I am uninterested in a bench rest shooter's view on equipment. So, a little bit about my shooting if you will. I grew up hunting large game and gradually moved towards faster pace shooting in coyote calling competition. This evolved into long range shooting, and quickly into extreme long range shooting out to about 2150 yards. Then through a friend, I was introduced to tactical long range competition where I became hooked. I have been shooting tactical for about 2.5 years now. In addition to my main focus of tactical, I also shoot 3 gun.

Thanks for reading this review of what I believe comes close to being the perfect tactical scope reticle.

If you have not used a Christmas tree reticle give this one a try. It is as useful as a HORUS but not as cluttered. I am used to using a Christmas tree reticle with .5 mil hashes and feel like I could get behind the AMR and get used to it right away.

Looks pretty good. I wish my pockets were deep enough to try one but can you post a black and white image of the complete reticle? (If Khales has one available)

This I think is a bit more clear on what the center looks like.

Hmm.. Desert tech is a whole 2 hours south of me. Wonder if the wife will notice me being gone for 4 hours picking one of these up.

I have mine mounted on my SRS, just trying to get some above zero temps up here to match up with my days off so I can test this thing out. It looks great though.

That is a nice reticle!

Ty, how much is the street price going for on this scope and reticle?

Thanks

$3084

One of the points Ty made about spotting I felt was a good one. Having the fine Christmas tree like on the AMR doesn't appear to be too intrusive but is a nice aid in calling out accurate corrections.

I also like how they did the numbers.

Thanks. The price just makes me feel broker than usual but I'm not the intended target for this one, looks good though. I really like the reticle in the G2DMR so I can see the potential in this one. I like the idea of the center illumination also, there have been a few times I would have used it on the lowest setting at first and last light this season.

Wow, great reticle design! Is it only available in the 624?

I almost bought one from them a few weeks back, but with them so scarce, my inability to look through one before I bought, and their 15% restocking fee, I just couldn't do it. Went with a MSR version instead.

This was my exact thoughts as well. I really wanted the reticle, but without having one to actually look thru, never having used a Khales, and the price being the same as S&B.....I just went with what I was more comfortable with.

I hear you!! I was about to get the MSR until I saw this review and I'm willing to trust Nick on this one as it looks pretty amazing! Can't wait for my tax refund to come through ahah!!

So how is warranty handled with this scope? Does DTA handle it?
DT will handle warranty on any product they sell. In addition, Ken Pratt of Kahles (the US distributor) is absolutely second to none in customer service.

Got to thinking about what you said about top end magnification. Today at the range I plan to use my S&B 5-20X at. 10-12 at 500 yards. Should be less movement and, hopefully, more accurate! Thanks

Does anyone know how much elevation travel is available on this scope?

I tried what you suggested at the range today and had my most accurate and relaxed shooting my DTA 22" 308 barrel with 1:11.5 twisted. Shooting Berger 185gr Jaugernauts over 42.5Grs of IMR 4064. Once I get my pictures uploaded, I'll post 'em.

I get 26mils total with my Kahles Mil6.

Not that anyone cares but I'm not happy with the glass however. I think I got a bad apple. My SnB and Premier have superior glass. This is even after sending it to Austria for a checkup.

Strange considering there are so many glowing reviews.

the BDC?

Besides the mil marks, it seems there is a BDC visible in this image. Is there just one generic ring? Available for different cartridges? Can these be customized for hand loaders?

That's the parallax adjustment...

How old is your scope?
I read that there was a change in the optics (v1.1?) to address complaints about the resolution/brightness.

Contact Ken Pratt. He is the US distributor. His customer service is second to none.

This is a repeat post from another thread:

Does anyone have pictures of the reticle at lower magnification, at targets in front of grass or some other vegetation?

I'm interested to see what's visible and what isn't, as far as target and reticle are concerned.

EDIT: Response posted right here.

We got a few Kahles K624i in stock with the AMR reticle, I really like these scopes and the AMR reticle is really nice. Here may setup with the K624i with the AMR reticle.

Got mine from Euro Optics a week ago, and have it mounted on the DTA SRS. Did some shooting with a 28" Bartlein 1-7.8tw 5R in 6x47 a couple of evenings ago after the wind had died down to a more moderate 9.5-20mph. Got it on steel at 600yds with N160/DTAC 115s, and enjoyed shooting a decent group with that load. IIRC, I have 16 mils of elevation left at my 100yd zero.

No question - I'm gonna like this AMR reticle. This is my 1st venture into what I consider the upper end scopes - only other 34mm scope I've got is a Bushnell ET35215GZA on my 260 Imp 30*. Really looking forward to shooting some matches with it this summer.

Finally got out the last couple days to get some good use and time behind this scope on my dt srs shooting .308, 6.5x47, and .338 Lapua. Started at 845 yds with 15-22mph 3 o'clock wind. Using the "tree" to holdover for elevation and windage was very fast to get on target and easy to use. Very precise if your aimpoint ends up on on one of the dots. A little tougher if it is in between such as 3.6 mil elevation and 4.3 mil windage as your aimpoint ends up near the middle of the square. I prefer dialing for elevation and it worked very well. Took the target out to 1175 yds and shot as the sun went down. Great sight picture the whole time. I was able to call shots for my partner using this scope. Really like the open center. The wind had gone down some and steadied so I was able to dial windage and I thought using the open center worked great on a 24" steel at that distance. All said about 400 rounds down range using this scope and I am very impressed.

Great to hear that you're liking the scope dreamlander. We've been getting very positive reviews from our customers about the AMR reticle. I've stuck on on my JP 6.5CM and I don't see myself ever wanting to get rid of it.

We've got a couple left for anyone looking to pick one up.
