My disappointing review of my TR .308

Jaybird,

Welcome to the TR club. All the members spend a fair amount of time walking around awkwardly stooped with a sore ass after initiation by Herr David Rooney. Just to let you know where I'm coming from:

http://www.snipershide.com/shooting/snipers-hide-bolt-action-rifles/223193-tacticalrifles-net.html

Please do as Pusher591 suggested and change the title of this thread to include tacticalfiles.net and David Rooney.

Please do a detailed photo session with your smith to document the repairs and share them here. Can you please remove the action and give us a photo of the bedding?

I do feel for you, and don't lose heart on the custom rifle front, and don't let Rooney ruin the sport for you. You will get lots of help and support from guys here on the Hide.

That flush cup actually had me cringe...

Someone uninformed may blame that mistake on Manners, and people have. People have also blamed Stiller for TRs action fuck ups. Stiller makes the Chimera. The danger to suppliers reputations is severe and I quite honestly wonder why they continue to do business with that shit factory considering the risks posed.

I have a BlackOps, Mike Bush, built Recon and when I got it I was looking at the stock and called up Mike and said, you forgot to put the flush cups in as it looked like holes in the stock. He said you need to look again as they are there we just recede them into the stock deep. He was right, they were deep enough as to look like the cups were actually missing. That looks like someone screwed up not only the cup hole but also didn't do it deep enough...that is actually repugnant to look at!

Before I entered this part of the rifle world with an order from Rooney I had a few very nice traditional hunting rifle custom builds (Dakota, Rigby...) so I wasn't sure what to expect, and save for an AR I had never owned a synthetic stock. Well now I am both feet into it and after having work done by both Short Action Customs and Accurate Ordnance I can say that the fit and finish of a tactical rifle could and should equal that of a sporting rifle at the same price point.

The OP has been reamed bad. I am hoping that group pic was off of a mat and not a bench because there are plenty of $700 off the shelf rifles that would crush it in terms of fit, finish, and accuracy. He just needs to get that rifle to a good smith and have things squared away asap.

I personally can't imagine anyone handing over $7K for a custom rifle without doing a lot of research. The Internet has made this research, which used to be quite difficult, trivial. No offense to the OP, but I suspect money is more precious to me.

The flushcups appear to have been installed after the stock was dipped.

Can we just get someone to make, oh I don't know, a hundred copies of these pictures on a flyer and stand in front of their booth at SHOT and hand them out?

Wouldn't have to say a word. Just title the flyers with "The work of Tactical Rifles", and hand them out as people walk by...

Got one in for a transfer and I have to say the one that arrived was worst than this ops. Action is terrible, barrel threads visible by over 1/4" in poorly timed muzzle break absolutely sad to see such poor quality at a premium price.

If they had any business sense sub out the work to someone quality vs.continuing to ship sub par kit

this would be pointless… The people getting ripped are unlikely to be in the firearms industry, and haven't much background. Also walking around a trade show handing out flyers like that can possibly get you in a decent amount of trouble with the convention center, let alone make you look unprofessional. 99.9% of the industry could care less about someone getting jerked, start at the "end user" level if anything

I was being rhetorical...

didn't really come off that way… hard to pick up intonation on the web…

regardless of how you spin it, they aren't qualified to build a hamburger.

So, I know I am new around here, but with all this evidence of this Rooney Looney fella ripping off people for felonious amounts of cash, why hasnt he been shut down? Isnt that why the BBB exists? I am sorry, but If I ever ran into this Looney fellow I wouldnt hold my tongue. Nothing gets me angrier then a scam artist/wannabe tactical guru such as this guy who is blatantly ripping off people

I'd rather watch Rosie odonnel get assfucked by a donkey and the suck the donkey jizz right out of her asshole, gurgle it, then snowball Elton John than have anything to do with tactical rifles and that shitbag Rooney

Umm.. don't mince words sir. Tell us how you REALLY feel.

To the OP, sorry for the experience. Yes, your's is not the first. We have received a lot of complaints about them.

Maybe we should create a forum titled "Support group who were butt hurt by Tactical Rifle's Inc.". Then people can share in a single thread/sticky about their experience. Then other parties can make the determination themselves if they want to do business with Tactical Rifles in the future.

I personally seen this rifle Dave mentioned. After being in Business for 28 years (not firearms related). I was shock to see a blemish on the barrel as soon as I picked up the rifle. Not a small mark by know means. Guns are my tools they are going to get scratched. But not before I open the case up. After looking down the rifle and seeing the threads stick out of the first ports of the brake, again I was pissed and it's not my rifle! I don't know the owner nor anyone who works there, but it's obvious that they are a bunch of shysters. To charge that kind of coins for a rifle and not care about its final Quality control. I won't even mention the action roughness while operating the action. Just very Bad Business!

You need to document all of this really well and put it on youtube! I almost guarantee anyone looking into them searches youtube vids about them. That'll get the word out fast, and also add to the existing butcher job that's already on there.

Hi guys, Just came across this post, And I just wanted to clarify how Manners installs flush cups. First we use a 1/2" end mill to make pocket, then a 5/8 to make a small counter sink around the cup pocket so the stock does not chip out when we tap the hole.

This stock has my name on it, I would like to offer the original poster, if he would like to send us the stock I would be more than happy to install the cups per our specs. And get right back to him. Thank you very much

Now THAT is a first class company!

Now that is a classy response to the OP's issue. Very kind of you sir.

THAT! Is why I ordered a Manners stock!

The flush cups on my Manners are PERFECT! But I am glad to know that if I need help, the company representative is right here to help me. I love this Hide so much.

That flush cup looks like it was driven in with a hammer from the opposite side, poor attention to detail on the obvious makes me want to look closely at the not so obvious.

A fool and his money are soon parted...

Sorry, but how do you drop that kind of money with someone without doing the research?

I cry at night if I think about Tactical-rifles.net.
OP, you should be getting way more then that at that price point.

The reality is that a couple of years ago there were some pretty good reviews of TR rifles and the owner was quoted left and right by various gun "gurus". There is actually a glowing review of TR still on that other "sniper" forum. And it sounds like Rooney has been pretty litigious towards any one saying something negative.

Don't confuse Rooney how to do a proper install with reasoning and class...... He would rather stick to his cinder block and monkey wrench assembly practice.

If the finish on the rifle and the long delay and getting the Attorney involved is bad enough the group you posted for a $7000 rifle would make me very unhappy. A TRG 22 at half the price will shoot 0.5 to 0.75 moa right out of the box at half the price. I sincerely hope the group was shooter error. You have had enough heartache with the rifle as it is. Here's hoping things get straightened out soon.

Yes, it has the consistency of baby shit after a bowl of peas!

Right you are, but here's the question. Would you rather stand in front of the 'hide proudly showing off your TR build, or your diaper full of baby shit? As for myself, I'm gonna feed my 6 month old son some extra peas and maybe some carrots as well. I'll post a range report shortly :D

I would never have anything to do with TacticalRifles.net in the first place. I would go to a PROVEN and Reputable builder that I researched thoroughly before laying down my money.

I was merely saying that their consistency/track record for bad work is impeccable.

I am sure they will still get plenty of business....from AR15.com.....

This is a review of my experience of purchasing a custom rifle from Tactical Rifles out of Zephyrhills, FL. The experience has been interesting at best. Unfortunately the experience has been mostly negative with a very few positives at all. My best advice for anyone going through a big purchase, whether it be a gun or something else that they value is Buyer Beware! Check the Better Business Bureau, get online and read blogs surrounding the product (for me I should have read more shooting blogs with everyday Joe American and not rifle magazine reviews where people get paid to shoot the rifles.)

After a very long wait from order to receiving the rifle I had been on a roller coaster of anticipation and delay. I picked it up on Monday 12/16/2013 and finally got to the fire it Wednesday 12/18/13. Unfortunately by the time I received the rifle most of my joy of waiting for the rifle had been taken because I had to have an attorney contact the company after a wait of over 2 years (the industry standard is about 10 months).

When I finally received the rifle, I was very disappointed with the cosmetics of the rifle itself. As you will read in the review below, there are several issues that I should not have had to deal on a custom rifle that cost $7300 (price includes Nightforce NXS 5.5-22ZS Optic). It was very disappointing and disheartening. Of course after some of the ups and downs of waiting over 2 years for it, when I went to pick it up I had the question in my mind of "I wonder what's wrong with the rifle?"

I ordered a Tactical Rifles M40 in .308 win with TR Match Grade Chimera receiver with spiral fluted bolt. . The barrel was a #7 Contour barrel with custom black finishing and a muzzle brake. I also ordered the Manners T4 stock with adjustable cheek piece. I ordered side mounted flush cups for QD swivels and the swivels themselves. The optic I chose was a Nightforce NXS 5.5-22x50 ZS with mil-dot reticle and the Chimera scope rings. The hydrographics paint scheme is the ATACs camo. I ordered the Pelican Case with laser cut foam for it to be shipped in. The order date was 7/20/2011. The date I received the rifle was 12/16/2013. The total cost of the rifle with optic was $7297.00.

When I received the rifle, the hydrographics job they did was lacking at best. Again, it should have been pristine for the amount of money that I spent. Around the safety switch the hydrographics looked sloppy and around the flush cups the hydrographics are cracking and chipping. My flush cups were not "flush" on the rifle at all and the QD swivels that I had purchased were not sent at all. When I picked up the rifle, the magazine was shipped separately so I did not have that with the shipment. The only paperwork I received was a letter stating that the magazine and other accessories were shipped separately. The rifle had not been cleaned, and was told by the owner that this was proof that the rifle had been test fired. As far as the rifle scope rings, bolt, action and scope, all were tight and looked great. I took the rifle home and waited for UPS to receive the rest of my accessories. Of course they didn't show up until 2 days later.

When I did receive the accessories, all that I received was the 5 round magazine and the packaging and allen wrench of the TR Scope Rings. I did not receive any serial numbered target that I was told would come, nor did I receive a T-Shirt that they said they would be sending. The t-shirt isn't a big deal, it was just a little frustrating when I was told to be expecting things and didn't receive them. I also received no invoice, paperwork about the rifle, nor did I receive any documentation regarding the Nightforce Scope or the Manners Stock.

I then was able to shoot the rifle the next day and this is where a lot of things came together and this is the "good" part of the whole thing. The rifle shot beautifully. I was only able to shoot long enough to verify zero and "enjoy" the rifle. I shot Federal GMM 168gr HPBT. I was out 100 yards and after a short break in period, I put a total of 20 rounds down range. I couldn't believe how well the groupings were. I'm not sure how to measure them and will be buying a caliper. (Do you measure center to center or overall of shots fired?)

To be fair, I sent Dave Rooney, President of Tactical Rifles and email explaining my disappointment of the hydrographics and flush cups. He was very quick to call me back and said that he would be glad to redo the hydrographics and fix the flush cups at no cost. His only request was to do it after the Christmas holidays. I also emailed them about the QD swivels and the missing paperwork and was told that I would be receiving them in the mail, but as you can imagine I have received nothing to dated. So I am now looking for a local gunsmith who can go over the rifle and help me with the issues I have.

I must say that the waiting period, missing accessories and documentation and the cosmetic issues are a huge strike! The shoddy work on the hydrographics and flush cups really put me over the edge. I really like Dave Rooney and he has been a great person to speak to. Either that, or he is really a great talker, but the weight of the issues, considering what I paid for the rifle, is just too much.

Some have asked me if the wait time is worth it and that's a loaded question. Does the rifle shoot well? Yes, It shoots well, but in my opinion, the rifle I received should not have left the shop looking the way it did, again considering the price I paid for the rifle.

I think Dave Rooney and Tactical Rifles bit off more than they can chew. i think they are going to lose the court case now filed. I think they have poisoned the ENTIRE pool of shooters to draw business from. I'd also not be surprised to learn that parts vendors/makers stop doing business with them and they go out of business in short order. My suspicion is they'll be declaring bankruptcy soon. I also think they'll simply start over under a different name til people figure out who they are again. I hope this lawsuit and enough cases where good customers have been screwed out of tons of money sink them, once and for all so stories like this one quit emerging because they quit happening. Then again, Good Lord knows how many rifles he has done this too in the years he's been 'building' rifles. I'm shocked and astounded we haven't heard of a rifle bomb that blew up in someone's face that Tactical Rifles created. I'm suspicious those cases are out there too, and that we just haven't heard about them. What he is doing taking that kind of money from customers and sending out what he passes off as a precision custom rifle is tantamount to fraud in my opinion.

Just posing a question of out sheer curiosity...

If TR takes 2 years to put out a rifle...

And Manners is quoted at @ 16-18 weeks...

Then why in fuck's name are they hydro-dipping a stock when they could've just ordered the pattern to begin with?

I'd hope he has $7k worth of arse to kick. You would have been so much better off with a 5R straight from Milehigh, or sniperpx.com. Or cut the price in half and have a GAP Rock. This shouldn't be tolerated anymore. Bankrupt that place, and put the owner behind bars. I'd lawyer up, not let them touch the gun again (PLEASE) seriously though not to offend the OP but my 5R shoots circles around those groups, much less my custom sticks, and I've never put 7K in a gun, and never will. Manners offers that same scheme, and where the heck does M40 come into play here? It might be time for hide members/ longrangehunting etc. to put this Co. outta biz.

Ok, I worded that wrong. I never meant that to sound as it did, more as a joke than an insinuation that you would do business with TR. My apologies for the misunderstanding.
