I have a place where I can shoot out close to a mile on my hunting grounds. I would like your input on what size targets at various ranges I should put on the range. I will be hanging steel targets. Also some good things to shoot off of using various shooting positions would be help ful as well. Info would be appreciated.

I shoot at a range with 1 1/2, and 1moa size targets, it's kinda cool. Another range has 10" and 5" out to 1200, then full size IPSC's. Half moa targets get tough to hit with no berm behind them.

Your budget may be the decisive element.

I've never been to any comps or matches to see the setups . My place won't have to have berms because its a across a long valley with various ridges that you can put targets on at different distances. I'm not doing this for money, I'm doing it so me , my son can shoot to distance. Ill probably get some of the hide members here to meet up and shoot for fun on some weekends. I've picked the shooting sit out and their will be mostly downhill shots.

I chose to go a different route. I had 6 24"x24" ar500 plates cut so I could paint them white (Krylon fusion white ) and then use cut outs I made with an exacto knife and cardboard. I did this using a protractor so my circles are 3" at 600 ect... I got the bigger plates because its a pain in the ass LONG RANGE and trying to hit a 10" gong when if your a little off you KNOW where your at.
Alot of guys use orange as their target color... I've found that Krylon fluorescent green works TEN TIMES BETTER as far as seeing your hits at over 1,000 yards.
But all in all , I like to have a little room for error so I can be 7 " off at 1100 yards abd still having the ability to jot down the current atmosphere and correct my dope to hit 1/2 moa circles.

All I have are pictures of the targets at 500, 600, 700 and 823 in my back yard

Everything is AR500 other then the 9" gongs and the head on the headhunter

Miniature Hostage targets located at 500 and 600
3”x 5” diamonds
5” rounds
8” rounds
12” Squares
JC’s Hostage target – a high use target, tends to get a lot of use located at 700
A couple 9” gongs
A homemade Head hunter target with the 12” square as a chest plate

We have steel for another private range to accommodate shooting to 3600 yards as far as 1 moa targets.

Total on this range
Six 5” square targets ½” AR500
Three 6” square targets ½” AR500
Three 12" Square targets ½” AR500
Two 24” square targets ½” AR500
One 36” square target ½” AR500
Three 100% IPSC targets ½” AR500

The shooting platform is elevated to 10' and allows three shooters to shoot prone easily as well as a shooting bench for those needing. The platform is very solid.

Cheers

B. Thank you for that info and your time doing this for me.

Thank you guys, you all are very helpful here on the hide. When I get it put together some of you guys around tuscaloosa can go shoot with me .

OS-OH, nice tower!
How much you have into it?

About $1500.00, with the help of a few shooting partners and three weekends it was done. we built it to be rock solid. (all treated wood)

Mark -- the smaller then moa targets are used a lot when the conditions are making the larger easy, the mini hostage and the 700 hostage get hammered at a lot good fun and practice.

cheers

....And here is the COF for a new match that will be held a few times a year at Rolling Hills Rifle and Pistol Club near Camdenton, Missouri starting this spring. Average Distance is 626.76 yards, with 37 shots. Maximum distance shot is 1100 yards.

If you don't have berms or something to spot your misses, then a bigger target with hit zones painted works well to keep from wasting ammo on un-spotted misses.

Thanks for your input, that's awsome stuff. I'm excited about doing this.

I'm nowhere as good as these guys but I just went to the local ship yard and scored a butt load of steel. It's not "ar500" steel but at 400 to 1000 yards an 5.56 and 308 does zero damage to the steel..

I scored 19 pieces of steel today for free!!!

Good luck!!!

Sir,

We like to put up 1MOA and 2MOA targets at whatever distance we plan to shoot.

So for us, we have targets up every 50-75 yards, All the way out to 1500 yards.

If that's not in your budget, try to get something every 100 yards in 2 sizes. Something bigger and something more challenging. You guys will have a ton of fun!!!

Good luck, let us know if we can help with anything.

Jake
