Tikka T3 Thread

I have a couple of Josh Tikka prefit nut barrels, its super easy to change, you just need a barrel vise, the nut wrench, a torque wrench and the GO and NO GO gauges of your caliber. You can change barrels in less than 10 minutes.

Looks great. How difficult was the original barrel removal? That's what is holding me back from trying this. I've herd it can be very difficult.

The factory barrel was removed by Josh at PVA then I do the swap between the nut barrels. I'm planning to do another Tikka next year and I will try to remove the factory barrel by myself.

How does it shoot now?

First outing was last Friday, .75-1 MOA with the bipod and a rear bag. I'm taking it out tomorrow for one more test run. She was a .5 MOA gun if I did my part. I also mentally will feel better if I know it's bedded the right way :).

I just ordered the Accurate 223 mags, pretty much a 308 mag with a plastic insert to fit the 223. I will let you know how it is when it gets here.

Any update on this? I got the polymer mag but would prefer metal. Also, did you buy directly from them or another seller?

I received the mag, and I've only been able to try a few rounds through it due to bottom metal issues. It fed great, really smooth but on the last round my bolt kept riding over top of the cartridge, I'm attributing that to my bottom metal problem and not the magazine. Once I have my stock bedded, that should eliminate the issue and I should be able to put the magazine through its paces.

Got one of my Tikkas back from SAC yesterday with a new barrel and some paint! CTR action, Proof 8 twist 6.5 Creedmoor Heavy Palma 22", Sterk bolt handle, KRG XRay chassis. Planning on getting the first rds down over Christmas. This thing will be shooting Prime ammo exclusively.

Man, that looks awesome!

I got my MDT magazine in today (without the binder plate). The rounds will get stuck under the feed ramp, but they don't get stuck on the way into the chamber. They get stuck when the round is moving up into feeding position. It looks like the follower is tilting and the bullet is nosing down. It can be fixed by reaching in and pulling the case back as long as the bullet isn't seated too far out.

So if we want to load up 10 rounds and see them feed through cleanly is our only option $70ish steel mags? Is it caliber dependent? I'm trying to put together a .223.

That looks awesome! Love it. Now I'll have to offer handles in Blue!

The polymer MDT .223 mags have worked great for me so far running in a T3 varmint on a KRG bravo. No issues running rounds from 2.25 to 2.45 COAL.

I tried my new MDT 10 round 223 mag today. No feeding issues so far, about 60 rounds today.

Those that are running the MDT 223 mags in the KRG Xray, do you notice much front/back movement once you have "clicked" the mag in? So, if you grab the bottom of the magazine and rock it back towards the trigger guard, do you notice any/alot of movement? I find there is alot of movement in my case.

Josh ended up cutting my barrel off so as not to ruin the action.

Is everyone installing a picatinny rail for their scope mount?

Could someone please explain the benefit of mounting your rings to a rail instead of mounting directly to the receiver using the integrated dovetail grooves?

Because of needing to have more elevation (as in 20moa or 30moa). You could do it with rings that have the elevation built in but most find it easier to have the rail with the elevation built in. That way the rings are parallel to the rail. Also it is easier to reindex the scope in case you have to take it off with a picatinny rail than the dovetails. Getting everything back in the same place is important for eye relief and other things.

Did I miss anything else?

It's much easier to find rings that mount to a pic rail, instead of dovetails. I personally feel it's more secure to mount to a rail. And like mentioned above, you get more elevation with a rail. But Sphur mounts can mount directly to the dovetail so that's a very good, but very expensive route to go as well.

Has anyone had any problems running regular 10rnd aics Acurate mags with their tikka in an MPA chassis? Is it smooth feeding? Does it feed out of the KRG chassis better?

Accurate Mags work great in my KRG, but I had to set the tension pretty tight. They don't drop free, which I prefer since you can't accidentally drop your mag if you bump the release.

What do you mean by set the tension high? Do you mean adjusting the forearm and trigger guard to make the mag fit in tighter?

Thanks. My MDT mag has about 1/4" movement back and forth (if you hold it from the bottom, you can "rock it"). The forearm can't be moved any more as the screw holes will not be aligned. And, I really don't feel like taking the action out and disassembling the trigger guard to move it forward a little. Might just live with it for now. Feeds fine, just a bit annoying to have that much movement.

Anyone running an objective lens larger than 50mm? I'm trying to decide between a 6-24x50mm and 8-32x56mm SFP for a benchrest rifle based on a Tikka T3X Varmint .223.

Thanks for posting.

What rings and rail are you using and what kind of clearance do you have?

Also, are you happy with 25x at 100 to 200 yards? Or do you think you would like more magnification?

Spurh one piece mount. Mountain Tactical 20 moa rail. Have miles of clearance bt objective and barrel. TT525 is best scope I’ve handled and like the magnification range for any distance.

I was hoping the AICS mags wouldn't cost as much as the now $74 CTR mags. So much for that hope :)

I have one ordered but in the meantime I put the T3x action in to to the X-Ray today and tried fit with my friend's Magpul AICS mag from his RPR. Couldn't get it to fully seat. Clearly some abrasions on the feed lips that prevented it from fully inserting. Although they're cheaper, not sure I want to deal with taking a dremel to one. I put the T3x back in factor stock for shooting for the next week or so while I wait on the Accurate Mags.

The MDT plastic mags seem to work fine in T3's for me although not in a chassis but from Atlasworx floor plates or even the CTR. You can even run 223 mdt mags through a CTR floor plate. The MDT mags will fit quite loose in the CTR but work.
