I have been told that 20 thousands is where you want to be. If I load to that length I am to long for mag. My question is can you be to far from the lands?

I use the process in the berger reloading manual for the seating depth (preferring to jump rather than jam so I don’t have mishaps with projectiles being pulled out accidentally). In my limited experience it is best to follow a process rather than a rule of thumb.. what works for one rifle and projectile combination may not work for another. That’s just my lay view. Others mileage may differ

If trying to get the longest possible oal and mag feed, make sure that oal will allow full mag capacity. Sometimes a long oal will reduce mag capacity.

Anything that is listed as an absolute by some other handloader is to be viewed with extreme caution. There are SOME absolutes (like primers MUST be flush or below), but they are a lot more rare than many would have you believe.

I am just going to load to mag length and see what happens.

I suggest that you try a known good powder charge and experiment with different oal’s from min to mag length. Depending on your rifle's dimensions you will find two or more sweet spots, one being very broad. You’ll be able to fine tune into the middle of a broad node. Hopefully your freebore is long enough to do this.
