I'm looking to have a 6.5CM barrel made or buy one already made so I can have it on hand when and if I decide to replace a 308 barrel. Where is the best place to purchase the barrel? I'm wanting a 22" Bartlein 5R 1:8 twist and threaded 5/8x24. I'll be shooting factory ammo exclusively. My actions are Rem 700.

If you want a bartlein and you are a factory or at least not uncouth threads then bug holes/southern precision rifles is what comes to mind. Have them spin up a nut prefit, that’s sort of their thing from what I understand.

I'm looking at the Bartlein 5R 8 twist 6.5CM but it is 29". Is it meant to be cut down to whatever length you choose?

They have prechambered barrels?

Generally the barrels you can see are blanks and not chambered for anything so yes, you would be able to cut them down to whatever you want. Even if it were chambered you could still cut it off to whatever you wanted.

no. thats just the blank

Sorry I'm new at this custom rifle stuff. So this is what I'm looking to order:

After I receive these parts then I would send all to a gunsmith to cut, crown, thread, chamber and install in the action?

Yes, OR vvv

it's already there. they can be the gunsmith too...

Go ahead and call them up, explain your question. Im sure they would be more than glad to explain the whole process to you. "Its sort of their thing" Both distributing as well as working on. Or you can send it all to any smith you care to. It seems you have nothing but open possibilities at this point.

Also, from the surgeon action in your cart: I thought this was for an action you already have you are wanting to rebarrel, or are you wanting to build a whole new rifle?

Now I'm thinking just having a whole new barreled action. Is that Surgeon a good action?

First of all, define what your intentions are with the rifle, as that defines the contour and length.
Second, there are numerous high quality barrel manufacturers in the US, bartlein is definitely good to go.
What you are looking at is a barrel blank, it is turned to the finished diameter, the bore is finished, but the barrel is not chambered. It can be put on ANY rifle by a competent gunsmith, as the gunsmith will be threading the barrel for whatever action.

are you handy with tools? If so, you can go with a pre-chambered barrel nut and install it yourself, though it requires some special tools. barrel vise, action wrench, go gauge and a decent torque is recommended, though not absolutely required.
What action do you currently have? It may or may not be worth the investment in a good barrel.
What kind of stock is the current rifle in?

For the price of a bartlein barrel and having it threaded, chambered and installed (the smith will want to true the action, an added expense), you could buy a Howa Chassis Rifle in 6.5 and call it good.

so you do from getting a prefit, to a full custom with a surgeon, but don't know anything about it?

i'd second the nucleus or origin in this case.

I don't want to have to wait months for an action which is why I'm not going with the nucleus. Yes I'm new at this and haven't owned a Surgeon action before and this will be my first time getting custom parts to have assembled. All the rifles I have purchased with custom parts have already been assembled and were used aside from new factory rifles.

I want something with a Rem 700 footprint to be able to use my AIAT chassis and manners stock. I am handy with tools but I'd rather not do it myself. My intentions with the rifle is a pretty much a high quality do it all but 99% target shooting.

unless you do a prefit that's already chambered/threaded, you're probably gonna be waiting a while if you buy a blank

Shilen has an action that is a 700 footprint.
It is a Stiller made to Shilens specs.
Stiller, of course also has actions that fit the 700 footprint.
They are likely not as refined as the surgeons, kelby's et al... but still good actions.

You can actually order a barreled action from Shilen, they make a good barrel and a good trigger.
Drop it straight in your chassis, done deal.
