Nice groups. Good post.

I was looking for some load data on a 30'' pipe 300win mag.

I'm running a bartlein 30'' 5r 1-10 Rem 700 trued.

I'm hoping to break the barrel in this weekend, anyway just looking for some advice on charge weight. Nothin in the books really available for running long pipe, its always 24inch stuff.

Because I'm running that longdong I don't want to under charge. I want to work up some loads from minimum charge weight to max.

I have LR-23 because that's all that's available right now, 250prim, 208gr. Amax.

I plane on going with some 230's soon, and hopefully l can score some h1000 or retumbo, but for now this is what I got.

Have you ever messed with LR-23 ?

Good Morning Gentlemen,

I am now starting to load for my new Masterpiece Arms 300 WM and have been paying

close attention to this thread for initial guidance. The rifle is chambered for the 190 gr. FGMM

but I have no plan to shoot that. i just picked up a set of redding S Type comp dies and plan

to use a .334 NiTri bushing. I have 100 Norma cases and a bunch of Federal match magnum primers.

I will use H1000 as propellant and will try the Berger 230/215's/208 Amaxes to see what shoots best.

As far as accuracy goes with a 26 inch barrel, I have always gotten better accuracy from reloader 22. Say I get a .3 inch group with reloader 22 hour usually get a .5 inch group with H 1000. However, in my 30 inch Broughton 5C barrel ,pushing the 215 Berger with H1000 and the 230 Berger with Retumbo gives me AWESOME speed and accuracy. But it seems like Retumbo will shoot the 208 AMAX 215 and 230 just as good as H 1000.
For instance, I'm running 80 Grains of Retumbo with the 208 at 3.620 inches (AI mag length) at 3,045 fps out of my Broughton and it's VERY ACCURATE.
With a 28" bbl H1000 will probably be the best in terms of getting the most of "powder burnt ". I've been able to push the 215 at 3,045 fps with H1000 ! 10.2 mils to 1330 yards. But if H1000 won't do it, there is a member on here with a 28 or 29" Bartlein that's getting EXCELLENT speed and accuracy out of IMR4831. You may want to just pick up a pound at a time... H1000, imr7828ssc, Retumbo , Imr4831, and even power pro 4000mr. The 4000 mr was pushing the 208 AMAX out of my 5R at over 3,000 fps. It's a powder that will push the 200's to 215's with GREAT SPEED AND ACCURACY.

---------------------------------------------

Jon, I shoot the 230 hybrids out of a 30" Broughton 5c. With 76.36 grains of Retumbo, and RP brass I'm getting about 2950 fps. With Nosler and Norma, I'm getting about 2925. The rifle still hammers, but the bbl has certainly slowed down. As a matter of fact, 76.36 is a lower node because I am seating them 2.975" to the ogive which has way less pressure. So thus weekend I'm going to bump it up to around 77 & 78 grains. Try and hit a higher node.

I tried the 230 hybrid target with retumbo today. 75.7 grains netted 2885 fps and accuracy in the .3's. I had the same accuracy at 0.020 and 0.100 off the lands. The barrel is a 28" benchmark. I'm going to work up to 77.0 and see what the groups look like. Thanks for your help.

smoker,

Very nice rifle. I love Tikka. unbelievably accurate for some $650 rifle. And for its weight too and how thin is the barrel.

What kind of Magazine you are using? Would it work with no modification to the Tikka stock?

Whats your speed and barrel length with that load? Im pushing the 215's out of a 28" Bartlein at 2950 fps with 76.6 gr H1000 and 210m primer. Im pretty happy with the speed and the load. Just curious what the extra .6 grains makes in fps difference.

I don't shoot with a chrono. It's the 26" barrel. I just shoot for pleasure, although I'm very "personally" competitive. A chronograph is in my future.

The mag is an AI 338 non CIP in CDI bottom metal. The CDI bottom metal is using the .060" longer paddle. The action required a feed ramp to feed reliably because the mag could not get the cartidge high enough. I inlet and bedded the DBM myself. A skim bed will not work on these stocks. There is not alot of material that had to be removed from the stock.

NOTE: These are very stout loads and should not be attempted in a std chamber.

Rifle:
Savage M110
XLR Chassis
28" Criterion Barrel; 300 Win magnum Match chamber (.160 freebore)

Federal Military Pulldown brass
81.0 grains of Retumbo (very compressed)
208 Amax seated .010" off the lands (3.640" COAL)
Federal Magnum primer

3130 FPS. No signs of pressure.. at all. I imagine this is due to the match chamber.

I am having a new barrel cut for my 300 WSM. I am having the chamber cut for the 215 hybrids. How much freebies should I have cut? I do plan to run them out of an AICS mag so my COAL is limited to 2.960-965. Do these cancel each other out? What COAL do you all have with the 215 hybrids?

Factory sendero Sfii 300 wm 26" 1-10
Nosler brass
Cci 200
3.679 oal .002 off lands
79 grains r-26
215 hybrids
3030 at 55 degrees at sea level basically.
A touch of pressure but no bolt
Lift issues! With the 210 and 215 they really tighten up with both h1000 and r-26 at the higher velocities for me!

As always don't try this load work up and find what is adequate for your rifle!

Re 208 ELM question
04/18/2016

I have a question regarding the Hornady 208 ELD-M. If you are shooting this bullet, are you guy's jumping this bullet more than the original 208? I can not get an acceptable group at 300 with this bullet. The original 208's shot well for me. I do have a new barrel with a .125 freebore for the 208's - 210's. Have shot 50 rounds with it and still am not pleased. I have tried H1000 and H4831. They do good at 100, but that wont work at distance. I have a canister of RL22 which I may try next. My speed is good at 2780 with a moderate load of H4831 and H1000.

Barrel: Bartlein 1:10 27". .125 freebore.

Start at 10 thousandths off the lands and increase in .5 increments out to a 50
Thousandths jump.

I'd do 2 rounds per to save some time but it'll also break in the barrel

You are shooting them too slow. Increase speed by about 100 FPS. I'm jumping .060" or so.

215M primers in close to same load gave me fits. It was the crap QC on the fed primers that produced high SD.

A softer primer (ruski) or CCI200/BR2 better than halved the SD and gave sub 0.5 MOA consistent groups.

Jax,..the norma brass has I think quite a bit more capacity than the RWS, hence the lower velocity? Try running it up in QuikLoad as you may be able to push faster safely?

I am loading 208 amax over RL-22 into FC brass. I have noticed that federal brass is heavier than others and I am assuming this means less volume inside. With a recent test I was loading per Hornadys data and getting velocities above what the book indicates. Worked up to the max load with this result.

72.4gr RL-22
215M
FC 07 Brass
208gr AMax
COL 3.43"

5 shot group with an avg velocity of 3059fps

Just to touch on your comments, using FC brass and Norma brass with identical bullets, primers, OAL and using RL17 for powder , the Norma brass required 1.4 grains MORE of the same powder to achieve the same velocity as the FC brass on a 5 shot average with a low SD.

Norma Brass
208 ELD-M
CCI 250
2.86" to ogive

I ran two ladder tests at 300 yards this afternoon, from 76.2-78.5gr of H1000, both ascending and descending. I found a node from 77.7-78.2. Between both tests, this node yielded an average of 0.44"/0.14MOA vertical spread. I will be running with 78.0gr most likely. I had no pressure signs, and I suspect I could venture into the 79.5gr range before things start getting hairy.

More testing today. Ran the following:

Norma Brass
208 ELD-M
CCI 250
2.86" to ogive
78.0gr H1000
26.5” Lilja

7 shot average was 2980, SD of 13.8. The neck tension was kind of all over the place, so I expect to be in the single digits on the next firing. Shot this load all the way out to 1650 today successfully, on a 66% IPSC silhouette.

300 WSM

I recently worked a load with RL26 in the 300 WSM. It turned out to be a fantastic hunting load that is surprisingly temperature stable. I did, however, experience some lot to lot variance when changing from 1lb bottles to an 8lb jug. The 8lb jug ended up being a slower burn rate and required .6 grains more powder to put it where it needed to be.

The initial load from the 1lb bottle:

300 WSM, 26" Pac Nor bbl, Win 70 WSM action
68.7 grains of RL26
200 grain ELD-X seated .020" off the lands
CCI250
Norma brass
.3 MOA group at 340 yards
3017 fps at 70*F and 3010 fps at 17*F

Reworked load from the 8lb bottle uses the same components above with the powder charge increased to 69.3 grains to equal the initial results.

On this second load is this what you have tested in your rifle to be best load with 190 SMK? I am still experimenting with powder amounts and just curious about others success and other general safety consideration that I should be making just getting into hand loading

Started last night, had trouble finding info for this powder in 208 gr. Hornady did not have it listed got data from hodgdon. 78gr max load. Start load 71.7. Increasing in .5 increments. I seated the bullets at 3.6, my chamber measured at 3.668. The listed 3.42 col is way too short for a 200 grain bullet imo.

Anybody shooting the 208 gr. Eld-m? Planning to load them in win brass over h1000.

Work and family has kept me away a while, but getting back slowly.

I have a Tac 300 that “really” liked the old 208amax. Sweet spot on that was 76.0 H100 jumping .030. Used prepped and sorted Remington brass and Federal 210s. Working now with the ELDm now that my supply of AMAX’s is about gone. Right now got it nailed down to 76.0-77.0gr with all else same. Next time out will go in .3gr steps to see if anything jumps out of what already is looking good. Then will test for length. Right now, it seems to be just a tad faster than the equivolent in the AMAX. This is using a different chrony though...Magnetospeed then, LabRadar now.

Will report back in a week.

I have a box of 168 a max I was thinking of loading up for whitetail. Hodgdon list loads for h1000 in win brass with wlrm. Starting at 79 grain with a max of 84 gr. Around 3110 fps.
Anyone loaded in this combo? 84 gr. Seems a little heavy... maybe I'm just being timid.

These loads hold .5 MOA or better out to 1,500 yards with no more than 3” of vertical dispersion. They are also located in the center of a .7 grain wide velocity flat spot.

The 208 eld-m out performs the 215 Hybrid in every way from this rifle so I’ve made the switch. I have also found this to be true with the 225 eld-m vs 230 Berger OTM Tactical out of a 26” 1-9 gain twist Bartlien 300wm built on a Deviant.

*3.560” coal is the longest I have found to not damage the meplat under recoil in my AICS magazines.

*All of these loads show slight signs of pressure at .6 grains above these charge weights and are temperature stabile from 90°F down to 30°F.

Great info. It is interesting that it took an additional 0.2 grain of powder with the 208s vs an additional 0.6 grains with the 215s to maintain the same velocity between virgin and the once fired brass.

Hornady actually offers that combination in factory loaded ammo. So the short answer is although you can load that bullet, the magazine length will probably prevent you from being able to seat the bullet out far enough to contact the lands. Don't let that stop you from trying the combination.

Yes, the long bullets won’t be seated optimally. The short mags really come into their own when they can be seated out in a medium or long action. I’ve realized this myself with a 7 SAUM.
That being said, I am putting together a multi-barrel short action hunter for 223, 6.5, and 300 WSM. While I know the 300 wsm will be a bit held back, I’d love to see how much ground can be made back up with R26?? If you can get it over 2800 in a 22-24” barrel, then I think it will really perform.

Anyone using R26 in short action 300 wsm?

2888fps Ave (Prochrono @15')
13 ES
5 SD

Temperature in high 40s. Altitude 1300'

This bullet has a secant ogive that seems to like a bit of jump based upon my experience in this rifle. Fine tuning in the .025-.040" range still in work.

Update: my rifle seems to like 0.030" jump with this bullet

12 thousands jump off the lands is what I seat to.

This gives me 2950 FPS.
Full length size brass in Redding dies.

ETA: I don't know if it's been brought up but Norma brass seems to have the largest capacity. FGMM brass/Hornady seem a little tighter.

I had 5 boxes of Hornady 225gr ELD M projectiles and I noticed the bullets in 1 of the 5 boxes were noticeably different. Looking at the lot numbers on the 5 boxes, the oldest is the different one.

Ogive, boat tail length, boattail taper and tip material are all different. I loaded a few and had to adjust seating depth until the same CBTO was achieved. The resulting COAL was visibly different I'll shoot them at short range < 350 yards as I'm sure the visible differences would yield practical B.C. and trajectory differences at long range. They obviously changed the design at some point. As sensitive to theses bullets are to jump distance (for my rifle anyway), I hope they still shoot ok at the same CBTO. Pisses me off as they aren't cheap and I don't appreciate the variability.

Update:

Hornady confirmed a design change in April 2018 to help with transonic performance.

Yes sir,

I am getting 212 eldx at 2875 fps and 208 ELDM at 2930 fps out of my 22” 300wsm with RL-26. The 208s shot just slightly better so I will likley be going that route.
