Rebarrel Tikka or trade for MPA BA?

The thread title says it all. What say you?

My Tikka T3X TAC A1 barrel in 6.5CM has at least several hundred rounds of life left in it, but I'm at a decision point as to whether to rebarrel or replace the rifle with a Masterpiece Arms BA in the same caliber. Obviously the rebarreling option would cost several hundred dollars less than dealer-trading for the MPA, but it appears from reading through a great many posts here on the Hide that the components in the MPA rifle are an upgrade from the good but proprietary Tikka.

I also like the idea of the MPA being chambered for specific factory rounds, notably the Hornady 140 ELD-M, as I really detest reloading. I've done pistol and shotgun for 50+ years, and did enough "non-precision" bottleneck rifle in the '80s to know I don't want to get sucked into buying more equipment to chase the perfect 6.5CM handload. My Tikka will put Prime 130s into consistent half-inch 5-round groups at 100 and the MPA has their 3-round-group 3/8" guarantee, and I've seen numerous 5-round groups at that or better size. I think Frank has said that 3/8" groups are his threshold for competition; if I can get that without handloading, it's a no-brainer for me personally.

The only potential downside I see in the MPA is the button-rifled barrel as opposed to a cut-rifled barrel - but I've also read reports here that the Spencer barrels have an excellent reputation.

I've also considered a full custom but don't see how to come near the $2500-2800 street price of the MPA with the same or similar components.

Setting the cost aside, what other pros/cons would you consider in making this decision? Thanks.

PVA's John Hancock (ARC Nucleus, Rock Creek barrel, KRG Bravo, Timney trigger) s $2000 as well. That said if you like your Tikka, just have whoever cuts your chamber to cut it to Prime/Hornady/etc factory specification and shoot your factory ammunition. The rifles coming out of Tacops are done this way with he .308 FGMM and they shoot like freaking laser beams.

Pre-fits are another story...

If you are after a MPA rifle to scratch an itch, no one here will turn you away. MPA makes a great rifle. If it were me... rebarrel the Tikka. Why? I will not be able to shoot the difference and I would put the cost savings into a few more cases of Prime.

A good smith can chamber to shoot the bullets of your choice, as PBWalsh said. Bartlein, Rock Creek, etc... all will shoot half to sub half moa. Not knowing your intended use for the rifle (assuming steel matches, not benchrest) either one will be accurate enough.

I have a MPA in 6.5 and a Tikka CTR.

The MPA is a tac driver, if I do my part I can get 1/2 MOA 5 shots groups every time, if I really do my part 1/4 MOA group, usually 4 of 5. This is not cherry picking. It is quite heavy, bench gun only. This is with Hornady 140 ELDM reloads.

My CTR is lighter and mobile, haven't had time to fully explore its accuracy yet.

I haven't shot any boxed ammo.

Yeah, it's an itch. An expensive itch. And I appreciate your pointing it out. Which is why I started this thread...

Honestly, I think a Tac A1 re-barreled with a Bartlein Gain Twist or similar would drop you sub 1/2 MOA if you really do your part and probably consistent 1/2 MOA gun. Lowlight did it with his, went to 22" and picked up ~115 FPS on average and his accuracy improved. Considering stock Tac A1s are capable 1/2 MOA guns, that's where my rough numbers come from. Put the extra coin into glass or ammo. JMO.
