New shooter looking for glass for bolt-action 338 Lapua with 26" barrel. Would like to get out to 1000 yards. Budget is $1000 or under. No preference on mil or moa. Desire FFP and RTZ. Any advice/recommendation will be appreciated. Would like to keep it as simple as possible, meaning not a bunch of extra features I won't use. Daytime shooting targets/steel only. Thanks again.

If you're considering used scopes, a non-illuminated SWFA 5-20x50 HD or Sightron SIII 6-24x50 will do the job in that price range very well. Both have a reputation for having reliable turrets and nice glass. The Sightron is a little less expensive. The SWFA has an edge with 10 mil-per-turn turrets and a slightly better reticle, although the Sightron has a floating dot center if you like that feature. You can get cheap aftermarket zero stops for both. There are good examples of either scope available now in the Optics - Buy - Sell - Trade section here.

The 4-18 bushnell from GAP has FFP and a zero stop with arguably one of the best Tree reticles ever the G2. All for $800 with a multi tool thrown in for free.
All the above will serve you well. Doug has a good reputation for helping hide folks match up with good optics. For that price range I wouldn't be surprised if he mentions the Athlon Ares BTR. I would also toss out the MIDAS Tac line to save some money for ammo. My last recommendation would be the NF SHV 4x14x56. I have had tremendous success out to 1k, easy target acquisition, tank of a scope....
The folks here will all give you solid advice but don't discount looking through some of them at local shops (Cabela's or Bass pro) before you order one from where ever...your eyes will tell you what looks best and works best for you

Bushnell, Sightron, Sig, SWFA, Vortex, Athlon all would be good choices! I'm partial to Bushnell Tactical Elite, HDMR, XRS... Mil FFP scope with G2 or G3 reticle are easy to read and not too busy. There's a XRS 4.5-30 up here for sale and plenty of other good scopes up here for sale... Good luck with the hunt
IMO, the Athlon's do give a great deal of scope and quality for the money compared to other brands. The Ares BTR, The Midas TAC and the Ares ETR are all great scopes priced well below what the competition offers.

?Ease up on our virgin.... We're trying to get to 1K yds here--on a budget. Let him get a taste, once that happens, he will turn into an addict like the rest of us that needs multiple multi-cal rifles topped with tier one optics and supporting equipment.
OP...u got some great suggestions already, find your preference and buy!! When u finally find yourself smelling the burnt powder from your spent brass casing or when you lose a whole night's sleep due to night sweats thinking about possible releases at next year's shot show-- Then take TheGerman's advice ?
I don't care what scope you buy. But you have to get over the no preference mil or moa thing or forget about it. It's like an engineer saying he can build you anything and it doesn't matter if its metric or standard. I agree with that in theory but not in essence. For example there is very few diversified perfectionists.
