Aero Precision 20" SS fluted 223 Wylde or Wilson 20" SS fluted barrel-which is better?

I have just discovered the barrel contour in my SA Saint is wrong. The barrel experts say heavy at the chamber area then reduce the diameter to the gas block and another small diameter reduction forward to the muzzle. They say the big explosion and most of the heat is just forward of the where the bullet lies in the chamber. Therefore put lots of metal there for safety and better heat dissipation. My saint barrel is backassward. I am asking for input on two barrels. Aero Precision 20" heavy fluted 223 Wylde chambered which weighs 35oz and the Wilson 20" lightly fluted SS barrel that weighs 52 oz. Some say that Ballistic Advantage makes AP's barrels. Some say Wilson makes their own barrels. I only am interested in any one who has experience with one or both of these barrels.

I'm curious and have to ask: is there a reason that you shoot for groups at 25yds? Do you shoot further than that or is that all you have access to?

Only reason for asking is if short range (say less than 50yds-100yds) is all you shoot, then I don't think you have a problem.

The 223 Wylde AP barrels I've had have shot pretty well (.6-.9moa) regularly at 100yds and 1moa out past 500. A friend's Wilson also shot very well (.5-1moa) So if extending your precision range, I'm sure both would perform well. So it comes down to budget and preference. I'm sure either company will satisfy your needs.

Thank you for the information. Living in Orange County, CA means I have to go at least 105 miles round trip to an outdoor range which is in anther county. The indoor range is 13 miles round trip. I have not shot the AR beyond 25 yards yet. Yes, budget is a concern. The AP barrel has as much accuracy as I need. What length was your 223 Wydle AP barrel? Will a 20 inch barrel get me out to 600yds?

I doubt there’s really a problem with your factory barrel contour that’s affecting your accuracy. What ammo are you shooting? What kind of optic/sights? Off a bench rest?

I think you’d be good to try shooting it at 100 with quality ammo once and see where you’re at before going and changing the barrel.

Are you looking at Wilson Combat barrels or Wilson Arms? 2 different companies. You can typically get Wilson Arms barrels pretty economically from JSE Surplus.

Are you just talking 223? I have a Wilson 20” fluted in 300 hamr and aero in 308. Both are dead on but if your talking about the Wylde then I’m of no help.

Personally, I would swap anything until you can get past 100yds. Groups are too small to show dispersion meaningfully at 25yds.

I'd try other ammo before considering swapping.

My barrel was 18" and even a 14.5" will get you past 600... It's not the barrel but the bullet BC & velocity that let you shoot distance. But if you are a novice shooter, anything past ~400 with a 223 starts to become difficult because of wind and precision means little if you aren't good are wind calls.

I'd spend the $300+ you are looking at for barrel upgrade on gas, ammo and range trip to longer range for practice before changing anything.

You’ll notice if you start reloading your own rifle loads it can make a huge difference. You can really dial in what the barrel likes. What are you shooting with the Wylde? 55 grain fmj?

I did all those on an RCBS rock crusher. 300 Ham’r. 600 rounds.

Wilson, all day, every day, not even a close decision.............via White Oak Armament (WOA). It will be chambered correctly & crowned correctly & hand lapped.

You might get lucky with a Aero, but your odds of getting one equal to what you would get from WOA are slim & none.
