I know you gentleman get this rookie question quite often so I will try to be as detailed as possible now that my eyes have crossed looking at scopes.

I just ordered a new in box CZ 455 Varmint thumbhole with the 20.5" fluted barrel as my first real precision/accurate .22LR. It will be mostly used to shoot small 100 yard targets, but I also would like to push the limits as I find places with 200-300 yard ranges. A secondary consideration would be to learn proper techniques that I can then apply to shooting a 1941 Remington 720 in 30-06 that I am rehab'n. As for conditions, I generally only shot during the day into dusk. That being said, I do live in western WA so grey/over cast days are the norm.

For a bit of back ground I've used a nikon 4.5-14x40 bdc with parallax (love the parallax option) on my M1A, a nikon 3-9x40 bdc on a savage .308 bolt gun, and have used my brothers 3-9x40 22mag bdc scope from cabelas on a marlin 795 thumbhole. The Marlin combo works very well with one major complaint, I never feel like I have enough zoom to see where the rounds are hitting at 100 yards. All three scopes give me plenty of clarity on target, with the 4.5-14x40 forcing me to snuggle up to the eyepiece a bit. I really do not like the nikon bdc reticle, the simple cabela's bdc with fine lines is prefered over those damn circles. Also First focal plain is also not needed.

Having said that I get the feeling that a 6-24x X power scope with side parallax might be my best bet to have a decent field of view at short ranges w/ low zoom, yet still be able to zoom in to see where I'm hitting at 100+ yards. To make this even more difficult, $300 is the max I'd like to spend.

One thing I am concerned with is if the objective lens is 50mm or so do I run the possibility of screwing up my scope to eye to check weld geometry by probably needing high rings to keep the scope off the barrel?

Thank you in advance for your opinions.... Nelson

Athlon Talos BTR ffp 4-14 with a tree reticle would be right in that ballpark. It will be the next scope on my truck gun.

Either this or the Athlon Midas TAC would be perfect for you. It would be our pleasure to assist you choosing the correct scope. Please give us a call, 516-217-1000, and of course mention SH :)

I just put a Leupold VX Freedom 3-9x40 on my sons .243 and he and I are are very happy with it. I was able to pick it up last week during a sale at Academy for $178.00. It is sighted in and ready to go. You may still be able to find a good deal on an extended "Cyber" week sale

For a 22 at 100 yards I would want a minimum of 20x for your price range I would try to find a vortex viper hs in the 6.5-20. Great scope, great glass, and awesome customer service and warranty! Cant go wrong with vortex

Sorry guys but the ffp and midas are out of my price range. The 6.5-20 viper is a possibility if I find a used one. But the Argos 4-20x50 sfp is very temping and I also found a used monarch 5-20x44 locally to. Originally I was thinking the talos 6-24x50 but I'm not sure the eye releaf is enough where the argos is supposed to have more.

On a different note the rifle showed up and I like the way it feels!

If 300 is the max and you want second focal plane the 2-15 midas is only listed at 250. Calling Doug of CameralandNY may do even better, not sure as its already really discounted from normal pricing. The 4.5-27 is 340 and over your range as listed but maybe he would do a deal on that as well, no telling until you call him up and ask about the hide.

I have had both the talos btr 4.5-14 (300 normal, call doug on the phone for hide pricing) on the target 22 for awhile before moving up to the 4.5-27 midas btr on it now this past season just for a bit more zoom and so I could use the 4.5-14 for another toy.
My friend has the argos btr and while its nice I like these two above options just as much if not more since youre wanting second focal.
