I know you gentleman get this rookie question quite often so I will try to be as detailed as possible now that my eyes have crossed looking at scopes.
I just ordered a new in box CZ 455 Varmint thumbhole with the 20.5" fluted barrel as my first real precision/accurate .22LR. It will be mostly used to shoot small 100 yard targets, but I also would like to push the limits as I find places with 200-300 yard ranges. A secondary consideration would be to learn proper techniques that I can then apply to shooting a 1941 Remington 720 in 30-06 that I am rehab'n. As for conditions, I generally only shot during the day into dusk. That being said, I do live in western WA so grey/over cast days are the norm.
For a bit of back ground I've used a nikon 4.5-14x40 bdc with parallax (love the parallax option) on my M1A, a nikon 3-9x40 bdc on a savage .308 bolt gun, and have used my brothers 3-9x40 22mag bdc scope from cabelas on a marlin 795 thumbhole. The Marlin combo works very well with one major complaint, I never feel like I have enough zoom to see where the rounds are hitting at 100 yards. All three scopes give me plenty of clarity on target, with the 4.5-14x40 forcing me to snuggle up to the eyepiece a bit. I really do not like the nikon bdc reticle, the simple cabela's bdc with fine lines is prefered over those damn circles. Also First focal plain is also not needed.
Having said that I get the feeling that a 6-24x X power scope with side parallax might be my best bet to have a decent field of view at short ranges w/ low zoom, yet still be able to zoom in to see where I'm hitting at 100+ yards. To make this even more difficult, $300 is the max I'd like to spend.
One thing I am concerned with is if the objective lens is 50mm or so do I run the possibility of screwing up my scope to eye to check weld geometry by probably needing high rings to keep the scope off the barrel?
Thank you in advance for your opinions.... Nelson
