Hi,

Seeking Help

So the wife and I am in the beginning planning phase of a 2 month adventure camping trip for summer of 2020.
We will be travelling self contained and would prefer to camp as close to water (rivers and lakes because oceans suck lol).
Anyone have any location/route suggestions to get the best locations for our time?
Please limit to North America locations/routes only.

My undergrad is in geology and the department head who has traveled the world always spoke very highly of the Grand Tetons. Supposedly it’s incredible views with a whole lot less people than the surrounding National Parks. If you give me an idea of where you are starting/heading I’d be happy to suggest some more.

Should you find yourself in Wyoming, there's some nice camping on BLM along the Powder river about 40 miles east of Buffalo. There is easy access to Powder river Rd. from the interstate and if you travel North you will find lots of options for a site, I do recommend OnX huntmaps to keep you on BLM but there's a ton of places to camp.

If you find yourself in Northwest Pennsylvania, there is a great camping spot on Queen Rd. along East Hickory Creek in Endeavor. This is just off PA-62 north of Tionesta, PA

The wife and I are traveling to the Grand Tetons this year as well. Staying around Cody, Jackson, Green River, Sheridan. We do a ton of hiking so this works. Good luck in your travels!!

Nah, Wyoming sucks. The Tetons are an optical illusion, and we hate guns. Yellowstone is a myth, there are not over a hundred random geysers throughout the caldera, we do not have world class trout fishing on the Platte river. We don’t have the worlds largest hot springs in Thermopolis with public pools surrounded by a self guided wild buffalo tour. We also do not have the Popo Agie river that disappears in a side of a canyon wall only to reappear half a mile down the canyon on the other side. There is not a Periodic Springs where water comes out of the side of a mountain filling a small creek, only to completely stop flow for a bit where it resumes again. We definitely don’t have a river that splits in two where one side flows down the western Continental Divide and the other goes east. We don’t have Elk, Mule deer, White tail deer, mountain sheep, mountain goats or Buffalo. Definitely won’t see the Black Footed Ferret. We don’t have grass feed angus in our steakhouses and we don’t have Thunderbeast making the best damn suppressors in the galaxy. Did I mention we also hate guns? So take your little caravan to Kansas, they have great mountain climbing there.

Pacific Crest Trail in the Sierras.
Start around Kennedy Meadows and head north.
More of a hiking/camping version but the scenery will be hard to best.

If I were starting from Houston I’d probably stick to a north westerly course. Loads of Parks and camping. I was lucky enough to spend a whole summer in the Oregon/Washington area as a child and if you can make it I highly recommend it. Check the Thunder Ranch schedule and see if you can work in a 3 day stay with Clint Smith.

There's quite a number of places I'd suggest in Canada, if you were going to be traveling "North". You did say "North America", but I don't know what you're 'lines in the sand' are.

He spends a lot of time traveling to “stans” so Canuckastan for a pleasure trip is ......... questionable to say the least. ??

Hardest part I can see of going up there Sean, is having to find a place to store your “security” before you cross and pick it up when you come back.

I can make some fine suggestions for places to see aling a nice road trip. Took a ton of them all around the west when I was a kid, camping almost always.
I will do it from a computer though, mobile right now.

We intend to kayak, bike and hike but will need to make it back to base station at end of day. I do not think I get talk wife into backpack camping...

Fitness levels are between obstacle course runner and ultra marathon runner.

My lines in sand are pretty wide lol....was just looking at turquoise lake in Alberta But would require my temporary export/import approval (Which I see no problem) for certain items.

The Banff and Jasper area are worth looking over for sure.

Bighorns. Camp at Tensleep lake, hike up to Mistymoon lake or even Bomber Mountain based on your fitness. There is a B-17 Flying fortress there. Cloud peak if you are daring. You can range from 15-30 miles round trip based on objective. Most camp for a cloud peak summit.

Lies. Wyoming doesn’t look like that. It looks just like N Dakota. Nothing good in Wyoming at all.

Well, when it comes to B.C; I've been all through (pretty much) the whole province a number of times. There's only a few areas I haven't been to. Point is, it is my own useless opinion that the Chilcotin's are the most beautiful area in the province. Followed by a close second (tie) of the Kooteney's and the Muskwa/Ketchika areas.

But hey, everyone's entitled to their own ridiculous opinion, eh? ;D And no, I've never once been 'glamping'. Vast majority of all that was tenting, with some simply 'under the stars'.....

8 1/2' camper when ice-fishing though, many moons ago.

Too bad you don't like the Ocean......The West Coast, above the SF Bay Area is where I'd start. I'd go all the way through NorCal, through Oregon and Washington and catch the ferry from Port Angeles to Sydney/Vancouver Island. Then, on up to Parksville, take a left to Port Alberni, Ucluelet and Tofino for the Pacific side tour. It really is stunning.

If you want to avoid sleeping in a tent but still want to see some beautiful back country... 10th Mountain Division Huts. I've done this a few times and they are fantastic,

IF you come through Colorado, I would recommend the Zirkel Widerness up north for hiking. There are some “day” trails in there that won’t disappoint you, and plenty of areas to park/camp your rig in the area. There are also a lot of white water adventures, however I’m not the one to comment on that.
