Ruger Precision Rifle Discussion

I have been using Prime 6.5CM and been happy, I heard they are in a dispute with a supplier and have been out of stock for a while. I am looking for factory ammo suggestion to load up on here in CA ahead of the upcoming law changes.

What factory ammo have you all had good luck target/long range(no hunting) that I should shift to?

I’ll second Hornady Match is a good factory ammo. I shot it before I reloaded. Good results.

It looks like you can use an MDT Skeleton Rifle Stock v5 on a short action RPR, with a caveat. This did require some simple modification to the bolt.

Duplicate this at your own risk!

IMG_3593.jpg

We know that the RPR bolt extends into the buffer tube. While the MDT stock does have a mini buffer tube it's not long enough to accept the bolt. The bolt has a tang off the back. As best as I could determine, this tang only serves as a cocking indicator. I chose to trim down the length of this tang.

IMG_3574.jpgIMG_3577.jpgIMG_3579.jpg

Once trimmed down the bolt could move far enough back into the mini buffer tube to pick up rounds out of the magazine. I didn't like the idea of the exposed cocking piece, especially with the removal of the elongated bolt shroud meaning it's more exposed than before. Since the bolt is the same as a Ruger American Bolt I purchased a bolt shroud for one of those. The one I bought was from Anarchy Outdoors ( Ruger American Replacement Shroud ). The new shroud fits in the receiver. The bolt can move back far enough with the shroud but my shroud impacts the bolt used to connect the stock to the mini buffer tube. Thus far it's not an issue, if anything I may shave down the area on the shroud where it impacts if I need some extra clearance, though I don't expect to need to do so.

IMG_3584.jpgIMG_3583.jpg

I've tested this so far with an MDT metal magazine. There is some excess room behind the rounds which should help ensure the reliability of the bolt being able to catch the rounds.

So far I've run the rifle this way during a range day and during a local match. I never ran into any problems with the setup.

Reasons for doing this:
  1. Looks good
  2. Much greater adjustability
  3. It's an option other than a Magpul PRS stock
  4. Allows for the addition of metal weight in stock if you're looking for that option
  5. It's a fairly unique modification
Reasons why you may not want to do this:
  1. It requires modification of the bolt (I used a knock off dremel tool with a cutting wheel)
  2. It leaves the bolt track in the receiver open
  3. Its not light weight
  4. It involves removing the stock bolt shroud and the tools contained there in
  5. The black color/shine of the stock and rifle do not match perfectly, though it's not all that noticeable

Overall I'm happy with how it's turned out so far. Let me know if you have any questions.

Interesting range find. Went out the other day with the RPR shooting my 190 SMK’s over 42.5 gr Varget. Varget is recommended to be used between 25* and 140*. It was 21* when I went out. Never shot it in cold like that. My cold bore is always a tad low. But this day it was about 5” low at 100! Definitely surprised me. Rifle was dead on after that.

Finally got my Hawk Hill pre-fit Barrel on and got to the range to break it in. Got to say I’m impressed. Shot several 5 round sub 1/2 moa groups at 100. Below is just a 3 shot group, no POI shift when I put my supressor on but groups loosened up. Pretty cold and miserable today so maybe it was just me.

What mags are you 6.5 CM shooters running? Had some feeding issues with the Magpul AC 5 mags. Like my pervious post just switched over to 6.5 from 308. Shooting lapua brass and 140 gr eldm. 2.82” over all length.

I run the magpul aics mags without a problem. I also have +2 extensions on them so the spring tension is different so not sure if that matters. There both 10 round mags. Haven’t messed with the 5 rounders.

I run the magpuls still; but Accurate mags alpha mags, magpul aics and the AI mags all work great.

RPR 6 Creedmoor range report. I have been shooting groups at 200 yards at my backyard range.
The Hornady 108 ELDM are dropping in at 1” five shot groups at 200 yds. Not to happy but think that some tweaking would reduce the group size.
I went to Whitaker’s and picked up some Berger 105 VLD target.
The same load 40.0 H4350, WLR primers and the Berger 105 reduced the 200 yard group down to 1/2” for five shots. I’m tickled with that.
So today I loaded up three rounds same load except I seated the bullet to 2.782 COAL.
I loaded up another three with same load and seated the bullet at 2.809.
I shot the 2.782 COAL into the group on the right. Turned the scope down two clicks and then fired the group on the left. The 2.809 is the group on the left. This target was at 100 yards as I’m dialing my scope in for a match this Sunday.
My rifle likes these Berger 105’s.

Didn't have any luck with the eldm either. Sure looks good. Never tried the Berger's

My 6mm RPR likes the Berger 105 Hybrids best too.

Anyone seen any new forends with the ARCA Swiss rail built in, besides the one that was posted earlier? I'm hoping the Ruger will come out one, since They have one on there Magnum models.

Fellow RPR shooters,

I want to start a movement.

For far too long the RPR has been looked at as lesser than other rifles. Inferior to rifles with names like Vector, Deviant, Spectre, and Scalpel. While those rifles have cool names, our’s has a name that is just a description of what it is, it’s Ruger’s Precision Rifle.

The time has come to create a new name and claim the coolness that it deserves. In the vain of modern names like Tumblr and Grindr I think we should look at the name RPR as just missing a couple vowels.

And so, I present to you….. The ReaPeR! (capitalization for emphasis)

You may ask yourself why am I doing this. Well it’s because I’m bored. Is this a stupid idea? Yes. Is it meaningless? Sure. Is it idiotic? Uh huh. Have you waisted your time reading this? Absolutely.

There is only one questions left. Will you join me on this quest to claim coolness for the rifle that we love?

Who’s with me?!

:p
you might find some people with the higher priced guns, @ the PRS matches, calling it the "Sleepler" when you keep shooting groups like 2.75 @ 600 yards with a total setup that cost less then they spent on their scope and rings.

So just did a barrel swap, I have a LRI 308 barrel with 704 rounds on it. Bought the rifle from a friend switched it over to a 6.5 barrel. Going to post it in the PX just curious what do you all think is a fair listing price? I have a bore scope so when I list it I will have pics of the throat, etc...

I just saw that Savage is putting one on their new AR10 Precision rifle. I think it is 18" long. Maybe they will be offering it as an aftermarket part.

I’ve got my first match this weekend. I have held off on buying all of these do dads until I got a couple of matches under my belt. There is one thing I will change, alter or manufacture is my round forearm. I’m actually thinking about bolting a piece of flat stock or a strip of aluminum to the bottom of the forearm . I’ve been practicing a lot and noticed how the forearm is wanting to roll on the Game Changer.
I can fab a piece of flat stock for next to nothing.

@Netman8718 something to consider while you're looking at your forend: I did my first match this weekend and noticed that the length of my forearm was at times an issue. I have a seekins 15 inch rail so it has a flat bottom. The problem I ran into was that having my bipod at the end of the rail often made the rifle a lot longer than the obstacles I was shooting off of. So as your looking at your forend you might want to consider ways to mount a bipod farther back like a second sling swivel adapter farther back.

To solve both of those issues.....Mount a dovetail/arca rail on your forend. It’ll not only give you a flat surface but then you can get a RRS or area 419 adapter for your bipod and have it anywhere along your fore end in seconds. I have the Area 419 rail on mine. Huge difference for shooting matches!

Got a new in box RPR in .300 WM yesterday. Magazines won't fit in the rifle. Called Ruger. Send it back they said. All of it. Apparently no QC. Since I have nothing to compare to not sure if it's the magazines or the magazine well. Why would they send out rifles and magazines that don't work? Person on the phone was nice but sounded like she was reading from the little "handbook of explanations and excuses" they are issued.

Did you have the bolt in when you were trying the mags?

I have same issue with my RPR 223, looks like the front lip of the mag is touching the bottom of the feedramp.

I will post some pics later.

When I got mine out of the box when the Gen 1 first came out, the PMAGS were a little tight going in, but I watched the Ruger sponsored RPR disassembly video, took the "lower" off, put it back on, magazines fit fine after that.

I had the same problem with my 300WM magazines not fitting. They were .002-.004 too wide for the mag well. Ruger wanted me to send the entire rifle back. This beast is shooting 0.5 MOA,I am not sending it back. I gently removed .003-.004 from the side corners of the mag and they fit fine now. I don't know how this made it passed QC. I still love this rifle.

My magazines won't come close to fitting unless I completely loosen the front receiver screw and allow the two halves to seperate a bit. They said they would pay shipping so I plan to send it back. I don't want to modify magazines because if I want extras, I want them to fit. Thanks for the replies.

Gotcha, so it sounds like possibly out of spec lower receiver issue. I would probably send it back with your magazines so they can see what the issue is, cuz if you modify the mags who's to say you want different mags down the road and you would probably run into the fitment issue again on different mags. Sucks having issues with a brand new rifle but ruger should take good care of ya and get it fixed properly. I've had no complaints from their customer service.

I’m shooting the load of Berger 105 VLD Target, 40.0 grains H4350, WLR primer, Hornady brass. Two days ago I shot a three shot group at 400 yards that was under a inch. Today I shot another three shot group that was just under a inch. Using the BallisticsARC app I guessed the FPS to be 2950. My group was about three inches low of the bullseye.
So I borrowed my buddy’s chronograph. Boy was that disappointing. It showed my average was or what I thought was the average of 2833 but I could see some rounds were 29xx down to 2790 but before I could see the SD numbers I shot the Chrony center mass and sent parts all over my backyard. So I’m not sure if 2833 was the average.
So I plugged in the 2833 in BallisticsARC. I shot the 400 yd target and it was centered up.
I have tried higher powder charges and my groups opened up. I’m suspecting the WLR primers might be part of the problem too.
It’s confusing to why this rifle is shooting so good with the SD all wonky. The Chrony is old so it might have been out before I snuffed it out.

Don’t always chase numbers. If it shoots well then it shoots well. Especially a good group at distance.

^ Agreed. I’ve actually never owned a chronograph. I don’t compete or anything either. So 1/2 moa at 100 - 600 with a ballparked velocity from app that’s good enough for 1000 is good enough for me.

So today was my first local precision shooting match with the RPR. I was squadded up with some really great guys. I told everyone that this was my first match not looking for sympathy but ways to perform better. When I got done with each stage guys who were spotting told me where my misses were going which helps me better understand what was going on correctly and incorrectly.
Some of my mental notes.
My rifle shot really good with my reloads. When my crosshairs were on the target at the trigger break I heard IMPACT. When it was not I heard nothing. Prior to the match I was told “ a few good solid hits is better than ten quick misses”. It was amazing how fast the time went on each stage. I only had one stage where I got all of my shots off. Most stages I had three to five live rounds in the magazine.
Outside of more training and practice I have only one thing equipment wise I need to change. The change needs to be with the trigger pull. I have the stock trigger turned down as light as it will go however it’s not light enough. Not sure what poundage it is but needs to be waaay lighter.
The range is limited to 550 yards and we shot out to five something today. My RPR did very good at that range .
I left not feeling I was undergunned. I left feeling very good about my RPR 6 Creedmoor, my reloads, my Vortex scope and my Game Changer.
When I was on I was on ,when not I was not.
Now more practice!

Pull the adjustment spring out and clip a few coils off it.

This shows how to R&R the trigger spring. It shows the adjustment.

Make sure you get some high quality grease and lube up the contact points.

On the subject of trigger mods has anyone used the trigger shoe that is offered by Anarchy Outdoors. It is a bit pricey, but gives a wider trigger and eliminates [covers] the blade.
I have taken a brass tube from a pen, cut it to about 1/4 inch and wedged it behind the face of the trigger to capture the blade safety. If the bolt is not vigorously manipulated sometimes the trigger does not reset.
Removed the adjustment screw spring sometime ago. Have not done any test for drop safety in this configuration.
Rather than being essentially a two stage trigger before it is now a single stage with just a hint of creep before release at 14 oz. to 1 lb.
Has anyone taken the trigger module apart to see if it would benefit from some stoning of the sear engagement?

I have a Gen1 and the stock trigger was really good but it the lowest it would go was just over 2lbs. Once I clipped the spring and got it down to 1lb I was happy.

My friend has a Gen2 and his trigger is still stock. His has a crisper break than mine so I am curious how it would be with a clipped spring.

Due to production tolerances I think the trigger feel is going to vary. Shooter experience is going to come into play too.

Hi to everyone I'm new to the long range precision rifle game I got my Ruger rpr over a year ago and just started really getting into shooting it and here is my first really decent group out of 80 rounds I have fired through it of Hornady Factory match ELD M on 140 s . I know I need a lot of practice but it's a start.

MJC, I'm not shy about modifying my new firearms. If it were mine, I'd lightly spray all sides of the magazine with a cheap flat white and not wait for full drying and work it in and out of the mag well till I can see where it is hanging up. I'd then mask the areas inside the mag well and action as best possible to keep dust out while sanding down the offending areas with emery cloth wrapped around a short piece of wood trim. Blow out the dust, retry the fit and repeat as necessary. I'd use a graphite dry spray lube from a farm and ranch store to refinish the inside of the well. When all done, clean the daylights out of the whole weapon. I agree with the post that recommended not modifying the magazines for the reason stated.

So on my RPR 308, I put a gen 3 PRS on it for a while. I hate it. I’m 6’ tall, and have semi gorilla arms. That stock is stupid long, and fine on a bench. Hunting or shooting from an off position, it sucks for me.

Call me stupid if you want, but my results are plenty satisfactory. But I put a Magpul fixed carbine stock on it, and and extended Warne mount. It makes the gun plenty handy to shoot, in places other than just a bench.

I heard a lot of people with the same gripe about the lop from the gen 3. Most ended up selling and going to a gen 2 that had a little less lop. I’m kind of built the same way and decided to keep my factory buttstock due to the amount of adjustment I can get out of it. I just can’t have a beard haha.
