Strange twist rate?

Hello everyone,

I inherited a Remminton 700 BDL from the 80s in .308 and it has had some good work done to it. Everything looks good to go, but I can’t figure out the barrel. It’s definitely a custom heavy profile, but it has no markings indicating who made it and the twist rate is 1:15. Has anyone seen a .308 with that slow of a twist or know what this was set up for? Thanks!

According to Hodgdon, the Barnes 110 fb can be pushed to 3250 in a 24” barrel. When run through Ballistic, it would get to 1000yds going 1190 FPS, and take roughly 8.4 mils to do it. I didn’t put much effort into that, but 8.4 mile seems awful flat to me considering it’s got a .284 G1.

I recommend you get some 110 gr Varmint bullets and blow up some furry things with them.

Right on...thanks for the info! I will mess around with some different loads and see what she does. Varmint beware.

Long day yesterday and knew it seemed off, but wasn’t willing to look at why.

Never seen a 308 with a twist slower than 1-13. Not saying they are not out there. I would check the twist rate just to make sure it’s correct. Take all references for proper twist rates with a grain of salt. A lot of “justifying the purchase” in the rifle world. I have 308s in 1-12, 1-10, 1-8, and soon a 1-7 for an experiment. So far I’ve found none of the original arguments about fast twist to hold all the water that’s repeated. This is the reason for the 1-7 experiment.
Have fun with it and experiment! Really interested in your experience with this twist once you double check it. I would further suggest testing with some FGMM in various weights. Please keep us updated as you progress.

Sounds like it was set up to compete with the 30BR or 30x47 just has a little more horse power and a little faster twist.
I think the preferred twist in the 30BR is 1-17" running 120-125 grain bullets in the 3000fps range from a 21" barrel.
Pretty damn efficient giving it's small case volume.
You may be able to run bullets in the 135 grain match king class with it pretty effectively.
