Best Caliber for PRS for Rem 700 Long Action Mag FED AICS (300win conversion choices)

Hi,

I searched the threads and could not find what I am looking for, I was leaning towards 6.5 x 284? Any 6.5 wildcats OK with me too.

6.5 PRC or the 6.5x284 Norma would also be nice, but you might have to do something to he bolthead as there is a slight difference in case head diameter.

Thanks, Sarge, I keep forgetting the bolt face, it looks like 264 win mag would be easy, but I wanted a non-belted round.

6.5 SAUM loaded long. Honestly, though, I'd suggest getting a different action - either by trading/selling your current one, or saving up for a second one.

300 prc should be easy enough. May require magazine modifications depending on how long you load (or buy) them.

A new bolt isn't the worst thing in the world either, 284 and 6.5-284 are both great.

I'm a big GAP Tempest fan. I've been running one since early 2016 (bought the action late 15), and I'm several barrels deep on it without problems. It's fast, boringly reliable, and feeds like a dream from AW mags.

300PRC for PRS? Maybe for a dedicated ELR match, but there's no way I'd want to use one for normal PRS matches.

Recoil mitigation is a big part of the game, and with a long action your options for a low-recoil cartridge are, shall we say, limited.

Short actions pretty much rule the roost because of recoil, and the revelation that 6-6.5mm was a sweet spot bullet-wise.

You should have said that earlier. 300PRC would be a valid option, as would a 6.5 SAUM loaded long - and either one will work in your LA. I'd say it depends on your max expected distance for which is better - out to 1700 or so, the SAUM will do just fine (especially at altitude). if you plan to shoot 2k or more, then the 300PRC.

Norma is already falling by the wayside from what I have seen. Short barrel life and finicky to tune have been the biggest complaints I have heard. Personally, I am planning to build a 300PRC as a dedicated belly/bench ELR rig for fun, and keep my SAUM as my PRS-style ELR rig.

Thanks for the info I live in MI so no ELR Matches nearby so 300PRC sounds like a good option. I've been watching articles on it I think I'll do that for my new long action build, have to finish my open build 1st, lol, its only money...

I'm faced with making the same decision before end-of-year. I have a 300WM that I like lots but is nearing end of functional barrel life. I'm planning (probably 90% sure) to go 300PRC as it's a more modern cartridge design, uses the same bolt face as 300WM, and as much as I'd like to set up to 338, I have several 30 cal cans that I can employ on my ELR rig.

Currently it’s a tuned up R700. I’m probably going to order an ARC long action to match my ARC Nucleus short action.

I am using a Bighorn for my open build, waiting on the action. I like the idea of buying tools and changing my own barrels. Waiting for a barrel change takes forever.

I jumped on the straight 284 train several years ago, it's a great round in a LA. I'd do either it or a 284 Shehane. My 284 will launch the 180 hybrids well into the mid 2850s.

30 Nosler would give you better(more) brass options(ADG) and a little more powder capacity than the prc
