LANCASTER, N.H. — Investigators issued a plea Saturday for the public to come forward with information as they try to determine what caused a pickup truck hauling a trailer to collide with a group of 10 motorcycles on a rural highway, killing seven bikers and leaving their community reeling.
Authorities identified the pickup driver as Volodoymyr Zhukovskyy, 23, an employee of a Springfield, Massachusetts, company called Westfield Transport.
Zhukovskyy survived the accident and has not been charged, authorities said, but they didn’t release details on his condition or his whereabouts. A phone listing for him couldn’t be found.
Someone who answered the phone at a listing for Westfield Transport on Saturday and declined to give a name said the company is cooperating with the investigation.
The National Transportation Safety Board is among the agencies investigating. Authorities said they’re asking for the public’s help in the form of videos, photos or other information about the accident or the vehicles involved.
“This is one of the worst tragic incidents that we have investigated here in the state,” New Hampshire State Police Col. Chris Wagner said at a Saturday news conference in Lancaster. “It’s going to be a very lengthy investigation.”
A 2016 Dodge 2500 pickup truck towing a flatbed trailer of the kind used to haul cars collided with the riders around 6:30 p.m. Friday on U.S. 2, a two-lane highway in nearby Randolph, police said. Randolph is about a two-hour drive north of Concord, the capital, and a three-hour drive from Boston.
Along with the seven dead, state police said three additional people were taken to hospitals. Two of them were released Saturday. Police did not provide names.

The crash sent shockwaves through New England’s community of motorcycle enthusiasts and military veterans, which sometimes overlap. The crash involved members of Marine JarHeads MC, a motorcycle club in New England that includes Marines and their spouses.
“When something like this happens, we all feel it,” said Cat Wilson, who organizes a motorcycle charity event in Massachusetts and is a friend of some of the crash victims. “There is no tighter community than our biker community.”
The road reopened Saturday, and skid marks were still visible on the road, which has mountains and fields as a backdrop. A patch of burned grass remained.
Bill Brown, a 73-year-old military veteran and motorcyclist, arrived at the scene near a gentle curve in the road to plant flags, calling the victims “brothers in arms” and vowing to keep riding.
Members of the motorcycle community are already organizing help for the victims’ families, Wilson said. A memorial in nearby Berlin was planned for Saturday evening.
The pickup truck was on fire when emergency crews arrived. Witnesses described a “devastating” scene as bystanders tried to help riders lying in the road.
A photo posted by WMUR-TV showed motorcycles and wreckage scattered across the highway and a truck on the shoulder in flames.
The crash created a chaotic scene in the town of about 300 people.
“There was debris everywhere,” said Miranda Thompson, 21, of Manchester, who was several cars back and recalled seeing a truck in flames on the side of the highway and six motorcycles.
“People were in the grass,” she said. “There were people putting tourniquets on people, trying to make sure they didn’t move.”

Slave russian labor illegally imported killled these marines.

Looking into details
Yup. The road pirates are driving all the U.S. Truck drivers away.

No one wants to be pulled over and fucked with with zero probable cause. The citizens seek other means of employment and foreign labor fills the void.

The greatest generation or whoever let .gov get rid of the 4th in regards to any vehicle 3/4 ton or over is a bunch of statist pussies.

RIP Marines.

I had a Ukrainian truck driver deliver a 963 in the middle of a snow storm. 6+" snow and more steady falling. Anyone with half a brain would have parked for a while. I can't blame them for coming here to work but foreign drivers are worse than US drivers

Thats an-individual choice, i ride 35k per year on avg.

The government killed these Marines.

Agreed it is your choice... Not stating otherwise....7 people are still dead regardless of who is at fault

My first years of driving was on 2 wheels around Houston. Most of the time when someone almost killed me it was a woman driver. This is no way to loose soldiers. Especially while inching closer to a civil war.

Read a report that at the time of the crash the trucker would have been driving direct into the sun and the glare would make bikes, road, the world tough for anyone to view.

Not familiar with the area that story was from a local commentator that said they rode the road next day same time and couldnt see crap.

Is it worth it? I gave up riding after the 2nd time I was almost hit.

Everyone should have to ride two wheels for the first two years they hold a license.

The sense of vulnerability, respect for traffic patterns/laws and defensive driving skills attained are worth losing those that Darwin will take as his due when they cant get past that two years.

Learned that shit the first day on my XLCH while riding in the rotary when I had the right of way. I didnt crash or anything but I didnt get my way and I learned right than sometimes its better to not get your right of way and continue in health and safety.

I've ridden for 25yrs and have seen plenty of riders cross the center line in the curves.......I will wait to pass judgement!

One tried to make it across the bay bridge during a CAT IV hurricane. Found him and his tractor at the bottom. Good news though; his load was still on what was left of the bridge.

That's @sirhrmechanic territory. Perhaps he can shed more light on what happened?

Nothing that has not been on the news. Here is some of what has been on the news up here, though:

One is that charges are not being filed against the truck driver (at least not at this point). The truck was a big Ram 2500 towing a three-car-long car trailer with a fifth wheel/goosneck mount. Driver was a 23-or-so-year old with a slavic name. No idea if that is meaningful.... but since no charges are being filed, it sounds like a stretch. The trailer was unloaded/empty, from what the news photos saw. And the truck was well-capable of handling that trailer, unloaded. Lots of those rigs up here, often picking up auction cars or 'junkers' from car lots to take to auction or to flog in urban areas or even move around for eBay auctions. I don't know where the truck/trailer were registered.

The main thing that came into my mind is that New Hampshire is a no-helmet state. And no idea if the riders were wearing their helmets, but I doubt it. Most don't. Could that have contributed to the high death toll? Certainly. Though not necessarily. A helmet does not protect against massive full-body trauma. Speculation on my part re. the helmets. But it's more often than not we see riders with no helmet in NH. It's one of the reasons folks love to ride there! Combine that with a tight riding formation and when something bad happens, the results can be awful. Nowhere for folks to go except into the melee, no matter how skilled their riding.

Also don't know exactly that stretch of road, but there are a lot of winding, two-lane off-camber roads through mountains, hills and notches. All it would take is a single bike getting struck and knocked into a pack to cause horrific damage. Or a truck being 'pushed' by a long trailer across the road on a corner into a pack... and the results are what we saw. But this is speculation. I don't know the road.

The news up here also reported that the stretch of road had a very bad stretch where you were riding or driving 'right into the sun' at certain times of day. And so the driver could have easily been blinded. That is a theory from one of the news stations and they 're-ran' the road yesterday and showed how bad it was.

Overall, a sad, bad situation that right now looks like a tragic accident and one that we can't simply point a finger and say 'he did it' or similar. Just a confluence of events. Maybe that will change.

Last, it was five Marines and two of their wife/GF passengers who were killed. Three more hospitalized.

Cheers,

Sirhr

For what its worth.
My son hit a pickup and broke foot, femur, clavicle and a vertebra in his neck.

He is still recovering but will ultimately walk off.

He did have a good helmet on.

Just s suggestion

The very first news report I read, said he crossed the centerline, over reacted snatching back, and jack-knifed the trailer into the group, which resulted in...

That news report has disappeared. The skid and yaw marks should tell the story to any qualified investigator.

RIP Marines and Riders.

Our local "USMC" MC is actually a satellite club for the Banditos. Not that there is anything wrong with that.

Yeah I think there is.

The 1% clubs can be tough on other independent "Patch Holders".

I think its kind of ghey but the big name 1%ers kind of "threaten" the other clubs with paying tribute or supporting.

Had some friends out western MA that wanted to wear their own colors for a local riding group of friends and they were told by Berkshire HA that unless they supported HA they would get messed with.

I dont understand the whole biker colors thing in that riding is supposed to be about freedom/personal expression and "clubs" want to get all territorial about a patch.

Id hope groups like Leathernecks MC etc would tell them to eat a dick, tell them to their faces not to wear an EGA.

I remember when Vietnam Veterans MC was riding a lot around here (HA affiliated) I had a hard time recognizing any patched member old enough to have been to VN.

Get over yourselves and ride.

A horrific occurrence.

By shear coincidence I grew up with OG Hells Angels in Hayward CA as well as OG Banditos in Bacliff TX that lived in my neighborhood. 1%ers today are not cut from the same cloth. The whole associated MC I think is due to the RICO Act.

Banditos MC
Pretty sure it was them when about 100 bikes pulled up to the rope swing tree at Ray Hubbard lake.

3 of us high school age were swimming there.
One of my buddies said let's scram, I said nope we were there first.
Both my buddies jaws dropped as two of the bikers approached.

They asked if they could join in and use my truck, I told them absolutely!

The rope had been cut and needed a platform to reach and swing into the lake.

Was a great time with booze and half naked girls till le showed up.

The bikers didn't think le should detain me and gathered around. Le rethought thier position an agreed we could all just leave.

Was a bad ass day for a school kid.

Sounds premature as fuck and why it's gone now.

I drive country roads every day at least twice a day on my commute. Based the driving behavior of country people here (jigging left before turning right, aimlessly wandering across the centerline on curves, driving right down the middle of a road with no marked centerline instead of hugging the edge, pulling out in front of 50 - 60 mph traffic and not accelerating, etc) I would not be surprised to find out these people were killed by someone with that same sort of attitude that assumes the road belongs exclusively to him

Fuck had a similar experience as a kid in Galveston County at a gravel pit. They don't bite normal people :)

I've been around clubbers most of my life. Only time I had a problem was when my buddy tried to hit on a chick at their club house.
I should have left his dumbass there!
I didn't but I did see my life flash before my eyes!
All in all they're cool.

You're mostly right here, except for one thing. I've said this a number of times over the years. For the time that 'new drivers' have their Learner's License as well as AT LEAST the first year that they have their Full License, the ONLY thing that they can drive/operate on the roads is a SCOOTER with no more than 50 cc engine.

Then, and only then, will they learn the concept of "traffic/flow/rules/laws/physics/logic/reality/courtesy/and DEFENSIVENESS". If/When everyone has to go through the same thing, then EVERYONE will actually start to look around, pay attention, follow the same set of rules, be on the same page, and progress into the future.

Just think of how many bullshit, stupid, devastating and costly accidents will be reduced if people are FORCED to start thinking.

I know it's a free country and all, but if ANYTHING is going to be forced on anybody, it should be the THINKING process. Way too much 'thought' and 'logic' has been removed from life, and relegated to a 'push of a button'.

Just my 2 cents,,, with a HELL of a lot of severity behind it/them. I have had far too many idiot encounters on the roads, both while on two wheels as well as in cagers. Ya'll know what I'm talking about, as I'm sure you see it too. And point it out, and shake your head, and comment or even laugh at people's stupidity.

I had a lot of time to think about this, laying in the hospital for months. So yeah,,,, it's a nerve. And truly, it's getting worse on the roads.

Murphy's Law was probably at fault in this tragic wreck. Personally, I don't believe in accidents. Shit just happens so live every day prepared for the worse. I've learned this from the Irish.

No matter how this happened, this is a tragedy for all involved. The pickup driver’s life is ruined even if he doesn’t spend time behind bars for this. Yes, he gets to live, but it sounds as if he’s taking it hard, understandably.

No details but PU driver arrested.

Facing 7 counts of negligent homicide.

The crash forensics must have turned up something not pleasant about the situation. Excessive speed or defective equipment. No idea yet. But as someone said above, the skidmarks will tell the story. And if there was excessive speed involved, if the rig was caught on cameras in two places, whatever distance apart, it would not be hard to figure out if he had a higher-than-average speed going on.

Sucks for all involved. Lives can change in an instant.

I made 3 of 4 kids take the msf course. The oldest skipped that and had 3 accidents until i sent him also and no more from there

"Life is inherently risky. There is only one big risk you should avoid at all costs, and that is the risk of doing nothing." -Denis Waitley

Yes, I ride. You spend your life avoiding risk you'll never leave your house (which could burn down with you in it), so yeah, even that has risk...

Yup... or his social media/phone history said he was texting.... Not sure if he gave a blood test at the scene, but in such a situation, I would say he could have been compelled pretty easily. That said, results from those are not overnight things. Usually.

It will be interesting. Regardless, I doubt they charged him for the fun of it or on a fishing expedition. There must be something going on.

Driver has a previous history, a conviction, and "may" be charged with possession in his home state based on what was found in his home during the arrest and search, possibly heroin, source Boston Globe.

Some interesting reading out there, but we will have to just wait and see.
