Greenland has lots of mineral wealth to exploit. Even considering that, I don't see how trying to buy Greenland wouldn't turn into a giant international crap show. Currently Greenland gets about 700 million subsidies from the Danish government.
Greenlanders, like most of Europe has an intense dislike for Trump and the USA. If the USA did manage to convince Denmark to sell, then the citizens of Greenland would probably want to fight for independence at the UN, or whoever else would listen.
That independence would cost them the $700 million per year and probably cripple their economy. If we bought Greenland, we could keep whatever bases and land we want, and tell the Greenlanders to call us about having a more favorable relationship once their economy tanks. So we would wait them out, withholding money until their whole country goes into the crapper (except for the bases we keep). Then we would have to wait until their "national attitude" toward the USA changes.
I can't imagine there is enough mineral wealth in Greenland for us to want to deal with all the hostility of the "natives" and to offset the $700 million subsidy. I think keeping our bases, and keeping things low profile with the Danish government is a far smarter move;
