Hunting & Fishing Hunting scope swfa 10x42? Anyone use for hunting

It was my first time using on on a antelope hunt and i was just seeing feedback on other people hiw like that like and if they kept it or changed

I’ve hunted with fixed 10x scopes in the past. Killed several deer and pigs.

Really preferred having something I could dial down a little bit with.

I just ordered a bushnell 3-12 as a dedicated hunting rifle optic

Any one use for az coues deer hunting?

Not sure but I think you are asking about the Ares 2.5 15 50?

I have not used that specific scope but that is an excellent magnification range for AZ Coues. They keep their distance if they know you are around. The closest I have ever taken one was 103 yards after my dad and I kicked two bucks out of a canyon bottom when moving to a new spot to glass, the longest was 528 yds across a canyon. Most have been between 200-300yds after a round of spot and stalk.

Walk/move with scope on 2.5 for a good field of view for surprises, (anything can and will happen with Coues) and use what magnification you have to look over your target to take something further out. 15x is more then enough to go after the Grey Ghost. They are fun to hunt.

I agree with others who have posted that a fixed 10x scope is a bit much for an optimum hunting scope magnification. Not that you can’t be successful with one but it makes it a bit harder than a 2.5x15 range. For me 5x is about as high as I would go for a low end of a hunting scope. YMMV

HTH

I use one regularly for mountain hunting, it is ideal as an all rounder

Didn’t Carlos Hathcock and the Marine snipers use a fixed 8x or 10x in the jungles of Vietnam?

Can’t be too much of a liability at close range....

Also, Pat Sinclair, scenarshooter over on 24hourcampfire, is a paid predator hunter and he uses the fixed 10x PM II on a lot of his rifles. Pat spends hundreds of days each year in the field and has lots of choices on optics. When I asked him about an all around fixed power scope, he said the 10x PM II or the SWFA if you’re on a budget.

Where i hunt in Co is big open county so long shots atleast 200 for close all the way out to 800 which is fine but going to Az coues disnt know if i needed more or not

What 10 fix is the best glass? Swfa has a hd

IMHO it would be this one - at least for my old tired eyes:)

I have the non-HD SWFA Super Sniper 10X, and like it fine.

I'm of the opinion, might be wrong, that good enough is good enough in glass, and once there, the features of the scope (turrets, repeatability, reticle) drive the decision.

SWFA is good glass for the $$. Magnification is a personal preference. My .02

I have the non hd SS 10x it has been very reliable. I have taken deer to 750yds with it. Most in the 350-550 range. the magnification is user preference but if you use it a lot you will get very comfortable with fixed power. The glass may not be the greatest for spotting and observing in low light situations but I have taken plenty near dark when I was just shooting deer. It is one of my favorites for what it is. The set up I have it on was one of my first and it is my go to for putting meat on the ground most days

Thanks
Buck

A turn of the magnification ring turns a tube machined with helix groves. The rotation of the helix tube makes the zoom lenses (housed in a secondary tube) slide closer or farther from each other (depending on the magnification). This is the only difference in a variable vs fixed. This process has been perfected with CNC machines. The real question is why scope manufacturers still charge ridiculous prices for rifle scopes?

My limited experience is very few fixed or variable scopes are reliable long term.

Some are, most are not.

THIS is a good read that started out about a specific scope, and drifted into a discussion about scopes in general.

Bull. The SWFA fixed 10x is built like a tank. You could literally chop a Vortex PST in half with it and put it back on the rifle and shoot it.

I dropped my .223 SWFA off the bench onto concrete, on a turret. It held zero.

Dropped it on asphalt when, like a dumbass, I picked up my .223 by the suppressor and the cover slipped off in my hand. Fell over again on the turrets. Held zero.

Yes the SWFA 10x is cheap. Glass is adequate, but I’ll always have one for my truck gun.

Same lifetime warranty as anyone else.

You missed my point. I’m all in on the SWFA super sniper line.

My comment was about other brands.

I have a 6x super sniper that will probably outlive the cockroaches at the end of time....

I know a lot of airgunners hunt game with the SWFA 10x42. They are going for head shots at fairly close range, so a wider field of view isn’t really needed.

If you are harvesting deer and want to be able to take shots of opportunity at game on the move at fairly close range, then the wider field of view would be needed. I think 4x is generally thought to be the max you want on the low end, and just keep it there so you’re ready if game runs through. And it’s nice to be able to find a still target at longer ranges on lower magnification and then zoom in, but not absolutely necessary. With practice sighting over the top of the scope first to get it lined up, finding the target is usually pretty easy.

I would think 6x would be more better on a truck gun. Or an aimpont. Depends on AO I guess
