I'm not so sure dismissing the idea is as easy as you'd like it to be. I may not have made my case well while typing through a glass before. And I'm not looking to get into great debate over long range hypotheticals such as this. But given the political climate right now where no Democrats in Congress would dream of putting their name down to go to war with Russia.

Coupled with a staunch uprising and civil war on the home front, and a healthy dose of distraction with a war in Iran and all the protests, media and political outcry on the government's plate they would be dealing with, and it would be a very plausible outcome to have Russia slip into to Alaska and take control of all the ports and commercial shipping. By the time we knew what hit us and turned our fleet that direction they'd be plenty fortified.

Even then I don't think Democrats would give the nod to Trump with approval of war declaration against Russia. Overnight Russia would be declared a hero for kicking in the teeth of the US and be heavily reinforced by every enemy we have, some would be vocal, and others like China would be doing it under the table.

That's not true . Dipersal of forces . We trained during the the Cold War for just such a scenario .
