Well this is probably my first official SH post. However I have pooped in and out the last six years or so. Projects like a house, cars, etc have always prevented me from building or buying a precision rifle. Somehow during my aimless hours on the internet during this stay at home time I ended up in the Lefty for sale section and purchase a Surgeon 591 lefty action mated to a Krieger 308 win barrel. I then purchased a XLR Element stock that I have always fancied. While on the hunt for a used stock I stumbled upon a barreled V-22 lefty action and somehow ended up purchasing that with Triggertech diamond triggers for both. So now that I have two rifles in the works I need scopes. From what I gather the Vortex AMG would be a good fit for the .308. It’s a little more than I’d prefer to spend but if the expense is worth it, I’m in. I’ve always wanted to purchase something Nightforce so I am trying to make sense of their different models as well. As mentioned sub $2k would be nice. But I am willing to go over if the return is there. I have a hunting rifle so I mainly plan on shooting from a bipod or bench from 100-500 yards. I’d like to eventually try farther but who knows when or where that will happen.

On the V-22 I know I’ll mainly shoot 50-100 yards and sometimes try a little further. Obviously it’s not a basic 1022 so I’d like to get a scope that matches the “caliber” of the action.

Any suggestions for both would be appreciated!

If you're not in a hurry continue watching the optics px. Great deals pop up all the time. A nib amg just sold for 1600 last week.

AMG's are worth the price. Night force ATACR are really nice as well. S&B's are right there. Nightforce nx8 is a step down in glass, closer to the vortex razor's. Which is still pretty good.

Athlon midas tac gets a lot of love from the rimfire crowd and won't break the bank. Not my favorite, but I get that not everyone wants a 2k+ optic on their 22.

I went Athlon Cronus on my Vudoo and am very happy. Mid priced but great glass. Would serve well on anything I think ... I would consider another for a CF build. I have a Steiner M and a G2 Razor on my CF rifles and it seems as good or better than both of those. Razor is a tank though ... hard to beat for "serious" work in that price range.

"I have pooped :poop: in and out." :ROFLMAO::ROFLMAO::ROFLMAO:

The Tango 6 are pretty nice on the lower end or around 1k. Athlon Cronus, Bushnell DMRII, or LRTS. For more excellent cheaper options. The NF ATACR 4-16x42, I think is also sub 2k. The Vortex Razor is always popular in that price range also, as is the AMG.

also depends on how and when you are going to shoot.
if you are a sunny day shooter etc the "glass" doesnt have to be perfect
shooting a 22lr at 100 yards at little junk/swingers/paintballs or dots on paper is very different than shooting dark birds and squirrels at dusk
for the 22lr spend on higher magnification as long as you can parallax down to 15-20 yards..the extra magnification is like cheating in that close

Living in Southern California I have to drive about an hour to the range so unfortunately I won’t be able to wake up and walk out back to shoot like some of you guys can. Most shooting will be mid day. If I can hone my skill at all it would be fun to shoot competitions as I do that with sporting clays now. However I am as green as can be when it comes to precision shooting.

I agree that it depends on what you expect and how you plan to shoot. I tend to be a precision type shooter and my scope selection shows that. My 2 Anschutz 54-18s wear a NF 5-55 Comp and a NF 42X Comps, my Anschutz 1727 has a NF NXS 7-35, my AR wears a NF ATAR 7-35. Notice that the 22s don't get cheap glass? I expect to shoot super small groups and the glass needed must be up to the task!

when i was a kid i used to call a nice spring day "rifle range weather"...still do actually
after i picked up a nice 22 a few years ago i did the same searching
i bought a march optic
they dont get much fan fare around here (every site has their favorites)
you can find very good deals on them, used in f-class, ELR, benchreast, tier 1 optics
glass is almost as good as my SB and was brighter than my kahles (all 3 of those scopes were top of the product line models and $ wise)

also sightron makes very very nice scopes in your price range as well

Look at the Sightron S-TAC line. You don't get bragging rights that you would get with a $2K scope, but what you do get is a very good scope for the price point. The Sightron III line i also very good, but a little higher than the S-TAC line.

Fellow Lefty and .308 and V22 shooter here, my $0.02:
Put an AMG on the Vudoo and a Razor II 4-27 x 56 on the Surgeon .308.
The AMG goes down to 25y parallax and is perfect for the vudoo, and the Razor is tough with a great eyebox and some weight to mitigate recoil.
Also, if you get the mil/mil EBR-7C in the Razor and EBR-2B in the AMG (iirc?), you'll be using almost identical floating-dot, .2 mil wind-hold reticles, very similar feeling and operating turrets, which is all nice and consistent. And Vortex has your back.
Did you grab that LRI Surgeon in the PX--that was nice!

Yes, that was me! I should be starting the paperwork on it the beginning of next week. I like the idea of the brands and reticles matching. Playing devil's advocate is there a Nightforce combination that would be similar to this pair? Or should I even both going down that rabbit hole?

That was a good snag!!
I use the AMG/Razor matching reticles and it's been a great combo.
I think a similar NF set up would be an ATACR 5-25 or 7-35 Mil-XT for the 308, and an NX8 in 4-32 Mil-XT for the Vudoo, since the NX8 parallaxes down to 11yards, also the 7-35 goes down to 10y, but is $$$$. But the NF 7-35 is AMAZING. But I have not looked thru an NX8, and I suspect the AMG is better, fwiw.
I have had great CS experience with NF on an old F1 refurbish, but never had to use Vortex's CS, so you can't go wrong. Some of the tactile scope features are very different though across NF/VTX, so think it all through based on HOW you will be using them. Sound like a good quarantine exercise.
Sounds like you have fun choices to make--just make sure you post pics!

I have no clue how I will be using them to be frank. Hence my vague questions haha. I have a really weird thing for matching brands, so the Vortex combo will be the way I most likely go. I will try and keep an eye out second hand since I have all of the CA FFL lag time.
