The AR15 Picture Thread

Let's see if I can make a side folder AR' pistol worthy of being a Texas BBQ gun! I started with a SanTan STT-15L billet receiver set and a 10.5" Noveske HFCL barrel. The feed ramps were contoured and polished. The headspace on the Ionbond DLC coated JP bolt came in at an ideal 14.656". The bolt carrier is the JP FMOS. The LAW Tactical folder makes this one more than a bit different from most AR' pistols you see. The GearHead Works Tailhook Mod 1 is my top choice in pistol braces. The forend is a 9.5" Geissele Mk 14. Note the Geissele Airborn Super Charging Handle is used here. The Geissele SD-3G trigger with the lighter spring supplied breaks at 3.25 LB. We have a Magpul MOEK2 pistol grip; the straighter grip seems to work better with shorter guns for most shooters. Out front is the ubiquitous Surefire WarComp. It's a great choice for reducing flash and muzzle climb, and of course provides interface with the excellent Surefire SOCOM RC and RC2 sound suppressors. V Seven supplied every small part in titanium, aluminum and S7 tool steel.

Wes
Do you use any specific spring with the H2 buffer in a 10.5” carbine gas pistol?

Mine could use some taming, have been debating just the H2, or than and an improved spring over stock with the SB brace/buffer tube.

Your builds are sweet.

Someday when I meet the future Mrs I think it better to buy a Gucci AR such as one of yours vs a fancy ring...... and if that along with a basic band works, thats a good sign!!! ?

Thanks for posting. I learn a good bit from your builds you show.

This rig is still 100% new and not yet even fired yet. I'm just using a standard recoil spring - so far. "Standard" is always my point of departure. And I have a full array of buffers in different weights if needed. I've also got a Geissele recoil system on the way to try, too.

Normally, I'm a 100% Vltor A5 guy, but, to use the way cool Gearhead Works brace, I've got to go with their carbine length lower receiver extension and an appropriate recoil system that will fit inside.

The H2 buffer may or may not be the answer with the way this Noveske barrel is ported and the intended Mk 318 Mod 1 ammo. Noveske gas ports tend to be on the generous side. And Mk 318 Mod 1 is warm. Add a SF SOCOM RC2 and we have even more dwell time...

Also, keep in mind the JP bolt carrier has that seriously massive 2.5 ounce LAW spacer stuck in the back - producing way more reciprocating mass than going up a step or even more in recoil buffer weight. Even an H buffer may therefore prove to be too heavy. Gotta see how this thing ejects brass and locks back on an empty mag.

The LAW folder is still new territory for me. I've just done a couple before, but they worked out well, like nothing was different at all.

Which is scarier, when things don't work right but you think you know why? Or when things work right and you aren't not sure why?

The LAW folder is such an interesting mod' that it's well worth stepping a little out of my comfort zone to get to know it.

I've always said that "Overkill is Underrated". This is Overkill: SanTan STT-15L billet receiver set; Noveske 10.5" Hammer forged, chrome lined barrel, with feed ramps contoured and polished; headspace checked at 1.45656"; ; Geissele 9.5" Mk 14 rail; Surefire WarComp; Geissele Airborne Super Charging Handle; TriggerTech 3.5 LB straight trigger; Gear Head Woks Mod 2 pistol brace; H2 recoil buffer with Spingco spring; Magpul plastic; almost every titanium part V Seven makes.

I like the looks of that brace, is it pretty solid?

I have a SBPDW on one of my pistols now, and I’d like to swap it out for something that’ll allow me to use a law tactical folder...make it more backpack friendly.

The SB tactical non PDW braces work with the LAW folder.
They fold nicely and work fit well into a Kelty Redwing pack.

A few posts up he shows this gearhead one with a folder.

@MSTN - I noted you did say this latest brace is your favorite.
It seems to be more firm once locked down than the SB choices? Is this why?

looks like it may be a bit wider at the rear? Hard to tell from these “gun porn” pics.

The SB brace is 100% GTG. It also will allow the use of the Vltor A5 recoil system, another big plus in my book.

The Gear Head Works Mod 2 brace has a proprietary lower receiver extension the of standard carbine length. It can take a conventional recoil spring and buffer, as in the case of the pistol in question, a JP Silent Capture Spring, etc. What I like most about this brace is it is completely RIGID. No give, play, flex of any sort.

I just got this Geissele Super Duty 11.5 upper, with front BUIS. Everything seems top notch. This Unity Tactical FAST Mount is also new for me. It has a built-in rear iron sight. I'm looking forward to using this for my night vision setup. But even without NV, I think I'm sold on this Micro mount.

I don't know that they are Gov't. They don't specify on their website. This one appears to be the same diameter on both sides of the gas block. I haven't had the hand guard off to measure.

The BUIS is standard height (cowitness).

The red dot height is 2.26" (optical centerline). It takes a little getting used to, but it's actually faster and easier to use. You don't have to scrunch your neck up to get into the sights. It allows more of an upright head position.

For precision work I would choose a low mount. But for speed I would choose a high mount. Not to mention the flexibility with being able to see through the red dot when wearing night vision.

Changed this one up a bit, new stock, new buffer tube, new grip, new trigger, new BCG, new mount and scope, just waiting on the can to be released.

Still going to be primarily used for hunting, but it’ll see a little range duty also.

Seekins receivers, Seekins LPK, fortis stock & charging handle, smoke composites grip & buffer tube, proof 6.5 Grendel barrel, lancer handguard, SOLGW Scalper BCG, JP bolt, Geissele ssa-e Trigger, S&B Polar T96 4-16x56 FFP scope in a Spuhr Mount.

Not quite finished yet. Still needs a F/A, BUIS, scope & scope mount, but just about there...

Recently built up a 20" DMR gun and am happy with the results. 20" criterion barrel doing work. Slinging 73gr elds at 2740 ish, should be solid.

What is the brand of rail that your scope rings are attached to?
A Larue riser. I just used that instead of a unimount so I could get a 0moa 1.375 height (that matches the height for a UTC clip on thermal and the NF rings let me add a rail on top for a radius rangefinder )

I also use YHM and Leupold risers

Here’s a Seekins with a NX8 2.5-20 and a Proof 6.5 cm barrel
