Yes the $30 dongle they sell you will NOT work with the PC Profile loader... you need the $60 cable.
However if you use your phone the built in Bluetooth will work with the app and that's how most people use there Kestrels.

Kinda of annoying, since my Garmin 701 has a mirco usb port and works great with the PC app without $60 cable...

It is the most reliable method for comms with a computer. With the massive differences in hardware across the board, the cable interface is the most reliable and works with all versions of the Kestrel.
