Looking to add a between-the-studs wall safe in my bedroom big enough for my AR9 7” pistol or possibly my 11.5” BCM.

So far, options by V-Line appeal to me the best. Looking at the QuickVault XL and the ClosetVault II (still need to measure guns to see if the +$300 jump up to the ClosetVault is necessary). Both models have Push button locking mechanisms (no biometric batteries to replace or a key to lose), looks like quality steel construction, small footprints easily hidden behind a mirror or similar wall-hanging object, and they’re Made in USA. A little pricey for sure for essentially a steel cabinet, but it looks to be the best option I’ve found. Looking for more ideas if anyone has a suggestion?

I’m aware these types of “safes” will not deter a determined burglar or those with lots of time to kill while they try to gain access, but that’s what my basement safe is for. My priorities for this project focus on ease of access for the wife while I work overnights, and keeping the HD gun which I keep available to her out of my young children’s hands and away from prying eyes. Hiding it behind a piano-hinged mirror is my current plan.

Anyone with experience or recommendations for another deserving brand or other ideas would be welcome.

i built one years ago that was just a hidden panel. i didnt use glass. i used a material that wouldnt break and reveal the hiding spot.
I actually thought about using a TacticalWalls insert initially, but recently decided I want something more secure to keep my kids out of it.

No one has any experience with the VLine products or other suggestions?

No experience with V line, but I have installed some custom made units that are similar.
I suggest doing the installation on an interior wall to help mitigate condensation issues.

use the same thing against them that you are using against everyone else.....if they dont know it is there.....
Just my opinion, but forcing my 2 year old out of the room or trying to be careful to not let them find out it’s there while I put my gun away doesn’t seem very realistic, and only invites curiosity. He’s not old enough to understand firearm safety, but he’s plenty curious. If the few child/firearm incidents I’ve had to investigate have taught me anything, it’s that kids know where parents keep their guns...even if the parents don’t think they do.

....who’s wearing the pants? where do they go when you fuck your wife?

You mean where does he go when they fuck his wife?

A: He hides in his wall safe and cries.

To the op, do you let them come into the toilet when you take a shit too?

we will disagree on that. my kids were around guns 24/7/365. never ONCE had an issue. and as far as forcing a kid out of a room.....who’s wearing the pants? where do they go when you fuck your wife?

as for the rest.......you know your family and yourself best....do what works for you.

Your 2 year old was allowed unrestricted access to firearms? Wow. Just because it didn’t end badly for you doesn’t mean it’s a good idea to allow access to loaded firearms (even if they are in a hidden location). I’ve seen it happen, and every one of those parents who is SURE their kid(s) would never touch their gun without their permission and supervision was proven wrong. Take one look at a kid with a gunshot wound inflicted by his older brother, and you’d change your lackadaisical tune about firearm storage around your own kids.

That’s all without mentioning that if (God forbid) something were to happen, my employment would also be on the line. My department has a very strict policy regarding firearm storage in the vicinity of minors and people with firearm ownership restrictions. Unauthorized access to my duty weapon leading to an incident means I probably won’t have a job anymore.

You mean where does he go when they fuck his wife?

A: He hides in his wall safe and cries.

I love seeing the people on this forum who feel the need to assert to random strangers that they wear the pants in their household like you two. Good for you. Thank you for the productive conversation on the topic at hand. If you have nothing constructive to add with regards to the reasoning I’ve laid out that has not already been addressed, move on instead of showing us how wide your cock holster can stretch.

I make my kids listen to me too (and yes, I do shit in peace) but forcing them out of the bedroom when I get home from work while they’re following me around being excited I’m home just so I can put my gun away breeds curiosity on what they aren’t supposed to be seeing and knowing. Kids understand more subtleties than you could believe, and human nature leads to them snooping when you’re not around. As I stated before that’s how bad shit happens when kids are involved.

I feel I’ve laid out my request for any helpful information and the reasons why I’m looking for these specific criteria adequately. Telling me that your kids turned out just fine isn’t a good argument

But by all means, You two continue to be the Kings of your Domain. You’re clearly bigger and better men than I.

Anyone with experience with the listed products, or suggestions on a better product to fit my outlined needs would be appreciated. Basically anything other than, “I wear the pants in my family and my kids are fucking Navy SEALs with Ranger tabs,” would be appreciated information.[/QUOTE]

dont twist my words. i know i am direct and at times that comes off as harsh, but i wouldnt have replied to the thread just to squirt a shot of hot piss in your face.

when the FUCK did i ever say my kids had unrestricted access to my guns? what i said was, they were around guns 24/7/365 and i never had an issue....BECAUSE (and evidently i have to spell this out for you) they were told they were STRICTLY off limits. OBVIOUSLY common-fucking-sense was used. forgive me, but i assume you had some of that; even though it is getting rarer with each passing day.

and another nugget for you....dont assume you’re the only fuckwit who has seen a thing or two. i’ve witnessed more than my fair share of horrors.

i hope you find a solution that works for you and your family. be safe out there. with current events as they are; it’s good to have your wife prepared. best wishes to you and yours.

I have wondered about these safes for years but never tried one. When my daughter was very young, maybe 2-3, I kept the only pistol I had where she couldn’t get to it. at least not easily. By the time she was 5 shit had changed as and I was shooting rifle competition. When she turned 5 we really started firearms safety, she got her first Red Ryder and we went over the difference between toys and real firearms. She also started practicing safe handling, clearing, etc. We never had an issue with her as there was no fascination BUT when the neighborhood girls came over to visit I didn’t leave shit out. At least not on the kitchen table, or where ai our my keys and wallets, etc.

I’m curious to read if anyone has used these. It seems to be a nice option Even if just to free up some space in the main safe. Hopefully they doesn’t spiral down the SH toilet and become irrelevant.

at the stage I am now,I leave shit out all over the house. I’m 23 years past where the OP is with little ones. Maybe not the best practice but if age has taught me anything it’s that I’m not getting into a steel box quickly form a dead sleep. Shit, I have a hard enough time during the day now ;)

@myronman3

The combo of your post and the one below set me off last night. The comment re: the wife was out of bounds and obviously the douchebag below you ran with it and added nothing of value. That pointless dick-swinging overshadowed my reading of your entire post.

I made a similar assumption about your 24/7/365 comment as you did about my comment regarding having my kids leave the bedroom to hide my gun. Clearly I have the ability to give my kids the boot when I need to, but as I previously stated my concern is with the stupid choices they will make when I’m not around. I’m glad your kids didn’t have any issues when it comes to firearms. Unfortunately it’s not uncommon for otherwise respectful/mindful kids around their parents to be little assholes when parental supervision is not present. That can just as easily transfer to firearms handling unfortunately, and until mine are old/responsible enough that I feel comfortable giving my kids the code to my gun safe, I’d like to have as many safeguards against inevitable juvenile stupidity as possible.

Being told my guns are strictly off-limits will also happen in my household, but I know I made some stupid decisions as a kid and I expect my oldest to behave just like he is his father’s son at times.

i think if you teach them well, and are respected in your house (and i am sure you are) you’ll do fine. it is EXTREMELY wise to be concerned about it, and the absolute best thing you can do is TEACH, TEACH, TEACH! a gun in the corner was no different than a pair of car keys sitting on the table for the kids-they knew it wasnt their’s, and they were to leave it alone. it also was about as interesting as a coffee cup to them- because it wasnt something new or different.

i dont know how you were raised, but i had guns around me as a kid constantly. it was just the way it was. never really was a problem; because if i wanted to use them, all i had to do was ask and dad would take me out and let me. maybe that’s why i was confident with the way i handled things.

regarding the wife comment....direct and maybe shocking to some? yup. that’s how i communicate. i find it far more effective when it comes to making my point. as do all my peers. and i talk to everyone like that. even the kids that are around me. and there isnt one motherfucker that knows me that would say i’ma a shitbag. everyone knows that they can count on me; and most turn to me when shit gets heavy.
^ that’s the long way of saying, i am rough around the edges, but didnt mean any disrespect toward your wife, you, or your kids. and didnt intend to open the door for anyone else to do it, either.

Further complicating this issue is the local and state ordinances about locking guns up. I choose to ignore them, as I believe this is an infringement on my safety BUT I also understand if I get broken into when we’re away and some scumbag walks off with a loaded 12.5” AR and a handful of loaded pistols it’s not going to go well for me.

I like the idea of RF ID or finger print unlock functions but I work in cellular commo and I have seen million dollar shit not work when it’s needed so the chances of a $13 lock holding my lifeline behind it at 2am malfunctioning is too great. I guess this is telling me I need to move.....

You’re welcome.

Seriously though, holy fuck man grow a thicker skin. Sticks and stones etc etc.

Legitimate questions in the forum don’t deserve your bullshit. Insults and stupidity are more than welcome, often encouraged and spurred on in the Bear Pit. I enjoy some time fucking around and arguing with morons in the Bear Pit just like everyone else, but fucking up legitimate threads asking for legitimate input has been addressed recently by the forum owner. Go be a dick somewhere else.

Many more reasons than kids to lock up any loaded firearm when not on the body. I'm one of those who wear their handgun until bed, but there is also a loaded rifle in the house and occasionally other loaded handguns. I've long kept a small handgun safe in the bedroom, one no longer made, but with a four button mechanical lock. It's not even bolted down, just insures a loaded pistol is unobtainable. The rifle also goes in a wall locker, similar to the V-line product but not between studs. Also with a mechanical Simplex four button lock. The loaded shotgun is in a clamshell device that covers the receiver, bolted in a closet.
This way no one can access a loaded gun, not children, guests, service people, burglars, anyone. My children were raised around guns, but when they were old enough to have their own loaded gun, they also got their own locked box to keep it in when not wearing it. I just don't believe in accessible loaded firearms outside of my immediate view and I've taught my family the same thing.

No, you are a hypocrite. Don’t “call people out for being a dick” and then behave like a dick yourself.
I prefer the golden rule personally. People get what they give, as it should be.

If more people got punched in the face when they insulted others, the world would be a much better place for all.

Back to the topic at hand...Anyone else with a relevant thought checking out this shitshow?

Careful now.
If you go around calling people names and try to punch someone who hasn’t actually insulted you, you might just get hit yourself.

Back to the topic at hand... If you are going to leave loaded firearms laying around for your unsupervised children to find, do your wife and child both a favour and get something with a lock on it.

There are more reasons than just curious kids to keep your shit locked up and stored securely.

I was told of a man who went inside after mowing his yard and found a intruder inside. Happy ending, because the only loaded firearm was with the homeowner. Remembering that story is one reason I keep the loaded guns locked up. Also why I carry when mowing the yard.

I used Stack-On in wall safes when I built my house. Push button code, key backup, I’m satisfied with them.

I used to have a V-line in an old house and liked it a lot. It had the simplex lock which was super quick and always worked. Had my kids paint me a picture that I hung over the top of it in the bedroom. It had plenty of room for fullsize mp with light and a couple of extra mags, pepper spray, spare cash.

Appreciate the feedback. I purchased the QuickVaultXL and it was delivered last week.
Initial impressions are that although it was expensive, I’m happy with my purchase. This wall cabinet oozes quality. Powder coating is well done, the lock was easy to program to my own combination, and the door/lock operation is very smooth. I also realized I can easily fit my loaded BCM 11.5” 5.56 inside it if I want to, and I’m gonna get a magnetic hook to store my EDC on.
Hope to get it mounted in the wall next week.
