6X5 Thread V5.0 *new 1/1/21*

Wha

R:

Good shooting. Wind was consistent? What type of ammunition? What type of support?

Do bullet holes have same diameter on shoot-and-see targets as paper?
rick137, great questions. I shot early morning, winds NNE at 4mph, but not gusting. I used Eley Match, with a Caldwell BR front rest and rear bag. "Splatter" target holes are the same, but they are encircled with the yellow ring, to help me see at 200 yards. Makes it much easier for me to zero my scope and check windage using an 8 inch splatter, then switch over and shoot the 6 inch splatters for the 6x5.

Just posted these results in my RimX review thread but here is the Krieger 100yd test results. It had posted my best 50yd results to date last week and now it shot the best 100yd results Ive shot to date. CenterX continues to hammer in all these barrels and all random lots shot, no cherry picked lot.

I'll present my intended entry as well as a target that does not meet the letter of the rules but I believe meets the spirit of the rules. I picked up a Vudoo V22 barreled action (18" MTU profile) in the early days of our quarantine which I completed with a Trigger Tech Diamond, MDT ACC folder and stole the Sightron SIII 10-50 from another rifle. The first range trip was windy but it showed some promise. Today was the second time I've shot the rifle to gather drop for an upcoming ORPS match (similar to NRL22) I though I'd try the 6x5 at 100yd with a lot of Center-X which performs well in my KIDD barreled SR-22 resulting in a 0.985" average and a best group of 0.791" which was a little disappointing compared to my expectations. This was shot prone off interlock pavers with a Ckye pod and an Armageddon Gear Squishy Rear Bag.

IMG_3370.JPG

I still had a clean target on the stand and a brick of Center-X that didn't shoot well in my SR-22 or my Vostok CM-2. Not one to take a clean target off the backer nor particularly fond of taking unfired ammo home, I started pounding out 5 shot groups like I was on the clock. 8x 5 shot groups averaging 0.724" with a best of 0.578" which I'm quite pleased with. 8x5 is not 6x5 but I'm claiming within the spirit of the rules as every shot on the paper is counted in the average.

IMG_3369.JPG

And I know it's not on the range but it's the only photo I have of the rifle. I think it needs an extended length thread protector to look right in the ACC chassis.

Jeff, great looking rifle, that 8X5 is perfectly acceptable to use. I can use that average as it is better than your 6x5 and note that it is an 8X5, but if there are 6 consecutively shot groups that will average out lower you can use those (like the first 6, last 6, or middle 6) it is still fine to use. The only thing about using a string of more than 6 groups is the 6 groups have to be shot one right after another, meaning you can’t shoot 4 great groups blow the 5th then shoot a smoking 6th and decide to add a 7th to take the place of the bad 5th. I just don’t know the order the Last target was shot, so let me know what you want to do.

.... I just don’t know the order the Last target was shot, so let me know what you want to do.
Thanks. The target was shot in the order you would read it (left to right starting with the top row) and in the orientation of my writing. I really didn’t have high expectations for this target when I started, I thought I was just burning an underperforming lot of Center-X while getting used to running the rifle quickly. I think the rifle could shoot in the 0.2’s under ideal conditions. At least I won’t be questioning the rifle when I miss from a barricade position.

I see 0.664" average if you don't use the first two groups. Nice shooting at 100 yds.! Nice looking setup you have. I've heard of some folks having the chassis cut down when using a shorter barrel. They also make fake suppressors and muzzle breaks that would extend the length of the barrel with your current setup.

I like the first target you posted with the square blocks, do you happen to have a blank .pdf file you could post of it so we can download it?

45ACP223, if you need a target, let me know. I can create one to your specs. No cost, just a little time to create to your liking. I am a Co-Director for monthly Postal Matches and create targets for our matches. Glad to help if you need one. Just let me know what you want.

Take care.

It’s my own design, printed on cover stock (heavier than regular paper but lighter than card stock). I only had one with my yesterday. I’ll upload it later this evening. Is there a thread of user submitted targets or shall I post a couple here?

Targets are based on 0.25" grid.

jgraves, I like the 6 bull as well. I would get rid of the inner circle and maybe a thinner line for all the blocks, but I'm going to try the one you posted. I appreciate you posting it.

rimfireshooter99, thanks for the offer, I'll let you know if I come up with a design that I think would work.

No problem. I have attached a copy of one I made for the 6x5, just as a reference while you see what would work best for you.

I like the 6 bull design. For floating dot reticles, the black gets easily lost with the heavy black cross in the center of your target. Could you do a design that's either open or red at the inner of the 6bull?
Is this what you had in mind?

@padom are those 3/8" target squares ? How do you manage to get them so regular spaced ?

You can cut down the ACC pretty easily if you want it shorter to fit your 18" V22 :)

That looks great littlepod, I'm just hesitant to cut my new chassis. My intention is to spin up a custom 6" long thread protector or muzzle brake on the lathe when I have some spare time. I prefer the feel of a longer rifle (it moves slower / smoother in less steady positions) and I can always remove it if I need the extra maneuverability. POI shift should be minimal with the MTU contour and quite repeatable.

I have a go at 50 yards this evening. 30*C, very little wind and I shot from the shadow on the range table to keep the sun out of my face. I have a 50 yard entry for the SR-22 in the first series of this challenge and though I would try to better it. The first 2 shots killed that idea. The rifle would not shoot this evening. I think the issue is heavy carbon buildup on the crown. I have mostly been shooting barricades at 20 yards (indoors) and hadn't noticed the accuracy fall off but the barrel shroud / weight I made is blowing all the crap back onto the barrel.

IMG_3372.JPG

And the resulting disappointment down range (0.755" at 50 yards), with my best group worse than my previous average.
IMG_3379.JPG

So on to the more interesting target with the Vudoo, this time with range photos.
IMG_3373.JPG
IMG_3374.JPG

My worst individual shot was the first shot of the fourth group. I aimed off center for the remaining 4 shots to recover the group and 0.286" average.
IMG_3380.JPG

BTW, a big (y) to jbell for maintaining this challenge 🍻.

Jeff

Your very welcome! I have your Vudoo and SR-22 on the 50 yard results. Is that a NXS you have on the SR-22? If so does it completely correct parallax at 50 yards? The few I had many years ago would not, I really like those scopes.

No, the SR-22 wears a 7-35 ATACR. No problem correcting for parallax at 20 yards at the indoor pistol range. I will eventually move it to the Vudoo as the Sightron 10-50 is not great for ORPS / CRPS matches (Canadian series similar to NRL22 and NRL22X). I have no complaints about the Sightron, it’s clear, tracks well and is great for shooting groups but SFP, coarsely graduated reticle and limited travel are limiting on many stages.

They do look similar and the photo isn't great to see the rifle but I wanted to show the shooting position in the shadow of the table.

shot some this morning while the winds were light, im running short of my best ammo, but managed to squeeze out a new best 6 groups at 50, and a new best single group at 100 using CX

New best 50 yd avg: .212 CTC, .405 MOA
New best single 100 yd group: .342 CTC, .327 MOA

all shot prone, bipod, rear bag. winds picked up by the time i got to 200, groups no better than my last.

I am posting a tgt for a new (old) rifle that I have named "the Ugly Girl". She will eat anything you feed her and still put out like a crack-ho. She ain't much to look at but she is still a keeper. It is a Winchester Model 52B cira 1950 topped with an older Fecker 10x scope that is an amazing old optic. This target was literally the first 30rds that I put on paper with her after zeroing the scope on a dirt clod. The first shot on paper wiped out the "x" at the center of the bull.

50y with 2 piece rest/sandbag
Ammo was a blend of SK Rifle match and Lapua CX (I was testing random lots but she just kept pounding them into the 10-ring)

Best = 0.170", 0.325 MOA
Ave = 0.233", 0.445 MOA

It is good to be back on the board. I have another "Pretty Girl" 52B that is a stunning looker but is a bit of a tease. She seems to have more expensive tastes for caviar and fillet Mignon. But if you feed her right she seems to transform into a bad girl. I only zeroed her scope this morning and was testing lots but recorded a 5-shot grp at 50y that was 0.040" c-c with Midas+ and another that was 0.160" plus another good one with Eley blk that measured 0.150". Will have to post a 6x5 for her another day since my tux is at the cleaners and it was too hot for black tie this morning anyway. In the meantime, me and the twins are back home with a cold one. Hooah.

Irish

Was really surprised at the performance of the SK Semi Auto.

Irish, welcome back I have you and your 52 on the results.

drglock, nice shooting I have your RimX on the results also.

I did a 6x5 on the Remington 37 using irons today to get the sights figured out for silhouettes. I have a Redfield Olympic rear but couldn't get it low enough for 50 yards, I'm bottomed out. Luckily I had my Centra rear sight with me so I threw it on until I can come up with a taller front sight dovetail block.

Avg: .452"/.863 MOA
Best: .180"/.344 MOA
Centra rear sight/Redfield International front
Wolf Match Target
50 yards

Great shooting and a beautiful 37! It's good to see more old iron with apertures on the list. I haven't shot in over a month so I may have to get one of my 52D's with apertures out and warm it up and give this another shot.

I'm posting this for comment more than a official entry. :) This was shot at 200 yards with my Vudoo, NF 7-35 from a bench, bipod and rear bag, SK Biathlon ammo. The top left target was the first shot. The dark black circles were easy to see. I'm pretty sure I could determine which bullets belonged in which group. Best group 1.95", average 2.80".

Then I shot the top target with the SH 6x5 target using the diamond as my aiming point. My cross hair covered the diamond and it was hard to see. I changed my scope setting trying to get the group inside the circle. I'm not sure which bullets go with which target.

Last I shot the SH 6x5 target using the circle as my aiming point. It was a little easier to see. I kept changing my scope setting trying to get the bullets in the circle. I can't even guess which bullets go where.

I learned a lesson. For me at least I need to use the whole 8.5 by 11" paper to collect all my shots. Plus I should quit messing with my scope in the middle of a string. :ROFLMAO:

Wind was about 2-3 MPH and didn't mess with me a lot.

I'm still learning. :)

I had the chance to try the 6 X 5 with a recently acquired 1712 Featherweight topped with a Meopta Meopro 4X14 using CCI SV 40 gr ammo. Shot prone at 50 yards (via my Vortex Razor 4000). Started out o.k. but then ended up in the popcorn machine towards the end. Definitely going to give it another run (or 20) because I am the weak link in this set-up.... Wind was 1/4 value left to right.....

A real good start. At 200 yards, being on paper is half the challenge. I shoot 200 yards as well, and I use 6-6 inch splatter targets, black rings with a red dot center. Very easy to see, and make windage adjustments. Plus, you don't have to worry so much about which rounds went with which bull. With practice, you can switch to a two-bull 8.5 by 11 as the next step, when you consistently hit the 6 inch splatter target with all 5 shots. Just a suggestion. Good luck!
