What caliber (6.5 Creed or 300WM) would be the better choice?

Hello everyone, I am just getting into long range shooting and am deciding to purchase a new B/A rifle. I would like to know what caliber I should go with. I plan on shooting up to a mile, if I can. Currently, my "long range" experience, if you can call it that, is with a Mosin Nagant 91-30, iron sites, at up to 400 yards. Any and all comments are much appreciated.

Is barrel life or consistency at a mile priority for you?

The 6.5 creed will get to a mile but it's not very practical for that.

If you enjoy being challenged, maybe a frustration or two, and pushing the cartridge to its limits, go 6.5.

Otherwise, a 300 PRC or winmag is the way to go for 1760 engagements...

I would say go with 6.5. Ammo is affordable and barrel life’s longer. Also you wouldn’t want to start with magnum and have to workout or thru flinch factor. Both will get you out there and would be good choices 👍

May want to include if you plan on hunting with this choice.
Also if you really have access to warrant a "mile" caliber choice.
Unless you are out west you may find it hard to get a mile at the range.

The typical noob's rifle use profile:
  • 0 - 100 yds - 50%
  • 100 - 300 yds - 30%
  • 400 - 600 yds - 15%
  • > 600 yds - 5%
Typical noob's first question "What rifle for a mile"

Am I the only one who sees the disconnect between wants and needs?

As an aside, it's WHICH rifle/suppressor/scope/whatever...………….

I live in California and the range nearby has a 1500 yard range. Also I don't plan on hunting with it.

Get a 7.62 CM.
AccurateShooter has a really good write-up on the benefits of 7.62CM

.

Between those two? The 6.5CM. Cheaper to shoot.

You should be learning with a 308 - which you comparatively have to hail mary to a target at 1,000 yads. Teaches you a lot.

You'll end up with a 6mm varient if you get into PRS.
You'll end up with a modern Magnum or Ultra Magnum if you can actually regularly do 1 mile (which is hard to find space for).
You'll end up with a divorce, no money, and/or a boyfriend named Bubba if you aren't careful where you go shooting a mile.

How do you get 5/5 hits at a grand from an 18” .308 with a hail mary???

statistically improbable.

but I love the hate on the .308.

Everyone send me your 168s and 175s. They wont even hit anything past 100 yds!!
I will cover shipping

168smk falls out of the sky at 603yds. I think it actually turns around and goes backwards at 603.4yds.

Pretty different cartridges, not sure how you nailed it down to those two choices.

You should get a .22lr.

Between those two and being just for targets - 6.5. If you want to get good you’ll need to be able to shoot. 6.5 is cheaper with less recoil.

As 308 stated above most of your shooting will be inside 1,000. The 6.5 will do that and out to 1500 pending conditions and ammo

I use a 260 for targets and 300 for hunting. The 260 has been out past a mile. But really shines in the ranges you’ll most likely be shooting

I love 6.5 creed moor and yes I am an ass hole but Jesus loves me this I know for my creed moor told me so . ha ha ha

If you don't know shit about ELR then go 308 and start small, you'll always have a use for it after you learn. If you're not new then quit fucking around and get a 338 LM.

30 06 , Silva Tips and a hayer tragger is all y'all need .
Maybe a good Tasco scope and Bayamm .

The 6.5 will be more fun to sight it! I still remember my experience with a 35 Whelen while wearing a tee shirt! Your mileage may vary!

6.5cm is alright. I like it because its CHEAP and plentiful. 300wm is not cheap. If you think you’ll go out to a mile, you had better be good at reloading or got money for the good shit. But if you are reloading then you need not limit yourself to popular ammo, you could go 6.5x284, 28nosler, 6.5 prc or 30 prc. Id prob go 6.5prc, get a rifle built how i want it and ding steel pretty easily, but if you want to make it more difficult but cheaper, go 6.5cm. Just cause you can hit steel at 1 billion yards with a 40w laser doesn’t make you a good shot, but hitting 1500 yards with a 308 does.

It's scientific fact that the 300WM has less variation due to spin-drift than the 6.5CM. You need to keep that in mind when shooting past 1000 yards.
