I've heard widely conflicting opinions regarding this exact topic. Some people have said 800-1000 rounds while others have said 2,000 rounds and one even said 4,000 rounds through a 300 WSM!

So, what are your thoughts? Have any of you shot out a 300 WSM barrel? If so, how many rounds did you get out of it?

Re: 300 WSM Barrel life?

I guess it depends on what your accuracy standards are. If your a competition shooter where every bit of accuracy counts then i'd say 1000-2000 is about right. If you just want it to last through "ok" accuracy then probably closer to 2500-3000 and obviously you can use a barrel for however long you wish to, it just really depends on how accurate you want it to be in the end. If its a hunting rifle that won't see any long range duty then accuracy is alot less necessairy and the barrel will last longer.

Re: 300 WSM Barrel life?

I have a Lawton 10 twist barrel that I have over 2500 rounds through it. I was shooting 65 then reducing down to 63 grains of H4350 after about 1700 round. My throught was out .05". Not that big of a deal considering I knew I was shooting hot. The barrel is being cut down for my second 300WSM right now. It took me over 2 years to shoot all that ammo and it was a blast.

The nice thing was, I was still holding .3" or better 5 shot groups. But since groups do not matter to some folks... I hit a 12" square plate at 1650 yds 5 times in a row out of 6 rounds my last time out. My first round miss was .5 mil right and .9 mil low. Shooting partner had the same correction call. Dialed it in and rang out 5 dingers. I had plenty of life left in mine.

Build it and shoot it.

Rodent,

How long is the barrel and what bullet are you using? Also, how many fps is your bullet flying at?

Thanks,

Re: 300 WSM Barrel life?

Mac,
I have a 28" barrel. I was shooting 65gr of H4350 behind 208 A Max bullets. 210M primers and Norma brass. I shoot a single shot Lawton action. The velocity was 3050 with 65gr and 2890 with 63gr. There is a pretty good thread on it here somewhere. Just search my posts.

I can't wait to get my repeater built. The 300WSM is my favorite and its versatile.

BTW, bcw1284 is dead on about the FN. My first 300 was an FN and it was as nice a rifle as you could want. Not a custom build but close enough.

Good luck to you.

+1 on shooting it till it needs replaced. Shoot the hell out of it.

So an apprentice at my gunsmith said my 325wsm should get 300 rounds. I told him I already put 400 rounds through two rifles of that caliber as I left them with him to put muzzle brakes on. The gunsmith put a bore scope through them and said they were in excellent condition. I called Browning and asked their opinion and the rep said I should get at least 1500 with no problems as he already did with his 325wsm. If your a competition shooter I suppose it would make a more noticeable difference. Until mine shoots 3 inch groups at 100 yards I really don't give a damn. As long as they can kill what I aim at within 500 yards I don't give a damn. Currently I am shooting 2" groups offhand at 100 yards on average(sometimes 3"). From a bench with a front sandbag I get sub moa. I think barrel makers love all these people concerning themselves with burned out barrels-lol.

Necropost? Wow how observant of you- lol. Considering the little importance of things I see people talking about on these forums, what would be the difference? Only someone who needs to get a real life would think current posts are the way to be. I guess you figure your little mind is more relevant than it actually is- LMAO.

Things change. 9 year old posts aren't exactly the best place to get info.

But since you quoted an old post and didn't ask or comment on anything I'm assuming you're just an idiot.

Barrel life is highly variable and nobody can tell you how long it'll last. Shoot out a few and you'll know hot long they last for you.

Sure if you say so - LMAO. Some of you forum participants are too funny.
