Maggie’s Dave Chappell - When Keeping it real - goes wrong

maybe if they didn't all have both hands on their guns, one of them might have tackled him. or billy clubbed him. They stayed at standoff range and shouted orders. Needed to get his attention, preferably with something less than 7x 9mm

Yep.

In my years in LE, I never missed an opportunity to go hands-on early. When you intervene early, you can get that train off the tracks before it gains speed and you really get fucked (like the above video).

Wish the media would wait even 30 seconds for some possible context before distributing partial video segments and fanning racial flames. I see a few signs in that video that there’s more to be said than just “black guy shot in back by white police officer.”
If we’ve learned anything from the George Floyd case, it’s that even the seemingly worst case scenario in a short video clip can lack necessary context to make a total assessment.

Kenosha’s been busy lately. They just wrapped up their last OIS this week and have been wrangling up those who aided/abetted the dickhead’s travel to Indiana.

100%.

Looks like he’s got something in his hand

True. Additionally, without knowing the reason for the contact/detention, statements made, did they have probablecause to arrest and were in the process of arrest when this went sideways..... overall details which make up the totality..... there's no way to logically conclude cops were right or wrong.

No matter what there is no where near enough info for anyone to possibly form an opinion on this. I agree with you.

Just pointing out a possible reason for no hands on.

Not for nothing but when a police officer has his weapon pointed at me and is giving me orders like "show me your hands", "get down on the ground", or "stop or I'll shoot" I figure it's best to pay attention and figure out the details at a later date......when a gun isn't being pointed at me. Maybe he should've considered that thought process before he decided to do something to force them to act.

I think something will come out on it. Behind the van when they had him, all three cops, simultaneously broke contact, created distance and drew weapons. WHY? He came around the front and put something in his pocket. I saw a report they had also attempted taser deployment (totally unverified hearsay rumor on the taser).

Regardless... you don’t all suddenly break contact and go lethal at once. Something happened behind the van.

Be interesting to see the story of what happened. Of course, being a heavily liberal city, it will be buried while the city burns for 6 months and have to be leaked before we find out he pulled a knife or something...

We will see.

First thought, watch the female officer. WTF is she doing?

Second, if you are in close contact...and even if the subject has a gun (not in his hand though), the safest and most prudent course of action is to immediately immobilize him by taking him down (not that stupid academy arm bar/arm drag shit either) or tasing.

I have seen a multitude of videos where the officer was shot by allowing the suspect to create distance and hesitating when they should have been tackling/tasing.

All cops need to be outfitted with bodycams. PERIOD!
As LE, I support this. Most of us do, I believe. A recent study showed that complete incident timeline bodycam video evidence overwhelmingly leads to Federal 1983 lawsuits being dropped/dismissed by summary judgement or being decided in the LE/defendant’s favor at trial.

That said, be prepared for your taxes to go up. It takes a lot of time and manpower to review, archive/store, and retrieve/redact/blur those videos for FOIA requests, even for a small PD/Sheriff’s office.

I heard be had a knife in his hand.... He was either in a domestic disturbance situation or attempting to break one up...not sure. If had a knife taze him or use a baton.... Something before shooting him... You know someone has a video cam going recording the situation......

The knife in the hand changes things. That explains why they immediately broke contact, but not why he wasn't tased. Maybe none of them had tasers?

Why go to a domestic call in the hood? Really?
Your sarcastic lack of empathy is part of whats wrong today...

LE goes to "domestic" calls in the hood because when someone calls, you gotta go and investigate to see if a crime has occurred or people need medical. Its how the cookie crumbles. There are 99%+ good people in the "hood" that need LE help just like anyone else.

So many years ago, in the dim past, I was training as a Paramedic with LA City Fire Dept, in East LA. Whoa, what an MF of a place to train. When we were called to a "domestic", usually, we stopped at a spot a block or two away, to meet the cops who also waited a few minutes, for the combatants to settle the score before we rolled in. Chief Parker Days... Certain areas were a definite no-go until several LAPD were on scene. Same neighborhood (Frogtown) two motorcycle cops got thrashed, their pistols and short sotguns stolen, and one bke stolen the other trashed. Broken arm, kicked in face, ruptured kidney, concussion, and a few other greater than minor injuries. They had gone in under the bridge there, and got ambushed, in response to a call, not waiting. The call was "domestic". Nobody waited after the call went out, so we arrived at the same time as the PD, LAPD, and Glendale PD. The call was made on one of the MC cop's handheld radios, by a gang member. This was supposed to be some kind of warning. We transported to Glendale Adventist, and Chief Gates showed up, with half the command structure, and the Mayor (I forget who that was at the time, I wasn't from down there).

Cool stories. I was a cop in LA county from 2009-2019 (San Gabriel Valley area). I made it safe for the real heroes like you to come in and be heroes. I was also a paramedic (and still am).

I dont disagree with your same sentiments about the aforementioned hood.....The hood needs assistance just as everyone else does. The job isn't for everyone.

Spoken like a true California Democrat. God bless you and thanks for making it safe for heroes to do their job. I'm sure you are proud.

My empathy, as little as there may be, is to the unappreciated, unprepared, LE that charge into these situations and then have their lives ruined, or at minimum changed, forever and for no cause. I hate it for them.

I also noticed that the video that was posted has been heavily edited.

Colour me surprised... not.

Also the guy found out like so many white folks, that your woman is what is going to get you shot up...
Just saying, it's not like the police had nothing better to do and were trolling the neighbourhood, but I'll bet that same woman who called the police is probably front and center marching to get rid of the police right about now.
