Howdy SnipersHide. Noob rifleman here. I just ordered a new scope for my Weatherby Vanguard. The new scope rings don’t seem to fit on my rail. Is there more than one type of rail? What do I need to get? Old scope was 1”, new scope Is a 30mm, the issue is where they connect to the rail- they look a little different....

there are 3 types of rails. dovetail, weaver and picatinny. weaver and picatinny essentially are the same other than their different measurement specs. dovetail are usually part of the receiver.

I just got some Weaver Rings but the bolt running through for the clamp function is too big to fit in the slot on the rail! Has anyone else run into this issue? I may have to post up some photos tonight

Picatinny work on both Picatinny and Weaver bases, but Weaver only work on Weaver - Because of the bolt width.

Reversed it - It's Weaver work on both Picatinny and Weaver bases, but Picatinny only work on Picatinny - Because of the bolt width.

The cross bolt in the slot of the rail doesn't fit?

Read up here: https://www.targetbarn.com/broad-side/picatinny-rails-vs-weaver-rails/

The Picatinny rail is very similar to the Weaver design, but they do not exactly interchange. The Weaver mounting rails have slots that are .180” wide and do not necessarily have a consistent spacing between the grooves. Picatinny slots are .206” wide with a center-to-center groove width of .394”.

That is an awesome write up! I think I might try taking a file to the scope rails I got on- the cross bolt wont fit the rail. Exactly like RCBS says!

Once again-thank you guys!

You might want to be very, very, careful with that file. Mounts/rings are "precision" for a reason. JMHO. Mac

You scared me straight- I just ordered a new different set of rings. They say Weaver style, but so did the last set. :D

I've done it with a file that I had safed off one side. Pulled a little out of both sides until the cross bolt would drop in.

It's not exactly the best thing in the world, but it'll get you by.

My guess is you bought Weaver brand piccatinny rings for your Weaver base. Buy all piccatinny bases from now on and either will fit.

Me thinks you are correct! Yea a piccatinny rail would fix my problems :D
