Maggie’s Man's Best Friend Thread

Duke and Nukem.

Thanks so much to everyone who has posted on this thread and helped console those who have lost their best friend. I read something on here months ago about how to deal with things when that sad day comes. One of the posters said something that really stuck with me and was basically that you need to do what is best for the animal, not try to make them suffer any longer or artificially extend their lives for your own purposes. That advice and all the great posts on here (I literally read all 19 pages) really helped my wife and I get through the last few very difficult days.

After 16 wonderful years, our beloved Siberian Husky Katya told us it was her time. She was with me on so many exciting hunts, fishing, camping trips, daily runs/walks, and just life in general. Although it is terribly difficult saying goodbye, having a dog truly does enrich your life. I take comfort in knowing animals are destined for Heaven. Humans however have free will and must choose. I miss her so badly that someday getting to Heaven and seeing her again is all I want. Tremendous motivation to live a good life and be the best person I can be.

BTW, take lots of pictures of you furry friend while you can . . . they come in handy after they're gone.

Wyliecoyote nailed it in the last 3 sentences of his post.

Take comfort in knowing that you are not alone. Many of us have been through that day, many of us are well aware we will face that day. You gave Katya a loving home. Recognizing when we have to finally say goodbye is a difficult decision and I personally prayed for guidance. I continue to pray with a special intention that St. Francis help owners and their pets now and forever. Thank you for sharing those great photos and your thoughts. Take care, be well & stay safe.

Thanks! I used to pray to St. Francis as a kid when I lost things (toys and such), something my Grandma taught me. Much better to pray to him for a lost dog and probably what my Grandma actually meant. Be good for me to do some reading on St. Francis!

Awesome little puppy, cool name too! I’m guessing it has no clue how to fetch a ball or stick? My husky was that way too. Something about those breeds that makes playing fetch a mystery. I’ll skip on fetching any day for all their other wonderful traits: rarely bark, great family loyalty, non-greasy coat, love running . . .

Yeah she's great, my first Shiba, past dogs have all been in the terrier family, Wire Hair Fox Terrier and Airedales.. She does fetch but only if she is in the mood for it.. Rarely barks, unless talking smack, which is funny - she makes noise that's not barking, not sure how to describe it. Only thing is that Shiba scream is as bad as they say it is, damn bone chilling.. surprise they don't use it as sound effects for horror movies.

This is my wife’s little hobbit of a Corgi, Mr Frodo. I wasn’t super stoked to get him initially, but, like all dogs do, he eventually found a soft place in my heart and is the coolest little dog

Duke is on the right he's my buddy's dog
In Michigan he's a handful and not
Much hunting yet, Nukem (not his real name) is the neighbors two doors down.
They are pals.
Very intelligent and have a mind of their own.

My wolf dogs, Nikita the mother and Cloud the blackphase daughter. I watched her being born Christmas day, will be 5 years this year. Two years ago Cloud got a weird liver fungus and near died. I gave her 5 antibiotics twice a day for 20 months. Today shes healthy and mean as a snake...a very sweet snake.

This is Colbe. He was sort of a rescue. The lady next door kept him chained in a 6x8 kennel and never walked him. I talked her into letting me take him for walks one day, then after a few months she said I could not do that any more because he howled every time he heard me. Eventually I talked her into giving him to me. He was never house trained before I got him, but he never had an accident in the house and never destroyed my stuff. My wife said when I left for work he would sit by the door until I came home every day. He was the smartest dog I have had and one of the most athletic.

That's terrible after only six years. I've never heard of Addisons disease, scary how fast it took her. In the months leading up to my dog passing, I often thought it would be better and easier for me if it just happened unexpectedly, like if she just tipped over one day. Can't say it's any easier though whether there's a big build up to it, like with putting them down, or if it happens suddenly. Loosing a dog is the hardest damn thing.

I've put two down and it's never easy. First was a 9 year old Border Collie that developed a brain tumor. The second was a lab that made it all the way to 15 years. Sorry for your loss.

Teddy. I rescued him from my ex-wife. She was gonna give him away or something, and probably blame me for not taking him when my daughter got upset about it. To be honest, I didn’t want a dog. But now, I wouldn’t trade the lil feller for anything.
