The illusion is caused by a meteorological phenomenon called a temperature inversion. Normally, the air temperature drops with increasing altitude, making mountaintops colder than the foothills. But in a temperature inversion, warm air sits on top of a band of colder air, playing havoc with our visual perception. The inversion in Cornwall was caused by chilly air lying over the relatively cold sea with warmer air above.

Because cold air is denser than warm air, it has a higher refractive index. In the case of the “hovering ship”, this means light rays coming from the ship are bent downwards as it passes through the colder air, to observers on the shoreline. This makes the ship appear in a higher position than it really is – in this instance, above the sea surface.

This topic/news pops up in the bear lit about twice a year. Lol

That's (was) the aircraft spare parts house. Prolly actually had a cat in a box in there.

My old hangar, Dock 93 is circled in blue at the bottom of the photo.

The round, white thing in the middle of the circle is the AFFF storage tank.

The hangar with part of the blue lines on the top of it is Corrosion Control/ Washrack.

Ever wonder why sow grizzlies with cubs hangout so close to roads in Yellowstone? Male grizzlies have been known raise hell with cubs that are not their offspring. Didn't take long for the sows to figure out the safest place for their cubs is as close to civilization as they can get.

Back when I was doing line safety on big assed campaign fires, I was visiting with a resource specialist about rerouting a proposed dozer line to protect critical sage chicken habitat. The fire was in Colorado. My concern was mitigating increased risks to personnel that changing the line could potentially cause. I made some smart assed comment about sage chickens being far from extinct. The resource specialist asked where I lived, and I told her central Wyoming. She told me 37%-40% of greater sage grouse were in Wyoming, and Wyoming had more leks than any other state. She continued by saying sage grouse numbers are down 90 per cent from the estimated record high population. I had to ask, "What's a lek?" She explained a lek is the sage grouse mating ceremony where the males strut around. Of course I couldn't resist...I replied, "So are you telling me I can't see the big picture because I am used to seeing a lot of fucking sage chickens?" I immediately thought, oh shit if the human resource people get a hold of this... Thankfully she just laughed and said, "You got it."
