When the Iceland volcano erupted last month (and BTW is putting on quite a show today) I posted a History documentary about Yellowstone. Well folks, its been very active in the past week. I'm honestly surprised this hasn't had more public attention. In the past week there has been significant increase in number and severity (up tp 7.3) of earthquakes, increasing amounts of magma, animal herds leaving the park, asphalt roads melting...the big one will be devastating but when will it happen?

Scientist as of April 1 pretty chill:

Hopefully soon, it'll be quick for us. You guys can rebuild what's left of clown world.

I'll be surprised if I notice it's happening. I should be within blast radius and most everyone I know will be dead instantly or buried within minutes and crushed.

But hey, at least I won't have to starve to death without the sun like many.

Unfortunately it won't happen soon enough.

We'll probably be unlucky enough that it will go off after something else has already wiped out humanity so it will be too late to have done any good.

Suffocation due to explosion/toxic gases will kill more than lava flows and ash.

Yep, going to blow up any minute now. Best stay the fuck out of Wyoming.

I'm serious. Stay the fuck out.
    Um, Bro?

I just closed on a place in the North Front Range near @Bender last November.
I have it rented out now, but am moving up there as soon as I can
Bender told me it was the place to be. Lots of pigeons.

    Meh... all still noise level.

I give Vesuvius or one of the big African ones a better chance. Yellowstone will be huge. But odds are in our favor. Plus/minus 50-100k years is pretty safe for the present.

    Slate-wiper though it is.

    Sirhr

    Agreed.
Lived in Naples Italy for several years, literally on the rim of the super volcano (Campi Flegrei).

Shit going on in Wyoming is..."meh" compared to the average day in Campi.

I live just across the Snake River from Washington, 1270 yards from my deck to a sign on a walk/bike path on the Washington side. We MIGHT be okay here. I don't wish to see the loss of life in one of the prettiest parts of the lower 48 but that blast would be something to witness!

I wonder how it would impact the Snake River here.

If it does blow, no one will know. They will just create another school shooting and the media will ignore the volcano.

admittedly not a close follower, but i fear cascadia will happen first.

I see/hear this with Wyoming, Idaho, wherever all the time and it's cool.

I tell people to stop moving to Texas and I'm an asshole, Lol.

Seriously though, stop. We don't want you here. The only people who do aren't from here and want the state blue...

PLEASE choose Texas instead of Idaho. It's a MUCH larger state with MUCH more room for the influx of the leftist idiots.
Idaho has a state income tax, Texas don't.
Texas has a Mayo Clinic, Idaho don't.
It gets real cold in Idaho and our summers are hot as fuck. Texas generally doesn't have cold weather and when it does, it don't last long.
Texas women are the talk of the Union. Not Idaho's.
Texas has professional sports teams, as in multiple. Idaho has none.
There are no Central Markets in Idaho.
Texas is the place you want to be.

Move to Oklahoma it's like Texas but with a low IQ.

The following is ALL just speculation from a guy on the internet, so treat it for the 2 cents or less it's worth. I'm in the camp that it's very, very doubtful this is going to be the "big one" or anything close to it anyway.

About the Snake River specifically... since the headwaters are in Yellowstone NP, it looks to be a near certainty that a whole lot of ash and mud would be coming downriver shortly after an eruption, so if your home is located near the level of the bank, you would want to think about heading uphill. Otherwise, it looks like the ash fall in your area could range from zero to around 4" based on maps that I googled - again, none of this is scientific. The amount of ash seems to depend mostly on the strength of the eruption (obviously) and the wind directions from ground level up to the jet stream at the time it occurs.

I hope not before I get out there to see it. Ive seen a large number of our national parks but not Yellowstone.

As a reference, Mt. St Helens, which I have seen, sent up a CUBIC MILE of rock when it blew.

    Its Trump's fault

When Mt. St. Helens blew, we had about an inch of ash locally. I wasn't here. I was away doing push-ups.

Colorado can take everyone. Anyone and everyone, please move here and drive the price of my house up. That way I can sell, move somewhere else, & pay cash for a badass place on a bunch of land

    Did someone say....earthquake?!

They've exhumed Mastadon bones in northeast Nebraska under FEET of ash from previous Yellowstone eruptions.

If you want to monitor the seismic activity, go here --> http://www.fdsn.org/networks/detail/WY/

Scroll down the the list of seismic stations and then enter that three letter name/code here --> https://www.iris.edu/app/station_monitor/

or search for seismic stations by zip code. You can also sub the letters IW for WY in the first link to see activity from a bit south of Yellowstone in the Teton range. I installed that network back in 2004 - 2008. What a fun gig! I miss Wyoming.

    Yeah, I'm a seismo nerd. 🤓

Is there still a three-day waiting period for an isolated cabin in Idaho? ;-)

    Cheers,

When mount St. Helens blew its wad I had gritty ash an inch deep all over shit and I live 2 states away. I didn't go see it right away and wish I would have. Took the kids to see it 15 years after the fact and it is AWESOME!
Mount St. Helens was the geologic equivalent of a champagne cork popping off.

Vesuvius (actually its neighbor under Naples Bay) would be a really nice 20 lb Tannerite blast. Lots of dead Italians, but probably a net positive for the EU balance of trade. Good TV. They'd do "Hands Across America" or "FarmAid" or something again.

Yellowstone or one of the big African caldera's would be a slate wiper. Not a lot of initial deaths. But probably 3 - 4+ billion over 10 years when you consider America is the world's breadbasket. And everyone on the planet will be reduced to eating bark, shellfish and worms for at least 4 generations... yeah. It would be bad.

And it will happen. But in our near future? Meh, who knows. Humankind has lived in a real 'Goldilocks' zone of planetary evolution. We have a very, very mild planet and climate, etc. right now. We are lucky as all hell.

We will see another ice age soon. A supervolcano or three. A meteor impact. A pole shift. A Cascadia Tsunami. And a local supernova that gamma's us out of existance isn't out of the realm, either.

20K - 100K years is a blip in geologic time. Homo Erectus has been really lucky... right place, right time. Good planetary alignment. Damn lucky.

That luck will run out. It won't be stupid socialist climate Change Hoax. It will be the Universe swatting us like an insect. If we are lucky, we are going to be ready to move off-planet. But that will take a couple of centuries at best. IF we can marshal the resources to do it, instead of spending it on free cheese and socialism.

My bet is that the race is extinct in 5,000 years. To be replaced by an ascendant race of cockroaches, squirrels and probably lawyers. Can't get rid of any of them.

    Sirhr

Can we move the volcano further east... like south mid coast kinda. You know, reasons.

But seriously, if it went boom the death toll from human on human carnage would be endless. The whole world would be a killing field.

I lived in Portland when St Helens blew. Watched it live from the roof of my house. The only time in my life I've worn a mask.
I just remember about a month of really spectacular sunsets here in in VT.

Middle School... lots of cool geology lessons. Been fascinated by volcano's and geology since. And my history Masters was focused on the Annales School of Historians... Geographic Determinism. Marc Bloch et. al. Which puts geography at the heart of how history unfolds. So all this stuff is fascinating!!!

I seem to remember that squirrels are pretty resourceful, and have no problem locating and acquiring fruitcakes. They should be well fed at least.
