I was looking at the Bergara Premiere Ridgeback but got to thinking I could probably build something for close to the same funds.. I need some choices on actions and pre-fit barrels. Budget for this one is $2300 (not including the chassis). Thoughts from all you more experienced hiders?

I recently ordered a Defiance Deviant Tactical action for a planned 308 build. They are available in left hand versions. You can get one of them or a Surgeon and a Krieger barrel installed by a Gunsmith for $2300 and have enough left over for dinner.

But why when you can get actions that take shouldered prefits? Deviant and Surgeon are very 2015 when you could get a Ruckus/Tenacity or Impact/Lone Peak in their place

Well, I said the hell with it and ordered the origin and a 20" proof carbon fiber barrel. The AI chassis I want is out of stock so thats gotta wait. I already have a Timney HIT for it.
I still haven’t been convinced that spending more than the origin actually gains you anything tangible. I don’t think you’ll be disappointed with it, I’m certainly not.

Origin and a proof?

You'll like it. Good call.

Don't buy the Origin! Had one. So sloppy and binds easily. Really disappointed in the one I had. I have since purchased three Impacts. No comparison.

Impact: $1,450
Prefit: $750-850

Too late, this is the first negative comment Ive ever seen for Origin.
There are two main camps, don’t get too caught up in it. I don’t like impacts where they tripped in cutting the lug ramps so there’s a hitch halfway through, doesn’t make em bad though. It’s just what it is.

Those who like crf mechanical ejection and bighorn and everything that goes with them that impact people hate.
And
Those who like push feed plunger ejection and impact and everything that goes with them that bighorn people hate.

The slop and binding was excessive in my Origin. A buddies had the same thing going on. I enjoyed the CRF, but was disappointed in the action. The bolt lift/closure was very smooth however. The impact is a superior 2 lug action all things considered when comparing the two. I don't think anyone disagrees with that, and the impact is within his budget which is why I recommended it.

As for the OPs reply, there are dozens of threads and comments on the slop and binding of the Bighorns. If you like CRF and replaceable bolt heads one could overlook it I'm sure.

Ever think user error and they just need to be run different? I can get an impact to bind just as easily as any other action out there if I run it like a doofus.

I think the hitch/cam in an impact is absolutely trash. And its a reason I dislike the vudoo though that is not quite the same. To be the origin/TL3 feels light-years better than an impact and function they both run.

Thats the beauty of the market today. Its not just Rem700 Surgeon or Defiance with a gunsmith fit barrel anymore

FWIW I got rid of my TL3 for an Origin as I prefer the feel of the swept knob which matches the RimX

I’ve done the build it yourself route a couple times. I wasn’t anywhere close to 2300...in a bad way.

900 action
750 barrel
600-800 stock
200 trigger
150 bottom metal

I guess it depends on how you build it. I suppose that would do it...just need to stop going with the 300 USD mark up for CF barrels.
